My DH and I have started going to the theatre Saturday matinees more regularly now our kids are older teens and we can leave them home alone on Saturday afternoons!!

We have booked Dracula so far as Australian friends have raved about it but wondering what else is coming out that people are excited about?

We should really go to Operation Mincemeat, I’ve heard great things about it from loads of people.

whatohwhattodo · 04/05/2026 21:49

I finally saw greatest showman this weekend - will be booking again for me and my teens when it opens in London:

Very excited to see ‘High School musical’ transferring to London (A Wembley theatre). My ds loved it back in the day, so will definitely book tickets for it.

OldieButBaddie · 05/05/2026 15:23

My dh went to Cuckoo's nest and loved it (for a work thing) so I must book!
We loved Arcadia so much too! And Liaisons Dangereuses

Saw The Authenticator a couple of weeks ago at the Dorfman which was lovely

Going to this on Friday which we saw at fringe last year and loved so much!
An Adequate Abridgment of Boarding School Life as a Homo | Riverside Studios

Speaking of which, is anyone going to Fringe in August? Recommendations welcomed!

An Adequate Abridgment of Boarding School Life as a Homo - Riverside Studios

Meet Johnny. 18-years-old and in his final year at an all-boys boarding school. A member of the 7ths rugby team, Britney Spears mega fan and a flaming homosexual, Johnny fails miserably to fit into the school’s (rather rigid) mould.Enter Harry, the con...

Saw Operation Mincemeat yesterday. It was fabulous (except I was sitting behind the world’s tallest man which always bloody happens to me).

Highly recommended.

Just booked Cats this summer in London. It’s outdoors too! 🐈‍⬛

Comefromaway · 06/05/2026 13:59

My son's friend is in Cats.

They just released Standing Stage tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar for this summer at the Palladium so I’ve booked some for July. Sounds like it will be an interesting experience.

I saw operation mincemeat (touring) yesterday and it took me a little while to warm up to it, but then I loved it. I've now booked for the West End performance (bargain tickets for London!) for me and a friend when we are there in half term.

It took me a while to get into it as well, during the first half I was sitting there thinking "this is a bit over-hyped" but it got better and better and I'd like to see it again in the West End too.

One I'm not looking forward to: I'm being dragged by DH to the NT Live screening of The Playboy of the Western World. I have only heard bad things about this production. Please tell me it is not going to be as bad as I'm expecting?

I saw it at the National and enjoyed it. It took a while to get attuned to the very strong irish accents but it is actually a great story and pretty relevant today in terms of what is classed as a celebrity. You might be pleasantly surprised.

laughingnow · 08/05/2026 15:00

I saw Playboy of the western world at the National having covered it at university. It was very disappointing, quite boring and silly actually. It hasn’t stood the test of time. It’s mostly set in a snug of a public house which is ridiculous on the huge stage, no intimacy at all. Siobhan McSweeny was very good, all the males were poor and Nicola Coughlan just played her usual ditsy, busty blonde. A miss for the National, unusually.

GCAcademic · 08/05/2026 15:06

Oh dear. Though I'm taking hope from the fact that at least one person liked it! Nicola Coughlan sets my teeth on edge, she completely ruined the last series of Derry Girls for me.

PatriciaHolm · 08/05/2026 16:55

DP liked it, I didn't really! I couldn't see why anyone cared about the main character at all. But i do know others who liked it so fingers crossed!

SnowFrogJelly · 09/05/2026 01:04

Going to see Mass at the Donmar tomorrow

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/05/2026 16:52

Watched Rocky Horror in Liverpool last night.

The people who were losing their minds at Jason Donovans performance baffled me because he was mostly shit. V little stage presence and came across like he'd had a few too many drinks before the show. I've seen him much better in other roles.

Sloelydoesit · 13/05/2026 22:58

I have booked Trainspotting the musical for July. Managed to get some decently priced tickets - circle but front row. My son is super excited 😊

Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree · 14/05/2026 17:11

I saw The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind at Soho Place this week. It was absolutely brilliant. I would thoroughly recommend if you can get tickets. Such a talented cast and such a fun, lively performance contrasting so movingly with moments of real emotion. I've been telling everyone I know to go.

Comefromaway · 14/05/2026 20:09

My son worked on that show in Stratford. He said the music is lovely.

It really is. The father sings a song in the second act and is so moving. The staging was really clever and the lighting and choreography/movement deserves special mention too. Just a really great production.

Placestogo · 15/05/2026 21:23

just seen interlia and it was extremely powerful, especially as a mother…

Silverbirchleaf · 19/05/2026 09:01

Not quite a theatre show, but just saw John Barrowman in his ‘Life in musicals’ concert. What a voice! He puts so much emotion and performance in every song he sings. Worth seeing.

KingscoteStaff · Yesterday 13:02

There are some returns for the last week of Les Liasons! Just snapped 2 up, plus some for the Oresteia at The Bridge.

I saw Liaisons just this week - it was fabulous. I would go to watch Lesley Manville reading a recipe book but the whole cast and setting work much better than I’d expected. Definitely worth snagging any returns!
