Help please.
I plan my tv viewing for the week and record and then watch my chosen programmes. I can also skip the ads.
I have to get a new package as my Virgin media box is very old.
Is there any system available in Ireland where I can still record ?
I know Virgin don’t have a system where I can record as before.
Sky Glass isn’t suitable either.
It seems to be all streaming.
But if I go away for a fortnight and am following a 6 episode series I can’t set the tv to record so I miss the start or the middle or the end of the series.
It’s ridiculous.
And this is progress 🙄

Any suggestions please ?

No help, but be interested in this too!
We have a very old Sky box that is no longer supported, but allows us to record/ series link... I believe the new Sky GLASS (I see you said the correct name, I couldn't remember) is like streaming - but how does that work for BBC, where of you miss a programme then tough*. No access to iPlayer is a pain 😞

*what I mean is if you can't series link the "record" then how can you see all the shows you want to watch? Maybe I'm just don't understand Sky Glass - and it costs a lot more!

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2025 17:14

Sky Q allows you to record a series but you can’t record any of the ITV channels because they have to be tuned in separately. BBC is the NI version which runs to its own schedule - other regional versions can be tuned in but can’t be recorded.

deeahgwitch · 07/08/2025 17:36

Thank you @JaneJeffer
It’s such a pain in the proverbial.
I’m a dinosaur obviously because I like BBC 1 &BBC 2, Channel 4, the odd thing on Virgin One and the two RTEs. I record off them.
I also watch Sky News and BBC News stations.
I don’t want access to seventy billion other stations.
I have access to Netflix too.
Somebody said this came up on Liveline but I must have missed it.

Thanks @JaneJeffer - like @deeahgwitch I'd describe myself as a dinosaur 🦕 😀
My Sky box is at least 10 years old, probably 15. I like my current set up, but know it won't last much longer. As I said Sky no longer support our box and it's starting to get glitchy.
Need to deicide if Sky is worth it or if SaorView will suffice.

deeahgwitch · 07/08/2025 17:47

I don’t think you can record at all on Saor View

Veraveravera · 07/08/2025 17:53

We also have an older sky box and like to record things. We used to have a Humax box which worked like an old video but was on a hard drive. Not sure if they are still made but just connected to tv via hdmi cable I think.

Wexone · 07/08/2025 21:10

you can get sky q and that records stuff. you have to sign a contract but should get a good deal for signing up you only need the basic package. don't need sky stream or glass

ChicScroller · 07/08/2025 21:57

You can buy a box that records and you won’t need a contract Argos sell them one is called Manhattan T4-R 500GB Freeview Play 4K TV recorder

Cowsontheloose · 07/08/2025 22:19

We have sky glass. You can record.as such, it saves the link and you later stream it. Bbc I player, itv x, all 4. Everything else is through sky. Its similar to netflix really. We like it. And we can set upto 10 reminders i think

OP is in Ireland Sky glass wont stream BBC iPlayer or ITVX - Plus you need super fast internet here for it to work

OP - Sky Q is you best option here

This is my concern, thanks @Wexone
I watch a lot of BBC, and record nearly everything.

yeah the fact we can't bbc I player here is very annoying. I record nearly everything on BBC and if it misses one I can't watch it 😪 only sky q will work and make sure you specify that as they will try to get you to go to stream etc. tell them it will not work in your home
I know its expensive- my friends and family can't believe I use it - they are all dodgy boxes and fire sticks- but I love my TV and the comfort of having stuff recorded is there to watch

eggandonion · 08/08/2025 10:09

I have zero concept of how our tv works...we have saorview. But my dh has a vpn so we can use iplayer on his laptop. I think my ds uses a vpn to his telly?
My friends son has a dodgy box. Apparently a huge percentage of the population does? She reckons all the adult kids living with parents do. An interesting topic!

TaTuirseOrm · 08/08/2025 10:18

I know lots of friends and family use dodgy boxes, and/or VPN. My dad spends half his time giving out that his dodgy box doesn't work properly, especially when there is a big match on.

I know I'm in a minority, but I don't want a dodgy box and would much rather pay for a legit, stable service!

Are we going to be forced into Sky Glass / streaming eventually? 😫

JaneJeffer · 08/08/2025 11:28

I thought the main dodgy box man was in the Joy now? Grin

The reason we have Sky is because we watch a lot of sport in this house and you can’t get it elsewhere.

There is a catch up service for the Irish channels, BBC & C4 on there.

Yeah, I think he is 😆 but no doubt the gap has been filled already.

Channel 4 app is pretty good & it's freely available, but I find the catch up service for BBC in Sky is limited in what it offers.

deeahgwitch · 08/08/2025 14:22

Thank you so much for all your replies.
I thought I was the only one who still recorded tv shows to watch later.
I’ve just watched The Agreement Part 1, about the Good Friday Agreement that I recorded back in April.
I watch a lot of Channel 4, BBC 1&2 and RTE.
Virgin Media 1 is almost useless. We get the odd ITV series but often months after the UK.
And then subtitles might not be available.

Its so annoying ait it - i wish sky would do a deal with BBC and ITV to get the catch ups available - like they did with netflix
Similar in our house alot of sport is watched and god forbade i suggest that we reduce that to reduce our bill some how
I cant be dealing with VPN streaming etc and bad internet -If i dont record it i dont get to watch it

turkeyboots · 08/08/2025 14:34

I've had Eir and Vodafone boxes which do the recording, the old way. They seem to be more expensive though.

eggandonion · 08/08/2025 14:53

Mw ds gets Now tv every so often for sports. I don't understand it either!
My boss records things. He tells me about things he has taped. I suspect no tape is involved!

deeahgwitch · 08/08/2025 18:16

Having listened to awful complaints about Eir on Liveline and how they treat their customers I would be afraid to use them.

don't go near them. honestly sky all way Will get a good deal when sign up and then when price goes up ring again and negotiate a new price..its the only one no issues

deeahgwitch · 22/08/2025 14:28

My siblings have dodgy boxes. And they are aptly named as the reception can be dodgy.

OP posts:
Staghead1 · 22/08/2025 16:04

I have sky q, can record everything bbc 1, 2 etc except for itv and channel 5.
If you ring as a new customer wanting a basic package you should get a good deal.
I can't stream, Internet isn't good enough so this works for me.
