I wondered if there would be interest in a thread about theatre that isn't London? Any theatre from the big ones to your local.

I have tickets for...

Operation Mincemeat at The Lowry
Road at The Royal Exchange
The Tempest, The Cherry Orchard, Driftwood and Arturo Ui at the RSC.
The Thrill of Love, a play about Ruth Ellis at Wigan Little Theatre.

Loved operation mincemeat at the Lowry this week and looking forward to Road next week. Thanks for the thread OP, great to get inspiration from others as it can feel like slim pickings compared to being in London. Loved this aspect of living there for a few years and was thoroughly spoiled for choice.

Medee · 20/02/2026 06:58

Operation Mincemeat
The high life (revival of Alan Cumming etc's sitcom)
Starstruck (Scottish Ballet doing Gene Kelly)
Matilda the Musical, Edinburgh

Queenage · 20/02/2026 07:02

Murder for Two at the Stephen Joseph which I am looking forward to. Over the past few years, their programming has changed focus and I go a fair bit now.

BuffysBigSister · 20/02/2026 07:14

I went to see Scottish Opera's The Great Wave last night at the Festival Theatre. A brand new opera based on the story of the Japanese artist Hokusai. Really enjoyed it.

TartanTwit · 20/02/2026 07:19

I saw the Thrill of Love at Wigan Little Theatre and it was superb but I think it's ended now

patooties · 20/02/2026 07:34

I saw Road last week and thought it was awful. Seeing Mincemeat next week, looking forward to it.

Macbeth in Stockport with DS next month.

UnimaginableWindBird · 20/02/2026 07:42

I'm off to see A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Leeds Playhouse tonight, and I have future plans to see the new Gentleman Jack ballet.

ExperiencedTeacher · 20/02/2026 07:57

Inside American Pie at Curve, Leicester.

and also Hunger Games but that’s in London.

anyonefancythetheatre · 20/02/2026 07:59

I’ve a good few booked this year. But Justin for my teenager. So waitress legally blonde mean girls. Also some am dram with anything goes and guys and dolls.

ExcellentDaydreams · 20/02/2026 08:17

So far this year:

Blood Brothers -Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford. I saw it in the West End in the 80s with Kiki Dee as Mrs Johnstone and it was as good as I remembered.

Dear England - New Victoria, Woking. I love football and loved this. Some of the likenesses were uncanny.

Booked:
The Red Shoes, also Woking
Operation Mincemeat - Fareham Live

I do go in to the West End quite a bit as well as it's not far for us.

@Comefromaway I didn't know there was a stage version of Marvellous, I love the film, it's one of the few DVDs I've hung on to. I remember going up to bed early on Christmas night a few years ago and sticking the telly on (I never normally watch in bed) and on it came, totally unexpected and a perfect end to the day.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2026 00:00

Saw Operation Mincemeat tonight - excellent!

onelumporthree · 24/02/2026 00:33

We saw Matthew Bourne's Red Shoes in Milton Keynes a couple of weeks ago. There's a couple of other shows on there over the next few months but we haven't decided what to go for yet.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 01/03/2026 18:49

Just checking in to say i made it to War Of The Worlds (by imitating the dog) at the Lowry this week. Shades of Day Of The Triffids and The Bridge (Iain Banks) i thought, although it's been a long long time since I read any of them so could be wrong.

VivienneDelacroix · 01/03/2026 18:58

I've saw Blood Brothers recently at Theatre Royal Brighton.

Later this year, so far I have tickets for:
The RSC's BFG at Chichester Festival Theatre
My Fair Lady -CFT
Antigone Exits -CFT
A Midsummer Night's Dream -CFT
Abigail's Party -Theatre Royal Brighton

I generally go to the theatre in the West End - but the CFT is a great local theatre to have on the doorstep.

MmeWorthington · 07/03/2026 14:53

The Tempest RSC

I live in the East Midlands and see quite a bit of stuff.
My nearest theatres are Sheffield but I go there far less in recent years, their programming has got fairly dull compared to the past, I find, and their prices are much higher. I am seeing the Ladies Football Club and Living next week though.

I really like Derby theatre, but the have really cut back on what they have on.

My absolute favourite theatre is Scarborough's SJT, it's so friendly and the seats are all great and the prices are fantastic and I've never seen a dud there. They have some really fun stuff. It's about borderline of how far I can travel in a day trip (about 2.5 hours each way) but one I go to maybe 4-5 times a year.

Other regulars for me are Nottingham, Buxton, Manchester (I especially like Home, which is easier for me to get to than the Royal Exchange, although that is a fantastic theatre).

My friend and I try to visit new (to us) theatres too, and we've worked our way round most of what is doable in day trips from us. I liked Birmingham Rep (saw Starter for 10 last year) and we're going to the Coventry Belgrade for the first time later this summer, but Leicester Curve is still on the to do list. I love the Arts in Cambridge, that's beautiful.

waltzingparrot · 08/03/2026 12:54

I'm looking forward to the premier of Atonement at Chichester Festival Theatre.

We're lucky to see things at Chichester before they send them up to London. Saw The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry there last year - hope they send it off round the country when it finishes its run in London so you can all see it - well worth seeing.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/03/2026 07:41

Saw Road at the Royal Exchange last night.

And left at the interval which is not something I've ever done before! I just wasn't engaged by it at all, too bitty. I kept thinking how I'd rather be at home with my pets so I left 😂

Bonus was walking to Manchester Victoria station through quiet streets whilst the cathedral bells were ringing. That was lovely.

PermanentTemporary · 12/03/2026 07:46

Snap @UnimaginableWindBird (great name btw) - am seeing Midsummer Nights Dream at the Oxford Playhouse this month.

Thanks for the thread, it’s inspired me to check up more of what’s on locally.

Captainj1 · 12/03/2026 07:53

I saw Mean Girls last week at the Opera House in Manchester with my DD. The vocals were absolutely superb although I thought Cady should have been played younger/more naive. Janis performing I’d rather be me was my highlight.

Then saw Mamma Mia at the Palace in Manchester. Was enjoyable but have seen it twice before and the cast this time wasn’t as strong vocally or in terms of chemistry.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/03/2026 07:27

Saw The Constant Wife at the Lowry earlier this week. Light-hearted fun, receptive audience. Although I was in the middle of the stalls, I struggled to hear some of the actors as their voice projection wasn't strong enough.

Kayemm · 20/03/2026 09:38

I wanted to leave Road at the interval but dh had got drinks 😀.

Everyone in it was very good it was just bleak and sad

Agree with this, it was impressive but depressing

Medee · 20/03/2026 14:31

Not at all bleak was Top Hat. Excellent tap dancing, ridiculous story, couple of minor ropey moments in Cheek to Cheek (2nd Jerry with 1st Dale) but marvellous froth.

JustMeHello · 22/03/2026 17:34

I saw Living last night in the Crucible small stage. It was excellent. Quite long, but very good and very moving. It covers a family through several decades, and really highlighted how time goes in a blink of an eye, people age and die before you know it... It had an excellent sountrack too.

I also saw the Crucible Ladies Football Club last year, which I really enjoyed. It was fun, but a little bit superficial and paint by numbers. It was about the ladies football in Sheffield during WW1, bit like League of their Own but with football.
