My DH and I have started going to the theatre Saturday matinees more regularly now our kids are older teens and we can leave them home alone on Saturday afternoons!!

We have booked Dracula so far as Australian friends have raved about it but wondering what else is coming out that people are excited about?

Honestly, I would go all in and just book a ticket for the theatre. Opera is immersive, you lose a lot with it being on screen. Everyone has surtitles these days, you literally get the text beamed up above the stage for you, you don't need to know it beforehand. And most opera stories are high melodrama nonsense anyway, when all's said and done.

I'd find something with some good strong tunes in a location that you can get to, and go. La boheme, turandot, Carmen, madame butterfly, la traviata ... if you're in England one of them will be playing within 150 miles of you this year, these are all staples of opera company repertoire and for good reason - they've got gorgeous big tunes that everyone has heard somewhere, and they're beautiful and will transport an audience to a magical place, time after time.

All the major opera companies have cheap seats and initiatives with reduced price tickets for young people/people new to opera/people on low incomes - you might be surprised, it can work out barely more expensive to see an actual in house performance than paying screening prices.

Thank you, I decided against the cinema stream and will look out for a live production, I’m on lots of mailing lists so I will keep my eyes peeled.

Coming back to say Into the Woods at the Bridge is absolutely brilliant- highly recommend it.

Oh good. We’re in London for a few days and have booked to see it, it’s a bit outside our usual fare.

NigellaWannabe1 · 18/01/2026 11:45

Those of you into opera, are tte Ellen Kent Farewell tour shows any good? I’ve heard mixed reviews. My daughter is starting to get into opera, she’s only 13 so I’m worried if it’s a “boring” production visually, it might put her off…

Echobelly · 18/01/2026 11:50

Going to try to book 'Into the Woods' soon at the Bridge Theatre. I'm sure 17 yo will want to see it with me, not sure about husband and DS.

Comefromaway · 18/01/2026 13:10

They are not usually boring visually, in fact they always used to be full of gimmicks like live animals on stage. The quality of the performers are not the same as a more esteemed opera company. They a

my daughter performed in two of them as a child (Aida & La Tosca) & I also chaperoned a group of children for La Boheme & Carmen. This was in the mid 2000s. Using local dance school children & often adult supernumaries was another gimmick but Dd loved the experience. In Aida she was one of a group of 4 child ballet dancers & in Tosca she was part of a 12 strong choir.

Anyone know if Dear England will come back to London after the tour (I know the tour includes Wimbledon but that is the wrong side for me). I want to take DS but am waiting until he is 10 as I am a bit worried about some of the language (should I be?)

Saw it last and absolutely loved it.

A few F and S words in it.

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/01/2026 15:30

Anyone been to see paranormal activity?
Dd 20 wants to go.
Is it scary? I am the type of person that can't even go on a ghost train at the fair.

MakeTeaNotWar · 23/01/2026 23:48

I’ve just been to see Prima Facie this evening on the opening night of its tour - Jodie Comer is phenomenal

Elevenseconds · 29/01/2026 21:23

Just back from Into The Woods at The Bridge. Absolutely fantastic, so glad I went. Laughed out loud in the first act and was genuinely moved in the second. Get a ticket if you can!

tinytemper66 · 29/01/2026 21:24

Lion Ling Sat matinee in February 🦁👑

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/01/2026 18:37

Added a few to our calendar.
DD and I are now going to
Miss Saigon in April.
Operation Mincemeat in May.

And she's bought us tickets to Sweeny Todd in Birmingham in July. V excited now they've released the cast of the lead as he's an ex-Phantom of the Opera who she'd love to see.

FollowSpot · 31/01/2026 19:44

I must stop buying tickets!

Last night was Lost Atoms at Lyric Hammersmith

I have tickets for Harold Fry, Inter Alia, Summerfolk, Teeth’n’Smiles .

Saw Playboy of the Western World the other week.

Florencesndzebedee · 01/02/2026 14:32

Loved Kenrex, it was spellbinding and so well executed. Also liked The Other Palace theatre - it was comfortable and even the cheaper seats are good. Have booked another performance there that has good reviews too, a comedy (Josh Tothill) - think this has transferred from the Edinburgh fringe. Will report back.

Bought Into the Woods tickets on the strength of this thread! Looking forward to it.

Oh my goodness, Arcadia was brilliant. So funny and really moving in the end. Excellent staging.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 04/02/2026 22:57

Very glad to hear that, @ElizabethVonArnim - I’m going next week!

I've been contemplating this for a while. I think I'll add it to the list.
