Recommend me some German language music to listen to so that I can improve my german.
My tastes are not very high brow but some of the stuff I listen to is:
Namika
Cro
Sport Freunde Stiller
I will admit I know far more sido than you would think to look at me.

Add to my list please.

I read German at University and spent a Semester at University in Germany (Heidelberg), but it's a while ago now (the 80s) and the music I can remember and liked at the time isn't current in the way that the people you mentioned are.

I did want to add to your list though, so am chipping in with 4 tracks I remember from my heyday.

99 Luftballons by Nena

Ein bißchen Frieden by Nicole

Rock Me Amadeus by Falco

Kristallnaach by BAP

(BAP are/were a band from Cologne and the local dialect is reflected in the spelling of the titles of their songs/albums).

@HorseyHorsham The Goethe Institut puts together Spotify playlists to include lots of current music and they're usually a really good starting point to discover new music.

open.spotify.com/user/goethe-institut

Search Goethe Institut in Spotify and see what comes up.

On the basis of the music you named you might also like these bands:

AnneMayKantereit
Von Wegen Lisbeth
Feline Sahne Fischfilet

Viel Spaß beim Hören!

Totehosen - jazz rap in German

FarEast · 01/10/2023 07:02

Ach - Totenhosen

ineedanewnametoday · 01/10/2023 07:18

Not recent stuff but I loved Freundeskreis when I first came to Germany in the late 90's.

You could check out the following who are all popular at the moment:
Marc Forster
Vanessa Mai
Wincent Weiss
LEA

(Not an actual recommendation on the music though!)

Tillytilly5 · 01/10/2023 07:21

I always liked Silbermond and Wir sind Helden (2010s recommendations!) Or Die Fantastischen Vier are classic old school German hip hop.

ShoesoftheWorld · 01/10/2023 07:29

KIZ - Hurra, die Welt geht unter

The Wise Guys/Alte Bekannte are fun and very clear to understand - try Deutsche Bahn, Radio, Jetzt ist Sommer

90s indie - Tocotronic, Die Sterne

Songs with historical context - Gundermann, Silly, Bettina Wegner

Fettes Brot and their spin-off Deine Freunde - the latter is actually a rap band for children but great music and thoughtful lyrics.

One of my favourite bands is Wir sind Helden. Try Denkmal, Die Reklamation, Aurelie, Nur ein Wort

ShoesoftheWorld · 01/10/2023 07:31

My teens like Kraftklub and Ferris MC (some strong language involved, I believe)

ShoesoftheWorld · 01/10/2023 07:36

And for 70s revolutionary anarcho-pop you can't beat Ton Steine Scherben. Mensch Meier, Keine Macht fuer Niemand and Mein Name ist Mensch are well-known ones. Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest is gorgeous. Rio Reiser later made more commercial stuff - Junimond for example.

doradoo · 01/10/2023 07:38

Love a bit of Herbert Grönemeyer too!

ineedteanownotlater · 01/10/2023 07:40

This was a massive hit last year when we were there

CluelessBananas · 01/10/2023 07:47

Some different stuff for you 🤗

https://spotify.link/I18jy3AgxDb a bit hipster

https://spotify.link/P0CdGv8fxDb dance banger that was huge at carnival

https://spotify.link/D0rgvPqgxDb another carnival tune

https://spotify.link/7rGdRUbgxDb Angela Merkels favourite song

https://spotify.link/BMRWGaegxDb gets stuck in your head everytime someone says guten tag - bit punky

https://spotify.link/yUiGx8sgxDb punky and a bit Bloc party

https://spotify.link/nWVg0khgxDb country vibes

https://spotify.link/aLRXD5xgxDb powerballad

CluelessBananas · 01/10/2023 07:52

Oh and a huge shout out to the band Schimmerling - pop/rock/emo as the lead singer was also working for the removal company that moved us last time. Super nice guy!

Lovestodrinkmilk · 01/10/2023 07:55

I like Berge - pop-folk, really easy tunes and clear lyrics.

It was also banned from many festivals and radio stations for its sexist lyrics (it's about a brothel and the 'best' prostitute there) although lots of local rap music is just as bad/worse IMHO.

Good for broadening your vocabulary I guess!

DutchCowgirl · 01/10/2023 07:59

I really like the german medieval/folkscene : Corvus Corax , Schandmaul, In Extremo.

more pop music: Peter Fox - Haus am See.

At the moment my son is practicing german while listening Rammstein but it depends on your taste of music and how advanced you are already (songs like “Du hast” and “Ohne Dich”)

ShoesoftheWorld · 01/10/2023 08:22

I keep thinking of more:

Keimzeit
Element of Crime
2raumwohnung

Totehosen - jazz rap in German

That's the first time I've heard Die Toten Hosen described as "jazz rap"!

RSintes · 01/10/2023 08:28

Difigiano is another which is big at Oktoberfest this year.... google it first to find out what it means 😂

schnubbins · 01/10/2023 08:33

Helene Fischer or if you like Schlager Marianne Rosenberg or Kerstin Ott.

FarEast · 01/10/2023 10:52

Well, it's kind of laid back rap @RSintes

I also quite like the loud shouty Extrabreit and Rammstein.

FarEast · 01/10/2023 10:53

And one of my favourite songs ever is Reamonn's "Supergirl" - the rest of his stuff is not so great, but that's one of those star tracks.

HorseyHorsham · 01/10/2023 11:37

These are brilliant suggestions. Thank you all so much.
some of the bands/singers I already knew, but it is great to get more recommendations . It’s really appreciated.

What level is your German at, HH?

If you would like to get a grip on German Grammar at the same time as developing your conversational skills, a book I find invaluable is Hammer's German Grammar and Usage.

If you fancy some lighter reading, check out larger branches of W H Smith; I occasionally see magazines like Bunte on their foreign language shelf.
