Anyone doing this?
For those who don't know it's a challenge to write 50k words in a month. This year it starts on 1st November.

I'm up to 9k so far but my plot seems to have gone off at a slightly odd tangent, including killing off one of the characters. I'm really enjoying it though.

I don't know about the 10k words in 5 hours challenge. I think 50 words in 5 minutes is probably a far more realistic target for me.

Otterchocdog · 05/11/2008 11:41

lol at coppertop killing off one the characters.

Elibean · 05/11/2008 14:17

and enjoying it

coppertop · 05/11/2008 17:30

I've also told dh that if he's a PITA he does anything too annoying in the next few weeks, the husband in my story will also be killed off - painfully.

Litchick · 05/11/2008 18:00

Checked my word count today and it was under 4k .
Will have to seriously up the ante

cyteen · 05/11/2008 18:03

Don't worry Litchick, I haven't even broken 1k yet Unhappy baby = creative stall.

Elibean · 05/11/2008 18:22

And I am only on 1500, also unhappy baby etc

My course starts tomorrow morning, think it might help me decide whether to carry on with NaNoWriMo or just carry on writing at my own speed (till I join the writing workshop course in Jan - something else to panic about )

at your DS having to go to A&E, psychobabble. Hope he's feeling better soon.

I feel brain dead today. Day 6 blues anyone?

Litchick · 06/11/2008 10:58

I am on a serious deadline PsychoB, and would like to use Nano to get a first shitty draft down asap.
Also I am genuinely interested in if it can be done.
And writing is so very solitary that it's great to have people doing it alongside if that makes sense.

Glad your ds ok, Psycho. Not surprised you got nothing done that night.

Back from my first NaNo course morning and am utterly drained! Lots of good tips, and half an hour of writing in a group setting which does help hugely - nowhere to run, nothing to distract. Carried on in a cafe afterwards, and have nearly done 1500 today. But this is my only half day with childcare and no other committments, so not likely to do as well other days! We had to sign a sort of pact with the tutor re committing to the 50,000. I can't. I won't. Not possible, without being horribly stressed, with two under 5s, two birthdays, a house move and a cold.

He said it was ok to use the course to do as much as I could...phew...so my personal target is 20,000 and thats that

I do suddenly have a rough structure in my head, and can imagine having something to work with by the end of the month though...or hope to...

OK, clearly can't stop writing, too much coffee, sorry...

cyteen · 06/11/2008 15:13

that makes sense Elibean. i've decided i'm not going to get hung up on finishing; the way i see it, this is just a good spur to get me writing again. even the fact that i'm trying is good at this stage, so whatever i end up with will be worth something to me.

Elibean · 06/11/2008 16:34

We can always start a sub-group...NaHa(lf)NoWriMo

Saturn74 · 06/11/2008 22:40

8600 - of which about 8568 is total crud.

I didn't read the Philip Pullman one. He annoys me. So pretentious.

Still, maybe I shouldn't be so proud, my wordcount is pitiful atm.

otterchocdog · 07/11/2008 13:15

OK so I made myself read the pep talk email from PP and fair dos, he doesn't come across as a tw*t. Good advice.

(drags sorry ass to her desk)

Elibean · 07/11/2008 13:38

HC, I was thinking the same (re the crud, not the word count sadly) wonder if our inner critics are kicking in due to lack of editing?

It does feel very odd and sort of almost...naughty? irresponsible?? (not found right word) not to edit as I go along.

Have somehow written 500 words in snippets of 5 minutes here and 5 there - also feels odd. Literally wrote 100 words on the loo this morning instead of reading whatever magazine was lying around

Bumperlicious · 07/11/2008 20:08

Hello all

Just popping in before I embark on today's 2000 words!

I'm on target at 10000 (DH and I have a spreadsheet and everything ). Had a complete brain freeze earlier in the week so watch a film for inspiration which I am kind of ripping off - Die Hard 4.0

Good luck over the weekend everyone

Actually before I go here is a good inspiration from the No Plot No Problem Kit by Chris Batty (founder of Nano) there's one for each day, I'll try and remember to wow you with the best:

"Weird Fact: Before Jerry Springer launched his brawling freak show on daytime TV her was a serious progressive politician and highly respected mayor of Cincinnati. In his heyday many Ohioans even saw him as a likely candidate for the US presidency. As you begin worrying you may be pushing the bounds of believability for some of your characters, remember Jerry and the other countless realife stories you've heard that make the wildest fiction pale by comparison.

Don't be afraid to leverage the power of unlikely coincidences and unbelievable occurrences. Nothing could be more true to life."

This is obviously the tennet by which the writers of Die Hard live

Wow, well done Bumper. And thanks for the tip - though will try not to think too much about Jerry Springer at this time of night for fear of nightmares

I'm only up to 2000, but then thats counting from yesterday (start of course - it goes on till Dec 4th, so not quite in sync with the rest). Still not NaNo figures, but I'm amazed I've done that much.

Well done Psycho too, hope your dd sleeps well tonight.

At least you'll have more sorted work to tackle later - no notes here, therefore hotchpotch with major editing ahead

Totally agree - motivation main object, for me.

Weekends, aargh - dh away tomorrow all day too so fat chance of anything much.

aikigypsy · 08/11/2008 12:14

10 k in 5 hours? Not going to happen. I seem to max out at about 1000 words/hour although maybe I could get up to 1200 or 1500 in the final crunch.

I'm on target at about 12k now and about to set out on today's writing. We'll see.

My big bad news is that three or four nights ago we had a bit of a tea spill on the laptop and my comma key isn't working. So there are no commas in the last 6000 words or so or in any recent emails. I hope it won't be too huge a PITA to fix on the redraft.
