First ever response from an agent is a manuscript request!

I've been on here asking a few questions about agents recently, and sent my recently finished novel to ten agents about two/three weeks ago.
There was complete silence since then but I've just received my first reply and it's a manuscript request!
Sorry, just wanted to tell some people who understand that this is exciting! (I also realise that the chances of being signed are v low!)

Not low at all, in my opinion. The only submissions who were contacted at the agency I worked for were the ones with a very high likelihood of being picked up.
Well done and GOOD LUCK, I really hope it works out!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 02/06/2020 14:35

Thanks so much. (I hope I don't use the word 'recently' in my book as often as I did in my post.)

Well done, that is massive! Even getting a request for a full is a huge achievement

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 02/06/2020 18:28

Thank you. I wonder how many they read and then decide against? I've seen on here it happens a fair bit.

Well done!

MrsFionaCharming · 02/06/2020 19:19

Wow! Well done!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 05/06/2020 12:02

Although now I've received my first rejection too. :(

Rejections are so hard but everyone gets them. When I got them I just reminded myself that JK Rowling got loads! You just need to remember that not all people like to read the same things and that includes agents and publishers. So it might not be right for them, but be right for someone else. My book was rejected by agents but then picked up by another agent who offered me representation.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 05/06/2020 12:56

Thanks Louisa. Are you on your way to getting published now?

OP posts:
LouisaMayAlcott · 05/06/2020 13:30

Yes rabbit, my debut will be published by one of the 'big 5' this August. But it's not the first book I wrote and I do plenty of rejections from agents before I was signed to mine!

3rdNamechange · 05/06/2020 13:31

How exciting , huge achievement.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 05/06/2020 13:48

That's brilliant Louisa, how exciting!

Thank you! It took me 4 years of serious writing to get there so it's worth listening to critique and ploughing on till you get there.

Zilla1 · 05/06/2020 17:12

Congratulations, Louisamay, I hope your launch is successful. Have your begun work or finished your next novel or sequel?

TrafalgarSquare · 05/06/2020 18:34

Check #askagent on twitter - they had some stats on there this Wednesday. Something like 1000s of submissions, 100s of full requests, 10 clients.

LouisaMayAlcott · 05/06/2020 20:04

Thank you Zilla. Yes I'm now ploughing on writing the next book. It hasn't got any easier!

My agent was asked in an 'ask the agent' session and she said she has thousands of submissions a year and takes on about 2 or 3 people. But someone has to be the person who is signed up!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 05/06/2020 21:22

Ohhh God, those odds are not good at all. :((

OP posts:
LouisaMayAlcott · 05/06/2020 21:50

But rabbit people do get signed up every month so this summer it will be your turn!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 06/06/2020 10:37

Aw thanks. I'll let you know if I ever hear back from them again.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 08/06/2020 11:30

Oh my gosh, after a particularly harsh rejection last night, I now have THREE full requests!

OP posts:
CaptainBrickbeard · 08/06/2020 11:39

Congratulations! My first (and only!) response from an agent was a full request as well and I signed with her shortly afterwards. It’s very exciting - and the fact you have multiple full requests is so very promising! My debut is out next year, also with a big 5 publisher - I got a two book deal. There will always be rejections along the way - when my book went out on submission in the U.K. I think about five of the editors passed but it went to eight acquisition meetings, an auction date was set and we got two pre-empts the week before the auction so whilst no book will be for everyone, it’s no reflection on how successful you might be - multiple full requests is brilliant and I wish you so much luck!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 08/06/2020 11:40

One (top)agency who I've had nothing to do with randomly messaged me on Twitter asking for it!

OP posts:
blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 08/06/2020 11:42

Wow Captain, that's fantastic!

OP posts:
LouisaMayAlcott · 08/06/2020 11:51

Wow rabbit that is brilliant you're definitely on your way!
And you too Captain that is fantastic especially getting an auction 😁

BitOfFun · 08/06/2020 11:55

Very positive news!
