Who is in?

I have my novel planned out, the whole thing is in my head, I just need to get it down. I have so many other WIP, I need to really work at this novel. I have no excuse other than my own self sabotage Sad

How much does everyone aim to write per day? I'm thinking 2000 words. Gulp.

Yes! Post in chat/AIBU

It's getting closer and closer ooooooooohhhh🤗

cathyandclare · 22/10/2018 14:00

Well done for facing the AIBU vipers @BrightLightsandSound

Here's a clicky link to the new thread.

I await a torrent of abuse because NaNoWriMo is a waste of time/project for no-hopers/sign that we're neglecting our families Grin

BiglyBadgers · 22/10/2018 21:32

I'm confused! Are we still using this thread or has it moved to aibu...I can't cope with all these different place...waahhh!! Shock

idlenook · 23/10/2018 04:17

No it hasn't moved bigly - sorry for any confusion! The purpose of posting in chat (or Aibu as above) was to direct other posters to this thread who might not know about the creative writing board. I haven't actually posted in chat yet as i ended up feeling poorly again yesterday (have plague apparently, as does toddler DD). This should still be the mothership!

BrightLightsAndSound · 23/10/2018 16:31

Urgh. I mentioned earlier I had been entering some flash fiction comps as practice before 1 November - getting rejections left right and centre Sad

BiglyBadgers · 24/10/2018 20:15

Phew, thanks idlenook. I'm easily confused. Blush

Competitions can be depressing like that Bright. I entered some poetry ones and got nothing, which was hardly a surprise but still a bit of a downer. Such is the life of a writer.

Hellomatey001 · 24/10/2018 21:52

Oh Gawd. I once posted on AIBU.

Never again . Shock

idlenook · 25/10/2018 08:10

BrightLightsAndSound I know it must be dispiriting but at least you're achieving the main goal, which is to get as much practice in before Nano starts Flowers

Hellomatey I was directed to mumsnet by my midwife when pregnant with DS six years ago -- posted in AIBU about a minor, pregnancy related squabble between me and very lovely DH and he was torn to shreds! He saw the funny side but I've avoided it since then!

DD is in nursery this morning so I have 4 glorious hours once DS is at school in which to plan and write with wild abandon. Happy days Grin

Hellomatey001 · 25/10/2018 22:36

Idlenook,

I can imagine, it is vicious. Did you get any LTBs?

I posted once asking what to do if a child hits your baby, after I had an encounter with my 5 month old and a small child in a waiting room. There I was, expecting tips and reassurance and above all understanding, me being an anxious mum after all. Boy was I wrong! I was slaughtered. Literally killed. People saying I was going ott/mental/crazy/needed to get a grip. It was so extreme, it was actually funny. Strange thing is when I discussed my question with a new mum face to face, I got nothing but kindness and helpful advice. So my complete sympathy!

spookyspookyspookhole · 26/10/2018 19:39

So...shall we try in chat

cathyandclare · 28/10/2018 16:43

I went to the launch event in York today. I'm trying every trick to make myself accountable!

BiglyBadgers · 28/10/2018 18:19

I'm starting to get really quite excited. I'm even having the sudden urge to handwrite the whole thing with some of you other handwriters. Usually I am a typer and write on my tablet, but I've moved to handwriting my journal recently and sort of just fancy getting away from the screen. I think it might be a different writing experience as well.

Of course it would mean having to buy a new notebook and pen...or two...or three...WinkGrin

idlenook · 30/10/2018 09:04

BiglyBadgers I made DH drive me to the nearest Paperchase when I was feeling deathly ill with plague last week for the sole purpose of buying an extortionately priced writing notebook that I just know I won't be able to bring myself to actually write in.

Am a bit stuck at present as I've realised while bedridden by above illness that the post-Arthurian fantasy I have planned is actually part of a much longer project in my head that I'm really not ready to start writing (I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else, but I have a percolation process with stories, they need time to form and become real in my head before I can start writing)... so now I have a day to go and no novel.

Well, that's not entirely true. The last thing I wrote, quite a few years ago now, was a piece of very obscure fanfiction which I never finished because I felt guilty about writing fanfiction, even though I loved it. While going through my archives in a panic a few days ago I revisited my fanfiction.net profile and it's accumulated quite a few reviews in my absence, so now I feel even guiltier as some of them are quite lovely and people have taken the time to actually read it...

So I'm leaning toward that while I give post-Arthurian fantasy a bit of breathing room. It needs a complete rewrite and my plan was just to start doing that by hand without referring to the original. That's within the rules, right?

Blush
idlenook · 30/10/2018 09:05

Sorry for the essay!!

BiglyBadgers · 30/10/2018 09:59

I know what you mean about having to let things ferment in your head for a while. The one I'm doing it something I made a start on a while ago and then realised it just wasn't working and I needed to go away and let it settle for a while. I'm been writing loads of backstories in the mean time and letting it swoosh about and I'm now ready I think...I hope...

I think fanfic is really underappreciated. I know a few people who write it and it just seems really hard to me. Having to write your own work within the bounds of someone else's world and characters is a real skill. I don't know why some people get all snobby about it. As far as the files go I think it's pretty relaxed these days and perfectly fine to continue pieces or rewrite or whatever, so I say go for it! Do tell us what the source material is though. I always love to know. Smile

BiglyBadgers · 30/10/2018 10:00

Files? I meant rules....my typing is a mess.

toolazytothinkofausername · 30/10/2018 10:08

I'm in :)

cathyandclare · 30/10/2018 11:36

What are you aiming for, 1,666 a day or more of a go-with-the-flow approach?

I need a hard and fast deadline. If I just say 50, 000 by the end of the month, there's a risk I'll be burning the midnight oil on the 30th. So my rule is that I must do 12,000 a week, with a targeted 2000 a day to allow for one day reviewing/reading/chilling.

bringincrazyback · 30/10/2018 11:41

I'm in. I have a manuscript on the go which I'm fairly obsessed with atm, and I'm dying to get a first draft completed. I'm a fiction editor by profession, which is really slowing my writing down as I can't seem to get past the urge to perfect everything as I go along! Grin I really need some motivation to just get my head down and write, get the whole thing out there in some shape or form, and come back to editing later.

BiglyBadgers · 30/10/2018 13:18

I like to aim for the 1666 per day, but I'm hoping to get a got chunk done on the 1st and 2nd to give me a bit of a buffer. I know last year I had days where I wrote loads and others with just a couple of hundred words, but then I did it on my tablet. This year writing by hand I think I'm going to have to pace myself more so I don't end up with a wrist injury WinkGrin

That does sound really tough bring. How do you turn of your editor brain?

cathyandclare · 30/10/2018 13:22

Bring -at least your inner editor knows what they're talking about. I'm quick to delete and I've never edited anything professionally in my life!

darkriver198868 · 30/10/2018 15:19

Hi
I am feeling a little crazy but, I am in. I have no plan and no idea. However, I an inkling about what I want to write.
I tried last year and failed.

Hellomatey001 · 30/10/2018 22:00

What device are you guys writing on?

I am looking for a good device for my writing myself.

cathyandclare · 31/10/2018 09:17

I'm just using a laptop with Word and longhand and a pad at times too.
I tried Scrivener once but I spent too much time fiddling with the app.
