Why do some men drive practically lying horizontal and so far back?

I've just driven a friends car - he's only about an inch taller than me but I have much longer legs. The car seat was so reclined I could hardly see out and even with my longer legs I had to really stretch to fully depress the pedals.

I've known several men that drive in this peculiar driving position - but none of my girlfriends do.

What's it all about eh?

My BIL does this it is quite funny if you are in the passenger seat and he is way behind you.

On the other hand what about the amount of silly females who drive with the chins grazing the steering wheel. Ok if you are very short you might have to have the seat way forward, but if you are my height why the feck are your jammed up against the sterring wheel?

Shaniece · 06/01/2008 13:55

My DH drives the way you mentioned.

Yes and some women do drive way too close to the wheel. .

Hecate · 06/01/2008 13:57

Cos that's how james bond drives?

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/01/2008 13:59

My mother drives with her nose pressed against the windscreen.

this is so true that it was a well known saying in my family - if my brother or dad had been in the car, the next time my mum sat in the same seat she would go "ooh, I'm in the BACK of the car and I'm LYING down!!!" very crossly. So everytime we ever got in a car with my mum there'd be a chorus of "OOOH I'm in the BACK of the car..." etc etc.

Well, it kept us happy

Agree with Duchess that the equivalent woman's drivign position is with nose pressed to windscreen.

Elphaba · 06/01/2008 14:11

I sit quite far back too and reclined.

Women sat right up to the wheel look ridiculous - and it's dangerous. THey practically have their elbows resting on teh wheel - not right.

Iota · 06/01/2008 14:11

I like my seat reclined slightly and I'm not a bloke. It is far more comfortable.

themoon66 · 06/01/2008 14:18

Opposite way round in this household. DH drives with his knees very close to the steering column. I like to sit well back, but I have much longer legs than him.

Sushipaws · 06/01/2008 14:19

It's because they have much longer arms.

well dp has to have seat as far back as it goes and seat reclined as otherwise his head would poke out the sunroof! He's 6'2" with long legs.

I used to just move the seat forward and not change the recline when I was driving but now I need to be more upright, Habit I got into after being pg as reclining was not good for Optimal Foetal Positioning.

I suspect that most women with their noses up to the windscreen have shorter legs...?

Certainly you should drive with your legs extended out as far is comfortable, otherwise you'll get sore knees when on long journeys.

Which makes me wonder how many women drive very far...

Scramble · 06/01/2008 14:27

My exH is 6'4" and all legs never had too much of a problem and doesn't have to have seat back reclined way too far, but seat is back as far as it goes. BIl is a little shorter and shorted legs but he goes for the lying in the back sat psotion.

I like mined reclined a little saves rubbing mu boobs ont he steering wheeel .

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/01/2008 15:37

They'd never manage in an ancient Landrover where the driving position is bolt upright or er, bolt upright!

exH drove landrovers as a teenager thats what it must have been .

discoverlife · 06/01/2008 15:58

LOL, DS1 is 6'1" and weighs 18stone. EVERY time he gets in the car after me he gets stuck half way in such a position that he can't reach the seat adjuster but to get back out he nearly has to fall out.

discoverlife · 06/01/2008 16:01

I also think its got a lot to with how fat your posterior is. I sit much further forward in the seat, because of a fat bum than my DH who is 4" taller than me. Therefore I actually have my seat further back than he does with his longer legs.

Scramble · 06/01/2008 16:14

Ah thats the answer BIg arsed ladies sit with nose on window.

Small bummed guys can sit further back.

The key to the universe!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/01/2008 16:18

..."he gets stuck half way in such a position that he can't reach the seat adjuster but to get back out he nearly has to fall out".

Sorry but... arf arf arf!

I have to put the seat back after I have driven my dads car - otherwise he cant actually get in the car. At 6.7" (he is 17 stone but proportional) the car is made for small people - like me - I am a foot shorter - and he has to have the seat almost horizontal and the seat as far back as it will go.

Some cars he cant ever get into as they are toooo small, he can drive a mini though and it is hyserical trying to watch him get back out.

The old VW beetles were great for him as they are bubble shaped - some cars it is the roof line that is too low and he cant see out of the windscreen.

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 16:26

My ex bf and I are the same height so he didn't have to make a performance of moving the seat if we drove each other's cars. Didn't stop him from trying though just to prove that he was a mm taller than me though.

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 16:31

Personally I like my seat fairly upright since I actually sit with a straight-ish back most of the time. I had physio a couple of years ago and she gave me some good pointers for sitting ergomonically (sp) in a car to avoid back or neck strain. If you aren't comfortable when you're driving how can you concentrate?

SheikYerbouti · 06/01/2008 16:39

My mate Nige laughs at me when I drive, bause I have to have the seat as far forward as poss and bolt upright

I quite often parp the horn with my left nork as I get out of the car

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 16:47

at having norks big enough to parp the horn with .

discoverlife · 06/01/2008 17:38

Yep, really big norks, means waving at a friend can cause a beat the likes of the Edinburgh Tattoo.

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 17:43

Is this a horn on the wheel or a stalky thing on the side?

discoverlife · 06/01/2008 20:38

In Britain on the steering wheel, but I have know it to do the same in a hire car when it was on the stalk.
