Hello

Is anyone doing NaNoWriMo this year?
I'm going to start it at least & hopefully finish it. I've got characters swirling around in my head at the moment & some glimpse of a possible plot...

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 05/11/2012 23:20

I'm still feeling a bit smug, at 15000 words. We've got guesta coming next week though, so will be taking a few days off.

BustyDeLaGhetto · 05/11/2012 23:52

Horrible writing tonight. Easily distracted from it and dissatisfied when finished. Felt like sealing my computer in a box and kicking it off the cliff.

Wilding · 06/11/2012 03:25

Busty, I know the feeling! I have loads of free time at the moment so should be writing loads to make up for later in the month when I won't be able to get anything done, but I'm seeking out distractions all over the place (why, hello, Mumsnet).

I like the idea of posting on FB, Englsemama - accountability is good! I'm on 3,850 so far - pathetic! (plus 7,000 from last year which I'm not counting...)

Alameda · 06/11/2012 09:01

there's still plenty of time for those of us with about 2000 words between us

isn't there?

FlyingAardvark · 06/11/2012 11:55

I managed to do about 1600 yesterday but struggled along, just going through a bit of the story I want to get right but nothing great was coming to me.

When I'm struggling I fall into a pattern of letting my characters talk about any old shit until I get some inspiration. So half of yesterdays word count is probably my characters talking about their favoruite holiday destination or some other pointless drivel. So those that are worried their word counts are low, they probably have a lot more useful content in them than mine. Just keep going get into the habit of writing everyday, even if you don't make 50000, you still have something to work with.

I should get a bit more time to write tonight if I get my studying done first, so hopefully can get the scene I'm doing finished.

madwomanintheattic · 06/11/2012 14:10

Playing catch up today! What should I be up to now, working on the daily count thingy? I don't know if I can face the nano site... Will try an upload later.

Penelope1980 · 06/11/2012 19:04

Flying I like to think those sorts of conversations are good to get to know your charachters, that's what I tell myself anyway!

I am worried my characters don't have strong enough personalities. I wonder if I ought to make some of them a little less likeable so they can undergo more of a change when the tough times hit.

Had a day off writing and feel much better for it. I recommend it. It was starting to feel like a chore but am motivated again!

Alameda · 06/11/2012 19:36

I think it should be about 10000 words now madwoman

would be nearly there if I didn't compulsively delete everything within minutes

death by creative writing all over again :(

madwomanintheattic · 06/11/2012 21:26

Ah, compulsive deletion. I do recognize a small tendency to do a word count, and then, er, tweak a few things... Thanks alameda, that's what I figured. Not quite there but catching up valiantly.

GrendelsMum · 06/11/2012 21:27

Logging in to say I'm still on track, thanks to some ruthless jumping ahead in the plot to 'when stuff happens'.

Penelope1980 · 07/11/2012 08:28

am slipping behind! Anyone else? Am starting to wonder if it will be better to aim for 30,000 words instead. Is that sacrilege to say? Grin

Alameda · 07/11/2012 11:54

Mass deletion, retrieved, deleted, retrieved, chopped it up and spread it around but still barely 1800 words. WHY AM I SO RUBBISH AT EVERYTHING etc anyone can write.

Wilding · 07/11/2012 13:00

I'm behind! Stuck on a scene and haven't written anything for two days. Gah.

Not too bad on the deleting front, though - tbh I find the crucial thing is just not to re-read or delete AT ALL. That's what the rest of the year is for! I know if I read mine over I'll find loads I want to change, so I just keep plugging away even though bits of it are total shite. Only up to about 3,800 Blush

madwomanintheattic · 07/11/2012 14:10

Haven't done a word count for two days as I need to get in three hours today Grin. I know I'm behind, but I expected to be at this point due to slow start.

GrendelsMum · 07/11/2012 19:31

Don't delete! Don't re-read, even.

The point is to write, not read. Sure, some of it will be awful, especially at this point when you're only just flexing your writing muscles. But some of it will be the beginning of something good...

Don't forget - if you're on target, tomorrow completes the first quarter of your novel!

Engelsemama · 07/11/2012 21:45

No writing for 2 days - work has got in the way. will jump back on tomorrow evening.

castlelough · 07/11/2012 23:38

Hmmm no writing since Sunday. Will hopefully get a bit done tomorrow night. Good luck everyone!

TunipTheHollowVegemalLantern · 08/11/2012 11:41

Hello, may I be a late joiner?

I wasn't going to do it because I would rather write a little bit slower than 50k in a month and I thought I was far too marvellous and self-motivated to need any external help but I am in desperate need of a MASSIVE kick up the arse because I had this Monday down as the day when I would stop doing the initial research of my historical novel and start really writing the fucker, but I have done sod all this week despite having quite a lot of child-free hours.

So I'm starting today and have done 350ish words using Write Or Die. Hopefully I'll gather speed.
I'm not necessarily aiming for 50k by the end of the month but if I don't have at least half of that I am a pathetic worm.

Have been totally inspired by seeing everyone post impressive word counts here and on FB btw!

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 08/11/2012 14:16

All are welcome I think tunip. :)

Someone help me. I've been really enjoying writing, but the grimness of my tale is getting to me. I'm in a particularly dark part, and finding it a struggle to write this sad stuff. :(

TunipTheHollowVegemalLantern · 08/11/2012 14:34

Loopy, if you're struggling to write it, do you think there's a danger your readers will struggle to read it? Maybe the fact that you're having trouble is a sign that you're at a point in the plot when some relief is needed? Could you give yourself and your characters a rest with a less harrowing scene before you continue on with the grim trajectory?
Or, alternatively, think about how you will keep them reading through the grim, by maybe inserting hints about excitement to come or mystery to be solved?

ThatBintAgain · 08/11/2012 14:36

I had every intention of doing this but yet again had to admit that I just don't have the time. Next year for sure!

elfycat · 08/11/2012 14:41

Hi, just found this thread. I did look for a NaNo thread on the first but then got distracted by an essay that was due in today.

My word count is looking good, but I suspect that if I were to edit this story later the whole lot would be considered a back story and deleted. Never mind that, I've succeeded in previous years by just typing the next lame conversation that my characters want to have.

But this may be procrastination. Word count for the day 0!

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 08/11/2012 15:35

That's the conclusion I came to Tunip. Thanks :)

FlyingAardvark · 08/11/2012 17:35

Hello to newcomers. This nano thread is a lot busier than last years!

I might push myself to get to 20000 tonight. I'm at 17000 now but working next two or three days. Might be too much for me but I'm trying to get most of my writing done in the first two weeks as will have to concentrate on uni assigment after.

I'm another who doesn't read back or delete, just write, write, write. I leave bits I know I will delete after nnwm and skip scenes if I'm not sure how I want to write them yet. I often find when I'm writing lots of useless dialogue that it'll run into something useful I hadn't thought of before. Once NNWM is finished I will tidy it up into something decent before I even get onto full on editing.

I've written this story in 3rd person from one point of view but have already decided it will be better from multiple POV. At the moment I have stuck with how I started as don't want to confuse myself but that may mean leaving too much to change after, so not sure which way to do it!

Engelsemama · 08/11/2012 18:26

20,000 Aardvark ? Shock You're scaring me!

I've had 2 days of nothing written (work combined with evening commitments).

Jumping back in now at 9700. I am just planning to write, write, write this evening (fr a few hours at least). Tomorrow I have to retrun to reality and get some mroe marking done, but am reserving my child free time (nap time) for writing. Not much on this weekend, so will grab every opportunity to get some words down.

I am in need of more motivation so if anyone wants to buddy me and make me write more then my username is IBelieveInEngels
