Starting the Newcastle Diet...

MrsWooster · 19/05/2017 11:45

Started yesterday after breakfast at 105.2kg. I've got a hba1c test today to track it.
So far so Good! Im using exante products as meal replacement and the almond vanilla shake was ok- quite marzipan y. The veg stir fry mixed with the laksa soup mix would have been OK if I'd added a LOT more garlic, chili and ginger. This morning's cherry berry shake was properly nasty- like thick old skool cough mixture. Live and learn.
Any hot tips, companions, advice are welcome.
Wish me luck.

A couple of days of toeing the line...

Well done to your husband Eve! He must be really pleased. I must admit, my taste buds have totally changed. I used to be able to chow down 2-3 packs of crisps in one sitting, I have never really liked chocolate or sweets. I opened a packet the other week and couldn't even finish them, they just tasted like greasy cardboard..

MedSchoolRat · 15/07/2017 09:33

Hi MrsW, what you've done is very impressive, off your own back.
To test HbA1c are you really taking blood sample daily? Does that motivate you?

I never heard of Newc Diet before, but I evaluate medical Evidence for a living.

The weight loss is the one & only key thing according to the originators, you're right, at least in the press releases & summaries & so on that I've seen. This is not about magic fats or evil carbs, it's about fast safe weight loss & bodily (internal, too) fat reduction. Taylor's hypothesis is that some people's bodies just can't handle carrying so much fat without triggering T2DM, but it's possible to reverse, especially in first 5-6 yrs after diagnosis.

I read lots of other interpretations/debate why NewcDiet might work, but I'm only interested in what the originators said. The thing is, your 10 kg loss is great but you need to keep going for NewcDiet to work its possible magic. 93kg isn't safe yet. The original studies, the best responders lost 17kg+.

Sorry, you probably said this but long thread, how long have you had T2DM?

MrsWooster · 15/07/2017 18:45

Hi med the hba1c is from the doc, the day I started the diet and the next one will be too. I have just ordered a new monitor, which I hope will be a waste of money if the hba is within well safe limits...
I have had t2 for about three years, after getting gestational diabetes with d's, now aged 4. Initial results after she was born were ok but it crept back. Not surprised as I am a classic apple and t2 runs in the family. I really hope the hba result is good, and that's why I started it, but I know I've got to get the rest of the weight off too. I've been overweight for ever and it would be a crying shame to get this far and not continue. Its not that arduous, tbh, and if I can carry on for a few more weeks, without buggering about, i can reach my target of 85kg, so just overweight according to bmi. The dc are young, i am not, and cantering about after them will be / is a LOT easier with a bit less tonnage.

Wow, you must be seriously tall (if female).

Shakey breakfast, tomato pasta sauce with veg instead of spaghetti- good result as I can easily eat with the kidsand not try and steal their food and the rest of the soup from yesterday. Dante soups are Not Good but by making a basic spicy veg soup and adding the Tom Yum exante soup mix, it results in a oddly delicious thai-ish concoction. Both these are meals to keep on having in real life, along w the veg stir fry, with a bit of added meat.

If and when I get a doc appointment, I need to ask about the metformin. Doc said stay on it as it may help the weight loss during the process but I just had a big dizzy spell about an hour after taking it (1500mg slow release) and I suspect it may be time to reduce it at least.

OP posts:
MrsWooster · 16/07/2017 10:00

Exante, not dante, though the taste is infernal...

I guess it's not been a divine comedy either! Hey but well done it has been a significant weight loss for you to date. MrEve didn't weigh himself but pretty sure it wasn't anywhere near +17kg lost in 8 weeks!

MrsWooster · 17/07/2017 10:55

I think the dizziness was due to a fuckup with my anxiety meds, as metformin seems to work in a different way. Toeing the line is definitely paying off, weight wise. The Newcastle material talks about 15kg loss as a key figure and it doesn't particularly matter whether it's fast or slow so I am heading towards my target and worrying less about the >8 weeks. If i reach 85kg it will be 20kg, and i was heavier than that before I started, so nearly 20% of bodyweight. Onward and downward.

Still feeling a bit shit so toeing the line is relatively straightforward. It is the most ridiculously surprising thing: actually putting in fewer calories than you use makes you lose weight. I think I have always believed it was some sort of theory. Hurrah for physics. (And Prof. Taylor)

poo overdue!! Still feeling a bit shit (ironically) so still coasting happily along on very little.
Nearly had a nasty turn last night, as the new blood monitor arrived. Took a test, just for a laugh, as you do, and it was 10.9! Crap. Took another this morning, first thing, 9.6. Double crap. Then I realised that the new monitor is in Migs, not mimols (or vice versa) and that 106 = 6.0 and this morning's 96 = about 5.3. Whatever happens to my blood sugars, at least my blood pressure is now down from quadruple figures.

boring plateau. I wonder why it seems to go in jerks like this?

I feel a bit better so am ready to carry on without worrying too much about blood sugar etc. It's the last day of term for me tomorrow and, praise be, the dc don't break up til Tuesday. Blah blah poor them etc but MWAHAHAHAHAH.

wtaf? That is simply rude. I haven't eaten anything off piste not counting a chocolate chip cookie which doesn't count since it was homemade by a friend and it would have been rude to refuse in days AND I've been to the toilet and everything. I've been drinking plenty, eating veg etc so it can only be impact exercise, or lack of same. Too much sitting on my increasingly bony arse and not enough marching about. I assume there will be a sudden drop in a day or so as per, but still wonder about this jerky pattern.

This feels rubbish. I feel miserable anyway, tho god knows why since I've broken up for summer and should be cavorting. I've got the misery munchies ad ds just came in asking for kfc for dinner. Can't see this ending well...

Stupid behaviour: hoovered up the kid's left over kfc, ate the oaty biscuits we cooked in the afternoon.. doesn't explain why I have been plateauing/ gaining but it will certainly ensure it continues. The self-destruct force is strong in this one.

Shakey breakfast, shakey lunch w a carrot, McDonalds chicken and bacon salad tea, so all good.... plus stolen chips from the dc, purloined lumps of muffin, illicit half-milk-half-water cocoa, small slice of LDC and a couple of squares of green and blacks. Why, oh why oh why? I KNOW that if I stick to the basic diet, even with a better version than the crap lunch, I will keep steadily losing and improving the bloods and yet I fuck it up with rubbish little extras. Without sounding like Kate Moss, they simply don't equal the satisfaction of knowing I am actually succeeding and taking control of my health.
The blood sugar monitor is earning its corn though; I am using the diaconnect app and it's all in the green and predicts an hba1c of 5.9 /41 in new money. I've been looking at the recommendations and it seems that under 5.6 is safely in the non-diabetic range so I am well on the way and HAVE to keep going.

And I did just over my 10000 steps. So much for the impact-exercise-helps-me-poo thesis. More liver salts and DEFINITELY healthier choices rather than just the calories; I've been slacking on the veg stir fry and soups. Having said which, yesterday had shakey breakfast, carrotcoriander soup and coleslaw, and mushy peas with my fish tea so not too fibreless.

OP posts:
Evewasinnocent · 26/07/2017 19:46

Hey keep going - nearly there! I think 41 is heading in the right direction (MrEve was 49 - but now is 34 - so definitely non-diabetic) - although talk of 10,000 steps has made me lie down. Enjoy the healthier choices and hope you are feeling good.

Went for the proper hba1c this morning so we shall see. Weight gain is not part of my grand plan but it is fairly minimal so an overdue poo... veg stir fry last night so that should help. Pizza Express lunch less so, despite the 'leggera' choice.

Shitfuckbuggerdamnwank. This is RIDICULOUS. What am I doing?? Yesterday had pasta bake with the dc and then dessertspoonfuls of peanut butter after stir fry tea. If it all added up to 1100 cals I'd be surprised but it is obviously enough to derail things. I KNOW that it works and that it's easy when it is working yet I keep fucking it up. Slept in this morning so no shakey breakfast til 11 so can legitimately skip lunch and look at a veg soup for tea so maybe it will be ok. So stupid to have been looking at almost getting out of the 90s and now be trying to grind back down to 92...
