My DH and I have started going to the theatre Saturday matinees more regularly now our kids are older teens and we can leave them home alone on Saturday afternoons!!

We have booked Dracula so far as Australian friends have raved about it but wondering what else is coming out that people are excited about?

agree totally

laughingnow · 10/06/2026 20:47

I however disagree!

SnowFrogJelly · 11/06/2026 00:37

Saw the Tempest last night. It's not a play I know well so I found the treatment of Caliban really interesting and I liked the ending but as I said I don't know the play well enough to have felt like it didn't sit right.

The staging though. Wowsers.

Also the RSC shouldn't allow any drinks into the auditorium. Obviously the plastic 'glasses' aren't at risk of breaking but the number of times we heard them toppling over under people's seats and falling down a step to the level in front was distracting.

I went to see it last night. Amazing! The staging was brilliant and I loved the music. Much funnier than I’d expected. I really liked the Rousseau jungle backdrop. The lady playing Ariel is insanely talented, I can’t believe she could sing like that suspended upside down from a harness!

There was a bonus Q&A afterwards with some of the cast (including Sir Ken) which was very interesting, although it got a bit bogged down in questions about colonialism. Everyone was very keen to make it clear they think colonialism was bad, which led to lots of “more of a comment than a question”-type observations from the audience. But a nice and unexpected end to the evening, overall.

We were there last night too! Enjoyed the q and a, great performances and the staging. The physicality of flying for that length of time, acrobatics and singing was amazing. We saw Branagh’s Lear a few years ago and felt disappointed but his performance as Prospero and command of the text was a complete contrast.

Saw 2:22 a few nights ago - would recommend if you’re not of a nervous disposition!

Booked preview tickets for Arcadia's move to West End a week on Monday, and also got tickets for me, DS and DH to see 'Indy!' which us 3 people trying to recreate all the Indiana Jones films, at Wilton's Music Hall. It was almost sold out, certainly for groups of seats together, so I'm glad I got hold of them when I did.

Oh that sounds fun! We saw one man do Die Hard at the Kings Head theatre a few years ago and it was great. (One man Poe is also excellent)

arcadia was very good too and I think it's kept its cast.

We saw the Die Hard one at the Kings Head as well, as DH absolutely loves the film, both really enjoyed that.

This Indiana Jones one sounds like it might be a bit like a show we saw in Edinburgh with two guys and a sound artist doing Jurassic Park, which was hysterical.

berlinbaby2025 · 17/06/2026 23:16

I saw Care this afternoon at the Young Vic. Some really powerful moments and fabulous acting but I didn't enjoy it as much as @Sloelydoesit did and thought it was a little overlong. But I would recommend. It's on until July 11th.

Sadly, the experience was marred by some inappropriate comments and laughter by some audience members, mostly from bored-looking school kids.

Next up is probably Oh, Mary in August as I want to see it when Cole Escola is back in London playing Mary.

LIZS · 20/06/2026 19:45

Saw Cyrano de Bergerac this afternoon and would thoroughly recommend. Adrian Lester was outstanding but it was a true ensemble piece and music well integrated to the performance,

HauntedBungalow · 20/06/2026 21:48

Quick shout out for The Spy Who ... currently in the provinces where I've just seen it.

I really liked it, and it's one of my all time favourite books/films so I was a bit apprehensive. I particularly liked the way it intermittently brought in the "rest of the world/humanity?" while being very closely focused on the characters but then leaving them starkly to themselves at the moment of realisation. Quite chilling actually. And the chemistry between the lovers was very good, very tender.

Just booked for One Day and Avenue Q!

Loved One Day in Edinburgh, have also booked for the transfer.
Saw Jesus Chris Superstar at the weekend and it was marvellous.

just booked for Golden Boy with Josh O’Connor and Desire under the Elms, at the Almeida.

On a similar subject, many theatres now with the anti-plastic madness sell water only in cans and I wish they'd go back to plastic bottles. The noise of cans of water being opened even still water is so irritating and even worse if its sparkling water with a spluttery fizz. A metal ring pull makes a surprising amount of noise in a still auditorium whether accompanied by a fizz or not.

It's not madness to be anti plastic. They should encourage people to bring water bottles to fill from a tap provided.

Comefromaway · 23/06/2026 14:53

The thing I don't like about the cans is that they are not re-sealable. If I buy a bottle of water I want to be able to drink from it, then re-seal it and carry it with me on the journey home.

Being able to refill your bottle would be agood idea. I was at a concert on Sunday and it was encouraged to take your own empty bottle to refill as many tinmes as you liked inside.

EnchantingDecoration · 23/06/2026 14:58

Some places do those aluminium water bottles now those are better both for noise and for not spilling, as well as being refillable.

Comefromaway · 23/06/2026 16:07

They are heavy to carry around though and oddly say on them that they are not refillable. (I always ignore that and refill them though.) They are very expensive too.

EnchantingDecoration · 23/06/2026 16:15

Everything's expensive in the theatre, but I do re-use them. Need to do the lid up tightly though, I tend to stick an empty one in my bag and hope I find water fountains.

I'm off to Jesus Christ Superstar on Thursday - if the heatwave and the trains play ball!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/06/2026 22:13

I've booked Sh!tfaced Shakespeare for Liverpool. Might be terrible, but the short clips I've seen suggest it might be funny.

Echobelly · 24/06/2026 15:09

Saw Arcadia on Monday, it was fantastic, one of the best modern plays and productions I've seen. So funny but ultimately also moving too, with a great cast.

Has anyone else seen The Misanthrope at the National? I went on Saturday, mixed feelings. Press night last night and most of the reviews are 3 which seems fair, couple of 2s which seems harsh.

I really enjoyed the scenes between Sandra Oh and Paul Chahidi but the script and production don’t do them many favours. I’ve seen Crimp’s modern take before and this is updated again but this time seems to signpost without ever really making the points. The production is so loud and showy that its easy to miss parts of dialogue (especially when two equally loud groups are talking on stage and drowning each other out).

Not sure if it was just me being picky but I felt the two leads were let down by the overall piece.

We just actually returned our tickets for that based on the reviews. That is one real bonus of the national - they will take tickets back no problem.

We are off to the orange tree on Friday to see black comedy - really looking forward to that.

My DS saw it and said it was dreadful
