So I have to refund???

Hi. I've been on eBay nearly 15 years. Had the usual annoying issues.

I don't think I've had a return yet until now. I sold several glass ornaments worth £80.00.

The box was massive and after selling once and they buyer saying postage was too high (it was classed as over 5kg because of the size and weight of packaging). I refunded this buyer. Received my first negative feedback for this. The item was then in the way at home for weeks so when someone offered £25 which I accepted.

Buyer 2 has opened a case to say some are damaged.

All ornaments were new and in their original packaging. I put these into a large box then put the box into a other larger box with padding.

I put the size of the box and the reason for the high cost (due to 2 boxes and padding).

My issue is how can I prove they were intact.

How do I know that the buyer hasn't accidentally broken some herself? It's a lot of money to refund if she has done this herself.

The buyer joined under this account in 2021. Now just because she's new it doesn't mean she's a fraud I know that.

I've not been in this situation before. I was 3456 next to my name. She has 11. Will that help me? I mean if an item arrived damaged I obviously it won't but I can't see how it can have broken.

Any advice please?

I actually went onto the eBay chat and was told. They believe me. They have my back. Don't overthink. It's my decision and they will go along with it. Which was weird as how can they actually know either way.

Thank you.

Sorry the title should say "do I?'

Have they provided evidence that some are broken. E.g. photos?

RevolvingPivot · 25/10/2021 11:05

They are sending it back to me. I've checked tracking abs I should get it today. Sorry I should have mentioned that.

eBay have said firstly I should wait for it to arrive and check it is broken.

I told them I have no doubt it will be broken otherwise they wouldn't be sending it back to me. My question is whether they have broken it.

Also I can't believe I'm admitted this and ill sound like a psycho. I found the same item on Facebook. I clicked onto the seller and it's the same first and second name and city as my buyer.

The item said now sold. She could have advertised it and sold it before she received it. Or she could have changed it to sold once she realised it arrived broken / she broke it. Or she could have bought similar. It would work out she would have made £7 per item or the price she's advertised.

I know that had nothing to do with it as it was her item to sell and it doesn't prove anything either way.

It’s not much of a scam if they’re returning the items is it? Why would they break them and return them? Unfortunately they probably did arrive damaged.

RevolvingPivot · 25/10/2021 11:13

No I don't think she is scamming me as such.

I'm asking how do I know she hasn't broken it herself.

You don’t/can’t prove it.

This is one drawback of eBay I’m afraid.

CandleWick4 · 25/10/2021 11:18

OP hold on doing anything until you get them back. If you get them all back and some are damaged speak to eBay and see what they say. However if you’ve got the items back you’ll have to refund. You can’t keep the buyers money and the items I would have thought.

stillonthattightrope · 25/10/2021 11:20

You'll have to refund. I don't think eBay/PayPal ever side with the buyer.

RevolvingPivot · 25/10/2021 11:23

Ahh bugger ok. Thanks. This is the first time it's happened in 15 years. It's such a shame that the item will be thrown away and I'll lose that money.

I'd be gutted refunding they money anyway but I would do it. I'm just frustrated that I can't understand how they would break they way I packaged them.

It's much more likely it arrived broken than that the buyer deliberately broke them. I've worked for an online business that sold some fragile items and no matter how well they are packed, sometimes they just break through being dropped or thrown while in transit.

It might be easier to sell them on a local page and say it's for collection only.

Hi sorry I don't think I'm clear I don't think they were deliberately broken.

I'd tried selling on Facebook and eBay and had collection options on both.

I sold something on eBay that sadly got broken in transit. It was low value and Hermes refunded me the item cost ( but not the postage 🤔) so I lost out and wish I had never bothered.

My point is that if the buyer sends you enough photos, you should be able to claim with the company you used to send it

Kuachui · 25/10/2021 11:33

I would have asked for photo of broken stuff before getting it returned as if they return say a piece of paper then they will get a refund. the buyer will win this. as ling as tracking shows returned.

ebay doesnt give a crap about sellers and fraud because at the end of the day if someone has saod they returned it thrn ebay has to listen to them under ebay gaurantee, thats why i would never use anything but gumtree or facebook to sell on

40Whats · 25/10/2021 11:33

Often courier services won’t insure glass items, but you could see if they are covered OP.

RevolvingPivot · 25/10/2021 11:41

Hi I've received them. I honestly can't see any damage. It's weird. That means I can re sell but I'll message her first as I'd like to know which bits so I can throw them.

Refund issued. They look fine to me.

How weird, surely you'll be able to see if they are broken. What are they?

I've just had the exact situation although different item. I sent something that I know was in perfect condition, buyer said it was damaged and sent me a photo of the damage. They asked for a refund so I contacted ebay on their live chat for mediation. eBay refunded them but without charging me.

Hi I did. They said they understand my frustration but this is based on the buyers experience.

The postage I charged was stated on the listing. She said it was too expensive so the only thing I could do was refund. I don't understand how they can allow that what else could I do?

Did you not have the money stopped then?

It's bizarre as I can't see any damage.

I've asked if they can tell me where they are cracked but now she's had her money she's no reason to reply.
