Ds has been listening to a lot of Simon and Garfunkel lately, so today we had

"Just a come on from the horse on seventh avenue"

which I think is a great improvement on the original, in fact

Great thread idea....a friend's daughter used to think Take That sang 'Wash your back for good'! and my DH used to sing 'Tie me up, oh baby , tie me up' for that old dance track that I think was entitled Try me out!

HonorMatopoeia · 07/07/2006 21:55

Actually....maybe he was just hinting!!

crazydazy · 07/07/2006 21:55

My dad used to play Queen constantly whilst I was young I always though in Bohemian Rhapsody the words were

".......spending his life cooking pork sausages"

instead of

".....sparing his life from this monstrosity"

strange child I was.

BettySpaghetti · 07/07/2006 21:59

A while ago we heard DD (6) singing "We don't want no fat girls" -eventually realised she had misheard Gwen Stefani's "Ain't no Hollerback Girl"

FrannyandZooey · 07/07/2006 22:00

Ah, Queen. My mum's friend thought that "we are the Champions" where it says "you brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it", was "you brought me fame and fortune and Angela Goldsmith"

I used to think there was a line in a song in the 80s (can't remember the title, think it was Family Man or something)that went "Daddy's going to buy you a dream McGlintoo", but always wondered what a McGlintoo was. Turned out tobe "Daddy's going to buy you a dream to cling to"

Also once knew someone who thought that in the Creed in Anglican churches, the bit that goes "and He suffered under Pontius Pilate" was "and he suffered under a bunch of spiders"!

BadHair · 07/07/2006 22:09

DH thought the the Kaiser Chiefs were singing "I fake Tourettes" rather than "I predict a riot". It does sound quite close, actually.

I spent years thinking that The Smiths were singing "The Queen is dead boys, and it's such a lovely day", rather than "..., and it's so lonely on a limb".

Had a friend at university who used to mis-hear lyrics on a regular basis. According to her, the KLF sang "They're justified and they're ancient and they drive a nice green van", rather than "ice cream van". "Rubber duck I'll come bouncing back to yoo-hoo-hoo" was another one, rather than "rubber ball".

My dear late lamented friend (no longer with us) had a favourite, which was not a mis-hearing but something that probably has a technical term, a rhyme that is foreshadowed but then isn't actually used - from Leo Sayer

"miles and miles of empty space
in between us
the telephone can't take the place
of your

smile"

[you have to sing it, with the emphasis on "tween-us". Trusting I have been blatant enough]

HonorMatopoeia · 07/07/2006 22:22

Bink that's incredibly funny when you sing it out loud and your DH says 'What on earth....'??!! Think he thinks I've lost it now!!

HonorMatopoeia · 07/07/2006 22:22

What's that Queen song where they go on about 'fried chicken'??

Cappucino · 07/07/2006 22:23

bink I get it [clever emoticon]

dh always heard the lyrics to the old country song 'Lucille'

which actually is 'it's a fine time to leave me lucille, four hungry children and a crop in the field'

as 'four hundred children and a bath on two wheels'

oranges · 07/07/2006 22:26

I won five pounds off my dad who was convincived MAdonna sang "Gonna dress you up in nylon' for dress you up in my love

tiswas · 07/07/2006 22:27

OMG thats really bugging me now..I know it but can't remember....
Badhair PMSL at that one - well funny

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 22:28

dh heard "I'm a lizard baby, so why don't ya kill me?" by Beck. Yeah, I'd agree with him!

Dh sang it to his astonished mates to try and find out who the artist was! They pissed themselves!

The original goes "I'm a loser baby..."

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 22:29

Constant craving? Who was that by? dh had it down as "Lost in gravy!" Again he sang it to someone!

MerlinsBeard · 07/07/2006 22:33

my grandad used to think the poasis siong that went "you're gonna be the one that saves me" was "you're gonna be the one at sainsburys"!

tiswas · 07/07/2006 22:36

Constant craving - that was K D Lang

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 22:37

Oasis - "Lidl by Lidl" was how I read that! Thought it was a jingle for Lidl!

Gavin · 07/07/2006 22:46

"I believe in MILKO - you sexy thing !" dh still laughs ! Oh how he laughs !

ghosty · 07/07/2006 22:51

Crying with laughter over 'lost in gravy'

tallmummy · 07/07/2006 22:52

I thought Maisie Grey was singing I wear goggles when you are not here. I think it's my world crumbles.
Also used to sing" If everybody had a new shirt, across the USA, then everybody'd be surfin', surfin'USA"
Also(maybe it's time for a hearing test) thought
Basement Jaxx were singing "Where's your be-ard?" not "Head at"

heavenis · 07/07/2006 22:55

I used to think I'm every woman was Climb every woman.

northstar · 07/07/2006 23:17

I saw a website devoted to misheard lyrics before, think it's called kissthisguy dot com after a huge section of the american public misheard "excuse me while i kiss the sky" for "excuse me while i kiss this guy" back a few years ago. It's hilarious. These ones should all be on it.

SaintGeorge · 08/07/2006 12:09

HonorMatopoeia - Queen, One Vision.

It isn't a misheard lyric though - they DO say 'fried chicken'.

Many people assume it is a misheard version of 'one vision' but Freddie was messing about at the recording of the song and does say 'fried chicken'.

Classic Mercury

ilovecaboose · 08/07/2006 16:32

Until recently I was convinced this song went:
'Yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy and I feel like a big banana'

NOt sure why, but utterly convinced until OH found me a version and played it to me to show me how wrong I was.
