I brought a jacket off eBay postage stated was £5.50 for 2nd class delivery it arrived with the postage on parcel for £2.80 2nd class this is nearly double in postage i wasn't happy I haven't message seller yet about ripping me off wwud thanks

I don't think you have been ripped off. They stated their postage price what they paid for it does not matter

Its postage AND packing, ebay takes a % of postal fees and ebay lets you charge for their time going to the post office

Was it new packaging? P&p is for postage mainly and it's against eBay rules to make money out of it (you never used to pay fees on postage )

I could easily spend a couple of quid on wrapping stuff. It is not just a postage fee.

Contact seller and ask. Sometimes when you list an item it offers a suggest p and p price based on other sellers are using. But a jacket can be really heavy or really light. Even with the 10%ebay take for fee and packing it's worth asking why so high before leaving feedback.

Yes it's for wrapping, envelope, postage and time taken to get to post office. £2.80 is not much - you have not been 'ripped off'. If sellers didn't charge the right amount for postage there wouldn't be any pint selling stuff on eBay - particularly when you buy something for a couple of quid.

P & p stands for postage and packaging, not for 'mostly postage'!

As it's been well packaged then fair enough. If it had been wrapped in a Tesco carrier bag (I shit you not I've had that) then you'd be right to feel ripped off.

If the seller stated clearly what the postage was then you should just pay up. If I think the postage is expensive I just don't bid on the item. Too late to complain now. I agree that it's postage costs. Post, wrapping paper, petrol money to the post office even. Don't bid if you think the postage is too high.

It's against eBay rules
I would ask for a refund and leave negative if they are not willing, that's what I have done in the past

Yes thanks iamwhore will do that it seems to happening a lot hiking up the post cost mostly on low value items

I charge a bit more for postage but as an Channel Islands it a takes longer to get to mainland UK and b I have to pay vat import otherwise buyers won't receive the item and will have to pay vat plus customs release charge.
I usually use the recommended p&p by eBay but add a bit extra.

Don't people take p&p into account before bidding? Big companies charge a blanket e.g. £3.95 for delivery. Do people make a fuss if this is too much? Or just challenge individuals who are trying to make ends meet?

Sellers shouldn't add on extra for their 'time', they've chosen to sell the item. How long it takes them to go and post it isn't the buyer's fault, if it's that much trouble to get to a post office they should make it collection only, or freecycle it or bin it instead. Same goes for petrol costs.
It should be the cost of the packaging and postage, not other random charges bunged on.

Surely you paid the same overall price you would have done if p&p was lower? When I bid I have a top price I want to pay inc p&p, it doesn't matter if its £20 plus £5 p&p or £25 free p&p. It seems foolish to only take into account the bidding amount then consider the p&p cost later on.

Well I decided not to contact the seller about the postage malarkey or leave any bad feedback I got a bargain and couldnt afford to buy it full price its always going to be that way that a few sellers overcharge on postage

I sell on ebay, and if selling a low cost item, by the time you have bought packaging materials, paid ebay fees, and paypal fees, and the fee ebay charges for postage it isn't worth it. You do realize that if you only charge what the postage costs you actually make a loss?

Did they send it in a carrier bag with no paper round it?

True Virginia I re-read the whole post again very interesting points from everyone commenting forgot about the fees etc sometimes its the other way round the seller has to put extra money on postage because they under estimate postage cost
