Ok, all music snobs. What albums do you feel yuo really should be familiar with but aren't (and are slightly ashamed about it?)

I've gone through the CD collection, spurned Flweetwood Mac and Norah Jones and am going to finally get to grips with music bore essentials.

Thus, have Troutmask Replica (Captain Beefheart) Songs in the key of life (Stevie Wonder)and something grim and industrial by Joy Division out ready to play.

Gawd help me.

One of our household sayings is "I can draw anything - as long as it's David Sylvian," which is a reference to dh's misspent schooldays doodling pictures of David Sylvian on the covers of all his exercise books.

zippitippitoes · 25/04/2008 10:23

what about roxy music albums one and two

are they listenable still i have them on vinyl hence no idea what they sound like now

eno? ditto

SorenLorensen · 25/04/2008 10:23

No, he was about a minute's walk away streets away from where I am sitting right now, in Macclesfield

MargaretMountford · 25/04/2008 10:24

I have no qualms about ignoring the whiny toss that is Coldplay and James Blunt

SorenLorensen · 25/04/2008 10:24

There was meant to be a 2 in there - ie., a minute's walk, 2 streets away.

zippitippitoes · 25/04/2008 10:24

fluffyanimal · 25/04/2008 10:33

My dh is very into the Fall. I bought him the Fall Peel Sessions box set a while back. I have never even attempted to go there but feel I should so as to know dh and his misspent youth a bit better.

I love Pink Floyd but I'm afraid I really can't quite do the Syd Barrett stuff.

margoandjerry · 25/04/2008 10:37

Moondog, me too re Stevie. He is my number one all time favourite. Fulfillingness First Finale is my fave although Innervisions is the more "approved" favourite. I listen to Stevie every day of my life

If I had a son I would call him Stevie.

REally, really hate Joy Division and New Order. Can't get beyond that football song. Hate the whole thing.

DaDaDa · 25/04/2008 13:17

"One of our household sayings is "I can draw anything - as long as it's David Sylvian," which is a reference to dh's misspent schooldays doodling pictures of David Sylvian on the covers of all his exercise books"

Your DH sounds very comfortable in his masculinity Soren.

SheikYerbouti · 25/04/2008 13:30

yOU ALL NEED SOME fRANK zAPPA IN YOUR LIVES.

DP and I are opposites when it comes to moosik

Dp like bland 1990s shit

He says I am a musical snob - I love loads of hippy shit, like Gong, the Doors and Jefferson Airplane. Also lovbe Led Zep, Jimmi, early Pink Floyd etc.

Agree with eralier postabout kiddie music. We say NO to it. DS1 like the doors. We are listening to the LA woman album at the mo - Ds1's fave song is The WASP (he sings "I'll tell ya about Texas Radio and the Big Feet")

Katie Melua sings like Margherita Prachatan

James cunt and Coldplay spout a load of turgid shit and their records are purchased by people who don;t really like music.

thequietone · 25/04/2008 13:35

Pet Sounds. I need to understand what's so ground-breaking about it (I should be able to figure it out, being a music grad, but I can't).

DaDaDa · 25/04/2008 13:42

[whispers] I don't think Coldplay are really that bad. They're just extremely over exposed and have spawned a legion of drippy imitators (not that they're original themselves; it's 3 parts Bunnymen, 2 parts early Radiohead and a pinch of Tim Buckley)

James Blunt, however, is the Antichrist.

How's that Music Topic coming along MNHQ?

zippitippitoes · 25/04/2008 13:43

i have a photo of me with frank zappa in lithuania

well his statue lol

artydeb · 25/04/2008 13:51

I've just bought the Age of the Understatement album(is it still called that?) Its pretty good for new stuff. Possibly because of a 60's beatley / hollies kinda resonance to it. Anything Doors has gotta be worth a go. And Donovan - not really groundbreaking but so lovely. Ooh - and I reckon Nirvana's Nevermind and the Stone Roses first album are both must haves. Thequietone - Wasn't Pet sounds groundbreaking because of its experimental sounds like the car horn etc? Apparently recorded on the back of Sgt Peppers to rival the Beatles - It's very pretty to listen to but i'm not so convinced of its earth shattering status.

moonshine · 25/04/2008 13:51

Pet Sounds is fantastic! I also [whispers as well] like a lot of Coldplay stuff but think overplay on all those bloody tv trailers has killed it for me and now it is starting to sound all the same.

I have never ventured into the world of Bob Dylan so have no concept of his 'genius' really. Just cannot abide his voice. Also critics always go on about Nick Drake but I have never got round to acquainting myself with his music either.

moonshine · 25/04/2008 13:52

Has no-one mentioned the Smiths either?

SheikYerbouti · 25/04/2008 13:54

I don;pt really "get" Bob Dylan. He always sings like he's got his headphones on.

SheikYerbouti · 25/04/2008 13:55

My mate Paul always raves about Nick Cave, but I can't get into his stuff

artydeb · 25/04/2008 14:01

The Smiths - I do try but... my friend is a big smiths / joy division fan - she gets it but i'm in the cold a bit with those. Bob Dylan's alright on the right day.
