Ok, all music snobs. What albums do you feel yuo really should be familiar with but aren't (and are slightly ashamed about it?)

I've gone through the CD collection, spurned Flweetwood Mac and Norah Jones and am going to finally get to grips with music bore essentials.

Thus, have Troutmask Replica (Captain Beefheart) Songs in the key of life (Stevie Wonder)and something grim and industrial by Joy Division out ready to play.

Gawd help me.

Ay.
Dh swears I am missing out.
They (some of 'em anyway) were on Radio 2 last night and sounded surprisingly cheery.

aahh, Songs in the key of life

you won't regret it

snowleopard · 24/04/2008 22:06

PJ Harvey. I can't stand her but have this niggling feeling I should and would like her if I could just somehow get into it...

moondog · 24/04/2008 22:06

I am huge Stevie fan since very small (my mother has excellent taste) but this always passed me by somehow.

I own troutmask Replica (I think)
or maybe some other Captain Beefheart
I have no recollection at all of what it sounds like!

moondog · 24/04/2008 22:07

I felt like that for years about Patti Smith then suddenly I saw the light and realised she was merely a navel gazing bore. Anyway 'Because the night' is shite and for years i thought Pat Benatar sang it.

ah, Songs In the Key....I am ed moonie!!

I really should get to know Dark Side of the Moon ( no, not you!). Have it here. Any words of encouragement??

moondog · 24/04/2008 22:49

Ah Pan
I thought you might be along.
I slipped out the disco mix cd you so kindly sent me to put on Stevie. It's funny,I realise I know most of it anyway.
Deffo. get into 'Dark'.To make experience more intense, roll massive spliff, borrow a student hovel for the evening and drink 15 tins of Kestrel lager.

My parents were once at an eclipse (total) party where they blasted this out as darkness fell.

troutmask replica is fantastic album i love captain beefheart deeply truly madly
give it a go

joy divison are not as depressing as people always say they are

its a dull boring thing to say about them and imho opinion shows they havent got it

songs in key of life is great too

moondog · 24/04/2008 23:02

The bends is good.
A little unsettling.

Trouble is, as you get older, general day to day shit is unsettling and disturbing thus yuo don't really want more of it in yer music.

Conversely, when young with zero responsibilities, music injects a bit of danger.

Blimey,it won't be long before i buy one of those generic Pan Pipes compilations that you can listen to in quick blasts on those jukebox things in Woolies.

Or a Katie Melhua album.
