TTC through Donor IUI or Donor IVF - weight loss spin-off thread

A few of us on the donor IUI/IVF thread have got some weight to lose, and rather than bore everyone else we thought we'd set up a spin-off thread. So, if you're doing or contemplating donor IUI/IVF and also have some weight to lose, join us here, newbies welcome.

I guess we do introductions/goals? I'll start, but obviously share whatever you prefer in your intro.

I'm witch, froze some embryos last year with donor sperm which are waiting for me to save up enough to fund a career change post baby. I'm fortunate in that I don't have loads and loads of weight to lose, but enough that I could so with some supportive friends to do it with.

I don't really like the idea of dieting per se, I think my aim is more around establishing a healthier relationship with food. I read Fat is a Feminist Issue years ago and I probably need to re-read it again now - it's about women's relationship with food. I'd recommend it, or a much condensed book by the same author, Susie Orbach, called On Eating.

My weight has fluctuated over the years, but the band it's fluctuating within is only trending in one direction. This is almost the heaviest I've ever been, I'm too fat for my fat clothes, and my thighs are getting in the way of each other. In BMI terms I'm a little way into the overweight category, but I carry it all on my stomach so I'm quite a way over the recommended maximum waist measurement. I have been offered a seat on the tube and on one occasion asked if it was my first baby Grin

The numbers aren't the be all and end all - for me that point is that I am at this weight because I don't prioritise sleep and activity and compensate with carbs and caffeine! And for some other more psychological reasons which I'll get to, but this is already the longest intro in history.

I'm going to take Saturday as my starting point:
5'9"/1.75m
12st10.5lb/81kg
BMI 26.4
Waist 36"/91cm
Targets, let's see, but I'm guessing somewhere south of 11st/70kg - I'll head in that direction and see how I feel. I'll never be right at the bottom end of the BMI range, I'm broad!

Eating wise - I'm cutting back on high glycemic index carbs and trying to get some more protein in. I know I feel better and less hungry when I'm not struggling from one sugar rush then crash to the next.

Very naughtily weighed myself this morning - definite weightloss- just hope I can keep up this coming week - 3 more days at a hotel... so hard to eat right when food has already been arranged

pickle162 · 10/06/2017 09:10

Glad for weight loss kwick, well done😁, think once you get on the losing weight think your metabolism kicks in a bit so the odd non perfect day still goes in right direction.
I also weighed myself ( Chinese and wine last night and who knows what crap tonight and mojitos) BUT I was 71.4kg this morning so lost 1.6kg since weighed on Monday- just need to get back on it tomorrow so can use these 3 weeks before treatment for good and hopefully be able to continue it throughout treatment as my ibs hasn't been as bad since eating better again and I think all the flaring & extra gas didnt make a great environment for my little egg and sperm to have fun.

Are you at Heathrow at the mo for rest of work bit? Or is that next week?

Bear1980 · 10/06/2017 09:57

Brilliant results kwick and pickle think when you get a bit of a loss it motivates you to keep going

pickle162 · 10/06/2017 11:39

It sure does. I'm really pleased to be meeting up with my friend today but hate it when you actually get on track with diet and then you book all these lovely but very detriment to diet foodie things

kwick · 10/06/2017 22:21

Had quite a lot of syns today what with celebratory souffle and birthday cake in honour of my nephew... but did good for brekkie and lunch - also loads of fresh air and exercise on the allotment Grin

Heathrow is from tomorrow pm until weds pm pickle and then I can hopefully get back to a good routine again.

You will have burnt lots of Cals doing the garden :)

I had pizza express last night then chocolate and wine-but turns out the wine was 5.5% and only about 125cals per small glass (had 2/3rds of bottle) which I didn't think was too bad.....tummy hasn't been too happy this morning.
Having breakfast at my friends then heading home so need to try and be good or at least limit being too bad and then be very good from next week....until I go out for dinner Friday Saturday and BBQ Sunday 🤦🏻‍♀️doh!
Oh yeh even if I can do 5 out of 7 days well that will be better than none

juneybean · 15/06/2017 19:41

Ohh I didn't realise we had a spin off thread! I'm doing calorie counting this week... really got my fingers crossed for a loss tomorrow but I always manage to undo it all over the weekend argh!

Had about 1400 calories today.

pickle162 · 15/06/2017 20:49

I'm out Friday night to a gorgeous Italian restaurant then pizza express sat night then BBQ food Sunday 😩 been very good for last two weeks but just during week and weekends have been bad so think I'm just counteracting each other! But better than eating crap all the time I suppose

kwick · 16/06/2017 08:01

I am feeling virtuous and, dare I say it, lighter Halo I am really hoping for a big loss on Monday at my weigh in. I still have a very long road to travel but during the week if I am in the office I find it fairly straight forward to stick to plan. I do have a few treats aling the way (yesterday I had a Fab) but on SW you can do that.
I think it also really helps that I do not drink. I used to find it hard to get through the day without a tipple at the end of it but now I barely think about it although I have frequent day dreams about iced fingers

pickle162 · 16/06/2017 08:37

Yay well done kwick you are doing so well!! Should be very proud :)

juneybean · 16/06/2017 09:12

I lost 1lb this week! :)

pickle162 · 16/06/2017 11:26

Well done juneybean Smile

kwick · 17/06/2017 05:34

Great progress juney!!

I had a delicious ginger cake yesterday - only 4.5 syns!!!!
I think that is how SW works - no real sense of deprivation.

Everhopeful76 · 18/06/2017 21:10

Hi ladies
So have officially signed up for slimming world, but plan to avoid all fat free yogurts, fromage frais and the like and use my syns to have good fats every other day (nuts and avocados) and intersperse with a chocolate treat on the other. I feel this may work best, and I have followed it loosely over last few days and what with that and being off stimms medication, I think this has naturally helped me lose a couple of pounds but start in earnest tomorrow.
Have had 2 subway salads this week, these have kept me full for over 4 hours so can only be a good thing. Am amazed that it seems easy, as long as am kept off dairy milk's which have been eating thinking how are they only 4 syns - they are 9 I discover today!!
Have decided to set a target of 3 stone but its basically whatever I can lose by mid Sept when I think I will be going after IVF attempt 3 although most likely with DE's or donor embryo. I believe this will put me into a BMI of around 28/28.5 which I think is more doable (certainly in first instance) and then if I get pregnant, then hopefully my weight gain can not be more than I weigh now and I would continue on SW to minimise it. I remember being told last year that I could only put on a stone and half.

So feel a bit more geared up to this plan now... So hopefully it will work for me.

Sounds like everyone else is doing well x

kwick · 19/06/2017 08:33

Well done Ever !! Have you joined an SW group? As I mentioned before I find the group chats very helpful as well as added "pressure" of weigh in day. I go with a friend and that helps too.

I still need to figure out how to include the all important avocado back into eating plan - it contains too many syns right now for me to have. I also need to eat more pulses - which are generally "free".

My goal is to start treatment up again at the end of the summer.

kwick · 20/06/2017 08:18

I had my weigh-in yesterday - 4 pounds off and down to a BMI of 37.4!!! Just need to keep up the good work Halo
I put on a skirt today that I have not worn in a while - no struggling with the zip!!!

Everhopeful76 · 20/06/2017 14:55

Awesome kwik!! So you ve lost 12 lbs now??

To tell you the truth I ve decided not to do the groups because I'm just not good in them and just feel that at any of these groups you have such a vast array of shapes and sizes, including people who have really got very little to lose (a few lbs for eg) and then this really demotivates me, knowing I ve got multiple stones and others have got 10s of stones etc. Should almost be a 3 tier system offering support to each group.
Mum is doing the plan with me so this is a help.

This whole healthy choice "a" and "b" is a phaff - do I want milk or cheese today??. I ve just polished off a pot noodle equivalent Singapore style rice noodles (gluten and dairy free). Its a brand Ilumi and O syns!!!

I feel I will have a stock of these (they do them in sweet chilli and some other flavour) and I feel this might stop me running at chocolate if am feeling emotionally hungry. Well the healthy choice will be a handful of nuts but that will put me at the top of my allowance.

Keep going girls!!

juneybean · 20/06/2017 16:15

Well done kwick!!

Bear1980 · 20/06/2017 17:13

Thats amazing kwick not too much firther to go. I have been bad this last week (tww not a good time for me eating wise) but got down to bmi of c. 37.5 so jist need to get going again. Tomorrow is a new day 😀

kwick · 21/06/2017 08:13

Thanks ladies 😘

@Everhopeful76 I always stick to the same healthy extras - milk (for my tea) and bread (so I can have toast) - then any non-free cheese I syn (but am actually avoiding cheese and nuts).

juneybean · 24/06/2017 09:48

Ugh stayed the same this week. Annoying as I felt like I'd been really good this week!

kwick · 24/06/2017 15:17

That is so annoying juney!

I just had a Yo Sushi pig out... God knows how many syns that is...

Everhopeful76 · 26/06/2017 09:10

Morning guys
So weigh in this morning- 3 lbs loss!! Not too bad, was away for a few days and couldn't b sure I was completely following it in terms of milk intake and perhaps dressings or coatings on things would have needed to have counted more. In the period I was away lost a pound so couldn't have been too far out.
So this week going to b stricter to hopefully lose the same or a bit more again
Step in right direction but feels a long way to go.
Wish everyone a happy week!!

juneybean · 26/06/2017 09:26

Amazing loss ever!! !

Everhopeful76 · 26/06/2017 10:19

Thanks juney how u getting on? I was loosely following slimming world plan the week before as well so I guess overall it's been around 5 lbs from a week being conscious of what eating and the other following it but not in the best circumstances of being able to do anything than an estimate on occasion.?you never know how things are cooked or thickeners added etc
