I wondered if there would be interest in a thread about theatre that isn't London? Any theatre from the big ones to your local.

I have tickets for...

Operation Mincemeat at The Lowry
Road at The Royal Exchange
The Tempest, The Cherry Orchard, Driftwood and Arturo Ui at the RSC.
The Thrill of Love, a play about Ruth Ellis at Wigan Little Theatre.

I haven't booked yet - I am a bit of a last minute booker. I will probably book:

The Bacchae at the Studio Theatre (Edinburgh)
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie at The Lyceum (Edinburgh)

Might have a look at what's on in Glasgow too for a change of scene

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/01/2026 20:01

Operation Mincemeat at The Lowry
Road at The Royal Exchange

Ditto!

Ive got a list but I can't remember what's on it apart from those two.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 13/01/2026 20:03

I want to see road, must check if there are still tickets! Going to see to kill a mockingbird next week at the Lowry

Comefromaway · 13/01/2026 20:04

Blood Brothers at Crewe Lyceum (a family member will be involved)
looking to book Priscilla & Operation Mincemeat.

singlenomingle · 13/01/2026 20:43

Also looking forward to Mincemeat and Mockingbird at the Lowry!

I hadn’t heard about the Ruth Ellis one but will def look into that, thanks @Kayemm

Kayemm · 13/01/2026 22:18

I forgot King Lear at the Royal Exchange with David Threlfall!

Looks like there's quite a few NW people 😄

Great thread!

Road and Private Lives at the Royal Exchange
Waiting for Godot at the Everyman
Good Golly Miss Molly at the New Vic
Waitress at The Lowry
Brassed Off at Leeds Playhouse

HewasH2O · 13/01/2026 22:59

I've been to see Dear England at the Mayflower, Southampton tonight. Most of the audience were there because of the football. I was there despite the football.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the chaps sitting behind me seemed bemused that people were there who had no interest in football itself and had no idea about the matches in the play. I haven't watched a football match in person or on TV since 1984 when Plymouth played Watford in the FA Cup.

Oh interesting!

This year we’re going to see:

Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief (Wales Millennium Centre)
Operation Mincemeat (Theatre Royal, Plymouth)
Legally Blonde (Theatre Royal, Plymouth)
Mamma Mia in early 2027 (Theatre Royal, Plymouth)

We are showing our age! I also saw I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire but I missed the miner's wives one. Good Golly had a West End run I think. Someone I know was dating one of the actors in it.

We didn't have a decent theatre in Cornwall in my teenage years, just amdram and local operatic societies. I used to save up and catch the train to watch Barnum & the like in Plymouth when musicals toured.

hellotojason · 14/01/2026 14:54

So far we have booked below - realised typing these that all ones I'm taking DD, need to see if there's any ones just for me coming up:

Six - Wolverhampton Grand
Operation Mincemeat - Wolverhampton Grand
Percy Jackson - Birmingham Hippodrome
The boy who harnessed the Wind - RSC

No more booked yet (well going to see Hunger Games with DD but that's a trip to the big smoke).
Will almost certainly book some more as we get discounted tickets through work for the grand.

Ive dusted off my list and added to it.

Road and Operation Mincemeat as mentioned

Also:
Macbeth (Bolton Octagon)
Two (another Jim Cartwright play) (Shakespeare North)
The Constant Wife (Lowry)
Crime and Punishment (Home)

And maybe:
War of the Worlds (Lowry)
The Fire Raisers (Hope Mill)

That should keep me busy in February and March!

Indeed!

I also saw World on Fire back then, it was revived a few years back.

do you remember Tunstall Tanzi? I think it was based on a play called Trafford Tanzi.

Plumbernightmare · 14/01/2026 18:35

2:22
Barnum
Legally Blonde

Comefromaway · 14/01/2026 20:29

I never saw Tunstall Tanzi but knew of it. It was indeed originally Trafford Tanzi.

more recently my daughter saw Marvellous. I missed it but would have liked ved to have seen it. My friend knows Nello very well.

Comefromaway · 14/01/2026 20:33

To give others context The New Vic Theatre under its director Peter Cheeseman was known for its series of documentary style musicals on local issues.

Kayemm · 25/01/2026 13:52

I've just booked Two at Shakespeare North.

I was also looking at Something Rotten at the Opera House before it transfers to the West End. There are so many tickets left! It's a bit worrying.

Saw Blood Brothers last night. It was very good. Considering I first saw it around 1995 ish & it’s been touring for years it still seemed fresh. Excellent cast.

I’ve just looked at Something Rotten - sounds fun, but it isn’t till June/July so way too early for us to book, we don’t know when we’re doing what for holidays.

Comefromaway · 25/01/2026 19:52

Something Rotten is a great show.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/02/2026 08:21

Saw Operation Mincemeat at the Lowry last night, excellent performances and lots of fun.

quarrybanks · 19/02/2026 18:13

I wish I’d booked that, it sounds great.

Road at the Royal Exchange was great - really immersive.
