I suspect the seller is bidding against me to raise the price

There was absolutely no interest in this item, and I asked a question where I foolishly said how desperate I was to win it.
Almost immediately another bid was put in from a brand new ebayer (no feedback etc) and they have bid higher than me every time I renew my bid.
Maybe I'm just sour as I really want it and it is now too expensive.
But do ebay hav ways of preventing this from happening?

Can ebay fakes generally not read their own names?

Haven't read whole thread but to avoid this, don't 'nibble' your bid (don't bid in small increments reacting to other bids) but instead snipe (bid the maximum you would be willing to pay, at the last possible moment, either manually or with a sniping service)
