I go to a lot of trouble to avoid scary/disturbing films - enough of all that in real life for me.

But when I was 21 or so I saw 'Play Misty for me' on TV. Was terrified quite early on, but watched to the end, thinking if I knew how it came out I would feel better.

Then was awake for the next three nights with the radio and all the lights on, whimpering.

Mummyofeb, The Passion of the Christ was nothing like the Zeffirelli film. It was disturbing because it gloried in violence and sadism. It went way beyond what is described in the Bible and has been aptly described as a 'religious snuff movie'. It was also anti-Semitic.

I think the argument that anything is ok if it opens up discussions is pretty weak to be honest.

Hmmm, disturbing...

Hotel Rwanda - fabulous film but hard going

Midnight Express - Can't believe no one has mentioned that one yet

I've just watched the trailer for Hard Candy on Yahoo, that looks really disturbing.

The bit in Midnight Express where the guard is about to rape Billy and so he impales the guard on a cloakroom hook

5 Most disturbing for me are:

Angelas Ashes - Set in Ireland its one family's struggles throught the eyes of one of the little boys. True story.
Mississippi Burning - Set in southern america about three equal rights activist who were murdered by police in that area and the struggle to get people to speak out about it. True story.
The magdalin sisters - About girls in Ireland who were taken (for various reasons eg getting prgnt out of marriage/being raped etc) to be raised by nuns who would basically abuse them (in the name of god). True story.
The diary of Ann Frank - I can't believe that after all those years in hiding the didn't live.. again true story.
A time to kill - Not sure if it is a based on a true story or not but was very disturbing to watch.

scary:

The amytivile horror
Devils Rejects - Also disturbing

Yes, it was graphic and maybe it wasn't really necessary to show the violence to that extent. I did look away during some scenes. However, torture and being crucified is violent. I don't think it was a particularly good film anyway. It's just a vivid depiction of the death of Christ.

"I think the argument that anything is ok if it opens up discussions is pretty weak to be honest. "

I'm not saying that "anything is ok" nor am I excusing the use of graphic violence either but I don't agree that it was glorifying violence either.

There are loads of other films that use violence for the sake of using violence yet are enjoyed by the general public, no one bats an eyelid at that. Yet when showing the suffering of Christ, you get contraversy that it's too disturbing!

Are you Christian btw?
