Two very catchy and earwormy songs are Haus am See (Peter Fox) and Oh Shit, Frau Schmidt (Der Wolf). The latter was a fab example of late-90s German hip-hop.
2Raumwohnung and Wir Sind Helden are also very highly recommended as bands.
If you want to delve further back into German history and culture, there‘s Wolf Biermann as the most famous Liedermacher, and Die Legende von Paul und Paula (die Puhdys) as probably the most famous East German song of all time - all together now:‘Wenn ein Mensch lange Zeit lebt…‘

Ach - Totenhosen

Be careful with Die Toten Hosen - get the wrong version and you'll be singing Cunt in the Mirror instead of Guantanamera.

It's very catchy.

There was a metalcore version of Schnappi Das Kleine Krokodil online for a while, which was brilliant as well.

LadyGrey's mention of Wolf Biermann prompted me to think of a singer-songwriter who was one of the first German singers I ever heard - his songs were really popular on the radio when I first went to Germany, working for the summer in a large bearing manufacturing company in Schweinfurt.

I thought that I would add Reinhard Mey's 'Musikanten sind in der Stadt' to your selection. He enunciates the words very clearly, which I think might be helpful for you.

Just before I returned to the UK, I spotted a tape cassette by him in the bargain basket in a local department store and brought it home with me. This track comes from that album, Mein Achtel Lorbeerblatt.

I'm so glad you asked this question about German music, it's brought back so many memories.

Talking of Reinhard Mey, 'Einen Antrag auf Erteilung eines Antragsformulars' is a great satire on German bureaucracy.

If you want to delve further back into German history and culture,

And I'm sure there are loads of vids of the television programme, "Ein Schone Land" complete with Dirndls and Lederhosen on YouTube ...

Is it ZDR who still broadcast those programme on Sunday morning, or is it my bro-in-laws' sick sense of humour in subjecting me to this television programme?

There seems to be a series called "Mein schönes Land" which was originally broadcast by NDR between 2012 and 2014 but which is now shown on a Food and Lifestyle channel called Bon Gusto - it's shown on a Sunday morning and at other times as well.

You are right about all of the episodes being available on YouTube.

I'd not heard about this series until I saw your mention of it - I'm going to check out the episodes available on YouTube!

That's the first time I've heard Die Toten Hosen described as "jazz rap"!

Was thinking the same…if die Toten Hosen are jazz rap then I don’t understand jazz rap…their music is good for learning German, Campino sings with a very clear Düsseldorf accent.

Shopgirl1 · 08/10/2023 20:33

You should download the ZDF or das Erste app and just watch original German television.

RSintes · 09/10/2023 04:26

@FarEast
Nope, still wouldn't call Toten Hosen "laid back jazz rap"
Are we even talking about the same band, I wonder??
Campino et al would be pretty horrified I'd imagine to have their music described as laid back jazz rap.
