Write this time - the cheerleading and consistency thread

Hello! It seems some of us would like a daily thread, not just for accountability but to chat, and encourage, and to see that someone else is pleased that you or I wrote something today!

I have set this up for any writing. Whatever you are writing, let's be cheerleaders for each other. I have started and failed to finish a couple of Nanowrimos and just want to get in the habit of daily writing. I've got some story ideas and some memoir bits I'd like to do. From there, I hope to decide on a project for next year.

I might do 200 words, I might do 1000. I just want to post every time I get some writing into my day. And hopefully others will do too. Just feel free to put anything here really.

I shall be posting here tomorrow to tell you I have done some writing!

Thank you for the link! I would love to read some of people's writing, if it's allowed on here. I belong to an online writers' group which meets on zoom once a fortnight and we each read about 700 - 800 words of whatever we are writing. The last meeting there were 8 members present and it lasted about 2 hours.
Keep writing everyone!

Costacoffeeplease · 17/10/2022 21:04

Hopefully I will too, but I have a video to record to publicise my books tomorrow.

I have an added problem in that I’m disabled and typed both my books on my phone with my thumbs.

EmmaH2022 · 17/10/2022 21:13

Welcome! I want to do a bit every day but I am happy for it just to be a support thread for anything writing related at really. Even writing once a week is an achievement I think.

realistically I know that the overnights I do at mum's, those days I am not likely to get up early, so there might be two days in a week that not much happens. Maybe I should aim to just do a limerick or something so I've exercised my brain.

I won't post links to anything unless I start blogging again, which I might do.

Hi! Thank you for linking. I think a realistic goal of a little bit each day goes a long way to making it feel more ‘doable.’

Foreverinjeans · 17/10/2022 21:16

Thank you. Love this idea! It can be lonely tapping away.

i am determined to polish my book this year. It has been in draft form for like, forever. I know I have a good story and a cracking ending. But really struggling with the opening chapters. Anyway. i need to get back into good writing habits. Write everyday.

EmmaH2022 · 17/10/2022 21:20

A middle aged lady called Emma
Kept facing a boring dilemma
She wrote and she wrote
Then got on a boat
And left her computer forever.

Well, you never know what's going to happen! 😂
I promise to be serious tomorrow!

This is a great idea! My goal is to finish first draft of novel by Xmas - but I think it's unlikely now! I'm also writing a short story collection.

I've had a couple of books published previously but trying to do something more commercial this time.

An accountability thread/threat is exactly what I need!

I think it depends how much free time you have. 68 days till Xmas Day.

I worked on the principle "the first draft is you telling the story to yourself" though, so wouldn't be looking for much polish on a first draft.

beastlyslumber · 17/10/2022 21:30

We'll see! The story collection has to take priority since I already have a publisher for that. But it would be good to get a bit further with the novel too!

The amount of time I spend on MN, I really can't argue that I don't have time! 😂

btw I have just bought Will Storr's book "The Science of Storytelling" so need to make sure I read a bit daily as well.

Hello, I would like to join you all as well. Not a member of a writing group and have struggled to find writing buddies in the real world so this would be great!

I try to write every day. I'm coming towards the end of a major edit of my novel which has taken nearly a year, mainly because of work and relationship commitments. I'm feeling very demoralised at the moment and wondering if it's all been a waste of time. Came close to getting an agent last year but haven't submitted to anyone else since then. My goal is to start querying again before Xmas.

Costacoffeeplease · 18/10/2022 09:05

Well done on getting to this point.

Have you considered self publishing?

EmmaH2022 · 18/10/2022 09:13

Good morning all!

I woke up before the alarm went off - rare - and did 30 mins of writing from life. A good start. I actually hadn't even got halfway through my cup of tea, amazing.

BecauseofIndia another finished novel, another hero of mine!

I also wondered if you'd thought about self publishing.

Avidreader69 · 18/10/2022 09:45

@BecauseOfIndia Good morning. What is the subject of your novel? And how long is it?

Hi @Avidreader69 I've been told by those in the know (agent) that it is 'high end book club'. The word count is constantly changing as I'm editing, but I think it will land somewhere around 90,000. It's dual timeline so I have created a nightmare for myself in terms of keeping track of the plot 😩

How about you - genre/word count? How far have you got?

Be interested to know other people's genres too. I originally thought mine was literary fiction - but apparantly not!!

BecauseOfIndia · 18/10/2022 12:44

@EmmaH2022 To be fair I wrote my originally during the covid lockdowns, I would never have done it otherwise, despiite it being a lifelong dream. I'm self employed and my business involved foreign travel so I got government grants to cover me as I couldn't trade.

I'm not considering self publishing just yet, I've only submitted it to 11 agents - one of which took it right to end of nearly signing me. I also made the rooky mistake of sending it to the first 6 agents when it really wasn't ready, so I almost don't count them. I'm making it more commercial now - it was a little too philosophical for the genre I think, so hoping to nab an agent this time around.

AppropriateAdult · 18/10/2022 16:35

Hi all. Have been looking for a thread like this to join. I'm currently in the editing stages of my novel - it's the third I've written but none are published so really hoping this will be Lucky No. 3... I submitted the previous ones to agents without getting anywhere, but got a few requests for the full and enough encouraging feedback to keep my motivation alive. In the last couple of years I've had a bit of success with short story competitions and journal publications, so at least I've a bit more of a Writing CV when it comes to submitting this time around. I write literary fiction.

I work part-time and have young kids so it's really hard to get time to write - but I do escape the house for a two-hour writing session every weekend so realistically that's when I get the bulk of my work done.

britneyisfree · 18/10/2022 17:43

I'm how's it going for everyone today?

I'd planned to go hardcore this week before half term but DD has come home with conjunctivitis

EmmaH2022 · 18/10/2022 18:06

Welcome one, welcome all!

I am still chuffed I did my half hour this morning. It was a good way to start the day. Tomorrow I've got to travel about 3- 4 hours round trip for a meeting, so if I don't get something done in the morning, it won't be done, I'll be pooped when I get home.

Pressure!! Seriously, it's so nice to have a group. Someone please shout at me if I don't check in to say I have written!

Appropriate all the time management stuff I have read recommends chunks of time for project work. Eventually, I am looking to do that, but I want to get in a daily habit first - partly because I'm capable of wasting so much time!

has anyone ever been on a writing retreat - even just a weekend? Seems very expensive but also might be really rewarding?

I don't go on holiday or spend money on travel so it's a bit of a leap for me in a lot of ways.

It's my dream to someday be able to go on a week-long (or month-long!) writer's retreat, Emma! The idea of having whole days to write in some idyllic setting just seems like bliss. Not really a runner at the moment with a breastfeeding toddler at home, but someday...

I've been skiving off writing by researching agents - I have a master spreadsheet from the last time I submitted, but that was three years ago and they move around a lot! Trying to hone it down to about ten of the most likely ones for my first round of submissions.

EmmaH2022 · 19/10/2022 09:48

Hello!

I have been awake all night coughing. Had to reschedule that meeting but think no writing for me, just bed. Got a fever as well. Ugh.

hopefully you will all have a chance to write! Hoping to get some sleep but no doubt will be on MN to alleviate boredom!

Cross post

oh, that's task in itself isn't it. I'd consider that progress though, there's a lot of admin associated with all this.

I balk at the money for writing retreats but I looked at one yesterday and it's probably bog standard money for a hotel stay etc etc, but I'm not used to it.
