Is anyone else thoroughly depressed with amount of men who seem to be having a midlife crisis and are prepared to leave their partners and families and just walk away?

Do many of them coming crawling back?

In my experience it seems to be the other way around. Women hit 40-50, and they are the ones that jump based on friends experience (and mine). My wife did, made me the scapegoat of all the ills, made no attempt work on things and just jumped. In fact it's probably 3 men and 6 women that have been the ones to leave based on friends.

✊ Is that you, ex-husband?

Did you only want to start working on things once I had said the relationship was over?
Did you behave in a way that made working on it more difficult or impossible?
Did you let me know during the marriage that you saw me as an under-performer?
Did you get really selfish in bed?
Did you value what I did at zero, and generally worthless while still wanting access to it?
Did you expect me to do the lions share of bringing up your kids, wanting to get the glory of their successes, whilst simultaneously berating me for not earning during the time I was SAHM, and berating me for abandoning the kids when I did start earning again?

And like in AA, if you answer yes to one of these questions there is a problem.
PS. I never made you the scapegoat, taking responsibility for your own actions is not scapegoating.
PPS I didn’t “just jump”
