Anyone considering abandoning Ebay?

I used to sell a lot when the children were smaller. Equipment, clothes etc and recently the odd item of clothing and shoes but the new fee system and lack of recent selling success are really putting me off.
Reading this thread indicates more scamming too.
I'm not that taken with what I've read of Vinted or Depop either.
It's annoying that a way to make a little cash has become so fraught

I'm finding ebay increasingly difficult at the moment too.
In the last two weeks I've had someone repeatedly asking me to post their item to an overseas address different to the one on their UK based PayPal.
A cancelled order because they didn't see the size; it was written in the title, description and there was a photograph of the label. 🤔
A guy go silent on arranging to collect a large piece of furniture that he's already paid for via PayPal.
As I buyer I've had an expensive item delivered which was dreadfully packed and ended up damaged. The seller then badgered me for weeks to fill in a pack of paperwork for his Parcel force claim which I did...twice!

It seems to take up more time and energy than it used to but it's my only junk outlet while the charity shops locally are not accepting donations.

PinkSpring · 16/04/2021 13:47

I am not updating to the new payment terms so I have until end of the month then I will only just eBay for buying.

I don't like how they ALWAYS side with the buyer no matter what.

I am using Facebook marketplace and gumtree to sell instead - plus it's free!

Lambside · 16/04/2021 13:49

The charity shops here are accepting donations and I took 4 big bags to one on Wednesday.
So tempted to take the bits I was going to eBay too. Feel I can't be bothered just to make a few quid. It's such a shame.

I've been using vinted and its been a breathe of fresh air how easy it is compared to Ebay! Plus I've sold more on there in a week than months on ebay. Im totally sold

sorryiasked · 16/04/2021 13:53

I've been putting stuff on Facebook but not had much success. I'm sticking with Ebay at the moment but it's getting to be such hard work.

raskolnikova · 16/04/2021 13:58

I sold a lot on eBay last year and was pleased with how it went and the amount of money I made. I was hoping to sell on there again (I like buying from eBay), but I've really been put off by the new fee system. So I don't know now Sad

idontlikealdi · 16/04/2021 14:31

I haven't used it for years it just became a ballache

DeathAndTaxis · 16/04/2021 15:34

I've made a couple of hundred £s recently. I think people always grumble about eBay TBH, but I've generally been lucky so far (although the increased fees are a bit rubbish). I suppose it depends on what you're selling as to whether it's likely that someone locally might want want it or not.

ChocOrange1 · 16/04/2021 15:39

Please can anyone explain the new fee system. I tried to Google but all I can see is that the fees remain the same but all go to ebay, rather than some to PayPal and some to ebay.

AgentCooper · 16/04/2021 15:41

I haven’t sold on EBay in ages, Facebook marketplace and groups are so much simpler.

Lambside · 16/04/2021 17:12

I'm just back from collecting a few plants I happened to see whilst investigating Facebook marketplace Blush
Seems to work well then Grin

I sold something this week for 99p. Fees were 89p. Have been using eBay for years but I think I'm done now!

lljkk · 16/04/2021 17:51

Can't search Vinted to see what other people have sold things their for?

Therefore I can't tell if it would work out better than eBay or not.

I may give it a try but low expectations

Toddlerteaplease · 16/04/2021 17:52

I would rather the money still goes through PayPal and you get it instantly. It takes two working days at the minute. Think I've lost £5 in fees.

MothralovesGojira · 16/04/2021 18:13

We've just sold the last of our stuff on eBay as we're being forced to change over to their new payment system at the end of April. We like our sales money to go into our PayPal account and we then use that to buy other stuff as and when we want to either from eBay or other companies. That choice has now been taken away so we're not going to continue sell via eBay and don't use any other platforms so it's ebay's loss. We looked at the t+c's and didn't like the way it was worded and that it gives eBay carte blanche to dip into your bank account without warning as they are fit.
So, in future anything that we don't need will go to a charity shop and it will be a charity's gain and not the greediness of eBay.

AndddddHerewegoagain · 18/04/2021 10:04

@lljkk on vinted the seller doesn't pay anything. The buyer pays for the item plus protection fees (about 38p) and postage. I sold some baby clothes the other day for £12 and thats how much I got in my bank. Such a simpler system than working out %

Just to add i put some bits on last night around 9pm and have woken up to 4 items sold. Its just such a simple system!

I've already given up with buying and selling
Bought a dress last year from eBay, turns up an utter mess. Got a refund and left negative feedback to warn others. Feedback was removed and I was given a warning on feedback abuse. All I had said was "buyer beware, description not adequate, refunded via case". If I'd have written something incorrect or abusive then fine.
I then sold a set of speakers and a mixer. Both collection only as the weigh a tonne.
Had a buyer ask about courier, I said sorry no. He bid anyway. So I said can you collect then. Apparently he couldn't but he would "expect" me to follow eBay standard and send.
No offer of postage. No please. He won as it was too late to cancel his bid. Paid by paypal- no extra for postage or packaging. I contacted eBay and they were hopeless. Told me to send it. He got his money and my fees refunded. I never got a final value fee back and received a community strike for non-compliance. Because he wouldn't understand I couldn't send!
Guy with speakers goes quiet for weeks, I started a non-payment case. He got abusive about being in the NHS and how dare I demand he respond after 3 weeks. Told me to keep my shit speakers and how he would be making a note of my name in case I was in his hospital! Had to report that to the hospital and they assured me he wasn't in a position to do anything even if he wanted to. What a jerk.

I use vinted now. Had some absolute bargains.

Applefruitcake · 21/04/2021 16:08

@Tiktokersmiracle youre not allowed to mention any cases on the feedback, that's why it was removed

I've never really had much luck with clothing on eBay. It just takes too much effort for very little money or most of the time 0 money as the listings just sit for months until I give up and take them to the charity shop. Good to know about Vinted though, I might try it.

lookdeepintotheparka · 23/04/2021 16:35

I've had it with eBay after a buyer accused me of selling a perfume that wasn't authentic. I had to pay return shipping for her only for me to find she'd used loads in the week it took her to return it Angry

eBay automatically side with buyers like this so I feel there's no place for honest sellers any more.

This is after a string of non payments too which again, eBay do nothing about.

drpet49 · 26/04/2021 19:53

I won’t ever quit eBay. It is so easy, transparent and I get good prices for the items I sell.

lljkk · 26/04/2021 19:56

Ebay is good enough for me. Sold 3 things in last 24 hours. One for me, 2 for charity.

Walkacrossthesand · 04/05/2021 18:40

For the last 3 things I've bid for (I watch, and then place a bid of the maximum I'm prepared to pay) in the last few seconds

Each time (even on an item that had no other bds on it), I've been outbid just as the auction was ending - literally in the last second.

I suspect these are electronic sniper bids, it's very odd and I can't work out what's going on. But it's happened 3 times in a row, and if it happens again I shall stop bidding in auctions and just do 'buy it nows'.

That, coupled with the change in fee structure mentioned above, which makes selling less appealing, means I'll likely be bidding eBay farewell soon.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 04/05/2021 19:02

I haven't sold on eBay for a few years - I now use FB groups to shift vintage books, Gumtree or FB local group for kids' stuff, and I don't have the time any more to sell stuff if it's likely to make less than a fiver.

However I do have some vintage toys and tea sets,.probably 30-40 quid each, and if they don't go via Gumtree I may have to go for eBay unless anyone has a better idea. And plan to try Vinted for selling and buying some Bravissimo clothes.

I buy lots of toys and books on eBay, and widgets via eBay as it's often good value and better than Amazon.

Loushome · 04/05/2021 22:37

Had a buyer bought a BNWOT blouse from me, she wore it but then left negative feedback saying item had ripped 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
The fact that she received it in the condition I described it as, that she then wore it so clearly it was as I described but then left ME negative feedback through something she did - that’s just morally wrong and not acceptable.
Ebay allowed the feedback to stay. By doing this, they enable this behaviour and that’s not OK.

I'n a longtime ebayer who is deterred by the move from PayPal to the new eBay payment system and so I'd be interested to hear about experiences on Facebook Marketplace. We need to start clearing out my parents' house and I have plenty of stuff too – mostly larger items like lamps and pictures and garden furniture that would be difficult to post and easier to sell locally where people can pick up. However, a couple of friends have asked if I'm worried about security having people come to the house, which I have to admit puts me off a bit! Especially as my parents' house is empty at the weekends. Any thoughts?
