Anyone considering abandoning Ebay?

I used to sell a lot when the children were smaller. Equipment, clothes etc and recently the odd item of clothing and shoes but the new fee system and lack of recent selling success are really putting me off.
Reading this thread indicates more scamming too.
I'm not that taken with what I've read of Vinted or Depop either.
It's annoying that a way to make a little cash has become so fraught

Ebay prioritises anyone selling tat (and lying about shipping) from China over UK sellers.

I did try Vinted a couple of years ago but had to jump through so many proof hoops to list a designer item I couldn't be bothered.

I've given up on Ebay after having one buyer refuse to take delivery of a laptop, and request a refund. Ebay sorted it in my favour but it was a ballache. Also another laptop went "missing" in recorded delivery, and I only got back a proportion of what it was worth. My fault for not insuring it, but still. Also, clothes selling for pennies, and it actually costing more in postage and packing and driving to the Post Office, than the value of the item. Just not worth it anymore.

I just give everything to charity now including furniture. We have a local hospice who will pick up large items from you, and also a furniture warehouse for those in need, also pick up free of charge. Life's too short for a few quid and hassle.

What also works around here, in a rural village, is putting stuff out front with a "free" sign. Everything we have put out magically disappears, it's great Grin.

I don't really understand the complaints about the new payment system.

The ONLY thing it works out worse with, is when you take payment in cash on collection. Previously no fees for the payment, but now you have to pay 2.8% the same as if you were paid electronically.

BUT - if you use ebay offers, then you're BETTER off

So sell something at £100 NOT cash
Originally - Ebay took £10 and PP £3.20
Now ebay take £13.10 - you're 10p better off!

Sell something at £100 CASH
Ebay used to take £10 - now they take £13.10 - you're £3.10 worse off

Sell something at £100 with £1 FVF offer.
You used to pay £1 to ebay and £3.20 to PP
Now you pay £1 to ebay - you're £3.20 BETTER off.

@Walkacrossthesand

For the last 3 things I've bid for (I watch, and then place a bid of the maximum I'm prepared to pay) in the last few seconds

Each time (even on an item that had no other bds on it), I've been outbid just as the auction was ending - literally in the last second.

I suspect these are electronic sniper bids, it's very odd and I can't work out what's going on. But it's happened 3 times in a row, and if it happens again I shall stop bidding in auctions and just do 'buy it nows'.

That, coupled with the change in fee structure mentioned above, which makes selling less appealing, means I'll likely be bidding eBay farewell soon.

Surely this is just the result of other people using the same tactic that you are, but with a higher maximum?

Nothing wrong with the tactic- I do it too- but I don’t see why you think it’s odd if you get outbid?

Oooh might try vinted!
Why on earth would ebay decide to put people off like this?

ChangeTheWayYouLookAtThings · 08/05/2021 19:53

Is vinted only for clothes?

Gingefringe · 09/05/2021 09:52

Ebay used to be a bit of fun. Now it's just hassle - the new Seller Hub is confusing with too much information and difficult to navigate, and the new fee structure feels like some control has been taken away.

With Paypal you had a message to say that funds had been received and you could use it straight away - now you have to wait a few days for the money to go directly into your bank account.

I'm not sure I'll bother any more with eBay. I hope they read these threads.

TeamMummy · 09/05/2021 10:10

I only buy on eBay. The fees are expensive for selling so I use free sites plus you get lots of ppl trying it on

Walkacrossthesand · 11/05/2021 12:46

@Llyn - possibly, and I've been outbid by someone coming in just after me with a higher bid, philosophical shrug time. 🤷‍♀️

But the bids I'm talking about, appear literally in the last second as I'm watching the countdown and the page is about to close - I'm expecting 'congrats you won', and I get 'outbid'.

Once could be excellent & fortuitous timing, but 3 times in a row? Computers have faster reaction times than humans, is all I'm saying...

There is not a cat in hells chance I will be giving them by bank details. Hardly have much money in it but I do not want ebay to have my details.

I will be unable to sell but the rare things I sell can be sold on marketplace and I will have to filter the morons.

What will happen to my account at the end of this month? Will Ebay close it? I tried to read all the information but it is pure gibberish.

There seems to be a 0.32 fee as well as the other charges,
