Ok, all music snobs. What albums do you feel yuo really should be familiar with but aren't (and are slightly ashamed about it?)

I've gone through the CD collection, spurned Flweetwood Mac and Norah Jones and am going to finally get to grips with music bore essentials.

Thus, have Troutmask Replica (Captain Beefheart) Songs in the key of life (Stevie Wonder)and something grim and industrial by Joy Division out ready to play.

Gawd help me.

It took me ages to really 'get' Pet Sounds but I love it now (I think it pre-empted Sgt Pepper though?) Same with Forever Changes

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:13

Thanks - knew it had something or other to do with sgt peppers - in that case its more innovative than I thought.

SixSpotBurnet · 25/04/2008 14:15

I have never really "got" Bob Dylan .

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:21

Is it really important to 'get' music - can we just like or dislike or is that not subjective and too simple? I don't think I get Bob Dylan either but I like singing bad impersonations in the car loudly

moonshine · 25/04/2008 14:22

I think Morrissey is a genius with words - shame he seems to have been/turned into a first-class tw*t all the time. this isn't a new article but interesting reading re: seminal albums.

aDad · 25/04/2008 14:23

No I can't do bob dylan either.

Same with the Beatles. Ok one or two albums are okay, but mostly it does nothing for me at all.

Then there are a whole load of jazz greats and funk masters, all completely lost on me.

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:23

in fact - I have tried to get the whole beat thing and tbh its a bit over my head.

WowOoo · 25/04/2008 14:26

Have got Stuart Maconies Freak SHow BBC6 on. Very nice...

WowOoo · 25/04/2008 14:28

Goldfrapp's new one is great if you liked their first one.

WowOoo · 25/04/2008 14:28

Misread the Q. I'll get my coat!!!.........

SixSpotBurnet · 25/04/2008 14:28

I heart BBC 6Music .

MargaretMountford · 25/04/2008 14:28

yes, second that about Goldfrapp

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:29

According to moonshine's link dylan invented modern rock music. Bloody hell

Tortington · 25/04/2008 14:32

roxy music
japan
bowie
springstean

dear lord god help me. seriously?!

just cos its of yesteryear doesn't make it good.

music is very personal and emotive. listening to things becuase you should is very lemming like.

most of the bands that you should listen to becuaes everyone raves they are "classic man!" is usually an indicator that they are complete shit - its rather like watching an art house film that won at cannes - its like a big neon that says "i am shit - dont do it!"

SixSpotBurnet · 25/04/2008 14:33

Hello Custardo! Good to see you! Was worried that you'd gone!

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:40

I guess sometimes though it can be easy to get stuck in a music glut and recommendations make it easier to explore new things and maybe find something you do like? If your personal and emotives happen to be Roxy Music or Japan then so be it?

SixSpotBurnet · 25/04/2008 14:42

What do you rate then, Custardo? What are your seminal (can't say that without sniggering, somehow) influences?

Tortington · 25/04/2008 15:33

i like certain songs rather than saying i am dedicated to any one band in particular.

i have no classical greats - apart from queen maybe aerosmith depending on your POV.

moondog · 25/04/2008 18:35

Dada, you need to get acquainted with Houses of the holy m'dear-and fast.

Born to run is good yeah, but i don't see that he is doing anything pertic. unique.

Flesh & Blood is best Roxy album even.

Kevin Ayers? Did he do an album called Glimmer? I've got it and never got into it.

DaDaDa · 25/04/2008 23:30

Unique? No. I'm not even a Springsteen fan (if you'd have told me 10 years ago I'd defend him I wouldn't have believed you) but Born To Run is just elemental. Soul music. As long as I don't have to look at his gurning mush in a cap sleeved T shirt.

Custy. C'mon. Maybe people just have different taste to you. I can't hear this without dancing like an embarrassing Dad. Funny that.

moondog · 26/04/2008 20:27

I have realised that aobve is precisely why i can't be doung with him at all.

Kevin Ayres - I grew up with Joy of a Toy and it still sends shivers down my spine.
