Regional Theatre, what are you watching?

I wondered if there would be interest in a thread about theatre that isn't London? Any theatre from the big ones to your local.

I have tickets for...

Operation Mincemeat at The Lowry
Road at The Royal Exchange
The Tempest, The Cherry Orchard, Driftwood and Arturo Ui at the RSC.
The Thrill of Love, a play about Ruth Ellis at Wigan Little Theatre.

Went to see Blood Brothers today in Hertford, it was excellent and even though i have seen it several times when it was in the West End , it really got me.

We are going to Stratford laters in October to see As You Like it,

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/05/2026 08:02

@Kayemm, I liked Teechers but didnt love it. The performances were great, but found the the play itself a bit disjointed. (In comparison, I saw Bouncers last year and loved that.)

Landofthesummerpeople · 10/05/2026 08:09

I watched Malory Towers in Bath this week with my Mum and daughter, we all loved it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/05/2026 08:43

Good to know, I've booked Malory Towers for June!

It was on my list in 2020 but obviously the world ground to a halt, so I was very pleased to see it come back. Ive seen a couple of Wise Children productions since then and loved them.

I do love their productions, every little detail is so carefully thought out. I hope that you enjoy it.

Enjoyed Bank of Dave. It was very funny if a bit surreal at times. It was obviously an appreciative local audience so I do wonder how it would transfer to other areas.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/05/2026 15:03

Ooh, I'm seeing BoD later this week. Sounds promising.

I once saw a play about Enron that included dancing dinosaurs so im definitely game for 'funny and a bit surreal'.

Comefromaway · 10/05/2026 19:25

I think it perhaps needs refining a little. But for a first run of a brand new musical before it transfers to Curve it’s very promising.

The cast are very talented. Hayley Tamaddon & Claire Moore are incredible. (Ds’s friend is in it too)

Comefromaway · 10/05/2026 19:26

No dancing dinosaurs but I raise you (not going to tell you exactly what, you’ll see).

Murder for Two at the Stephen Joseph which I am looking forward to. Over the past few years, their programming has changed focus and I go a fair bit now.

Saw and loved this.
The SJT is my (relatively) local theatre and I have tickets for a few things coming up theire - next is Spitfire Girls in a couple of weeks.

JustMeHello · 11/05/2026 21:04

I love the SJT. it's about a 2 hrs drive for me, but it's probably been my most visited theatre in the last few years. I haven't ever come away annoyed that something was disappointing, they always seem to have entertaining shows, and often very joyful ones (I'm pretty sick of worthy deep stuff). Plus it's a great auditorium and the prices are excellent. I'm also seeing Spitfire Girls in a couple of weeks.

(Highlight of a trip to Scarbs in addition to the SJT, is a trip to Winking Willie's.)

Comefromaway · 11/05/2026 21:19

Spitfire Girls sounds interesting. I’m surprised it’s not coming to the New Vic given our local connection with the Spitfire.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/05/2026 08:05

We saw Mockingbird in Leeds last Autumn and I loved it. I couldn’t work out how they’d stage such a long and complicated story. I wasn’t disappointed.

Coming up - Brassed Off in Leeds Playhouse in June and Mean Girls in Sheffield in November.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/05/2026 08:06

I’m curious about Trainspotting The Musical, which I have seen advertised in York. It doesn’t feel like a very musically kind of story.

Comefromaway · 12/05/2026 10:37

I'd like to see Brassed Off

quarrybanks · 12/05/2026 11:34

I’m going to Brassed Off, saw it at the New Vic a few years back and it was great.

bruffin · 13/05/2026 15:28

Going to The Park theatre in Finsbury Park for Whodunnit 4. Its a fundraiser for the theatre they do every couple of years and lots of fun

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/05/2026 07:20

Well, Bank Of Dave was great. Lots of fun, brilliant cast who gave off real energy and seemed to be loving their parts. Imaginative telling of the story.

I think it'll do well - classic underdog / David & Goliath; chimes with current cost of living pressures and feeling failed by 'the system'; whilst this is set in Burnley lots of other towns that aren't what they were; plus, obviously, funny and uplifting...

@Comefromaway And yes, I saw...😂 (To be honest, they had me at satnav)

PatienceOfEngels · 18/05/2026 10:31

Saw the RSC Hamlet last month. Didn't mind the design concept but the clock timer (to directly link to Titanic/iceberg) was a bit jarring.

Have Mean Girls booked for later in the year, also at the Marlowe/Canterbury.

This year have watched West Side Story (in Dutch) and heading to NT production of The Little Big Things in Amsterdam.
