Hi Craicnetters!

I was looking for the other thread and see it's fallen way down the list so I decided to make a new one for all our daily musings ☘️

Talk about timing - after peat being discussed here earlier today it was later discussed on Newstalk.

What was said ? On what programme ?

PabloTheGreat · 19/02/2025 14:00

After 13 days without power, they can fuck off, I'm keeping our turf fire. We had a power cut just before Christmas too for 4 days as well. Everyone else back within hours and we were 4 fucking days because we are rural. Every second house around is planning to get a generator.

In time we'll probably phase it out when they finally ban cutting our own turf. But I'm not ever going to rely on grid electricity 100%.

I wasn't paying too much attention to Kieran Cuddihy's show but heard peat being mentioned so tuned in. The bit I heard was about what how what has replaced peat isn't as good but that the benefits for the eco system is worth it.

I like Kieran Cuddihy's late afternoon/ early evening show on Newstalk. I flit between him, RTE1 and Matt Cooper on Today FM

He's the one on Newstalk I like the least, he's only suitable for fluff pieces.

LadyEloise1 · 20/02/2025 08:23

We'll agree to disagree on KC @honeyrider
I like Pat Kenny's show. Still going strong.

honeyrider · 20/02/2025 08:38

The funniest thing I've ever heard on Kieran Cuddihy's show was Ronan Mullan running rings round him and handing him his arse on a plate. KC wasn't able for him and lost his temper.

I'm allergic to RM but he was 100% correct in what he was saying and he showed up how poor an interviewer KC is when it comes to serious stuff.

Pat Kenny is king of the airway.

Isn't KC moving to virgin media to present their political show ? O

halfpasteleven · 20/02/2025 22:02

Ignore the O- it's a typo!

LadyEloise1 · 20/02/2025 22:58

Oh ! 😉
Is he ?

If he is he must have some connections because it's not on ability. Delighted if he's going, now I wonder who will replace him.

Another fatal road accident in Donegal.
May those who died rest in peace.
My heart goes out to those affected.
Why are so many fatal accidents happening in Donegal ?
Sad

JaneJeffer · 01/03/2025 11:34

It so sad @LadyEloise1. A man died in a farm accident the other day as well.

I lived in Donegal for a while and even back then Donegal had a bit of a reputation for ignoring the law. Obviously not all people in Donegal but enough for it to earn that reputation. I don't know if being seen as so far from Dublin and close to the border has any bearing. An awful tragedy anyway, may they RIP. Horrific news for their families.

Horrific news about the 4 young lads in the accident in Donegal, my heart goes out to the families and friends and hopefully the two survivors will make a full recovery. I don't know what it is about Donegal that causes there to be more fatalities on the roads than other counties. We live in a town with quite rural surrounds but thankfully haven't seen as many crashes. My son was out with his pals in one of their cars last evening and I was silently wishing them home safely the whole time. It's a real worry.

And a man in his 50s died in Dublin last night, he was on a motorbike and collided with a car. May he RIP also 💔

eggandonion · 11/03/2025 22:17

I can't believe Patrick Kielty didn't have his wife and sons at his mums funeral. They seemed to spend a lot of time in Co Down with her.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 12/03/2025 14:30

They're quite young though (6 & 8 I think?) so maybe they didn't feel a big Irish funeral would be a good setting for them? I know in my family we have decided to leave younger children with a sitter rather than take them along to a funeral. My kids are teens and thankfully still have grandparents around they are very close and I'd imagine if they'd passed when my kids were younger they would have been so distraught that a funeral might have been too upsetting for them. They know their kids best, so I'd say this decision was made in their best interests.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 12/03/2025 14:31

Also they are quite keen to keep them out of the public eye and I'm sure there were a lot of cameras/press at that funeral so that will have factored in their decision?

I agree with your post and the decision made.
The press would might have been very intrusive.

eggandonion · 12/03/2025 16:29

I remember when my boss's mum died, his kid were about 8 and 5, they were at the funeral and the afters, and he thought their presence helped everyone. I wasn't at my aunt's funeral when I was 10, I think that was a wrong decision. She was my godmother, who took me for afternoon tea and the pantomime. And I should have been there for her.

How is that being allowed to happen in this day and age ?
Who are the local TDs and why have they not kicked up blue murder ?
It doesn’t make sense.
There are DEIS schools and I heard recently on the radio that there is a pilot programme re “Super” DEIS schools.
So the money is available
Is there more to the story ?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 17/03/2025 16:42

I agree it's an odd one, a lot of schools do really struggle but there are emergency funds there if needed. It sounds like it might be a management (of lack of) issue? I would imagine funds will be issued at the 11th hour, there's no way children could be expected to learn remotely - it was bad enough in Covid times but at least everyone was home due to lockdown, now we'd have parents out at work so how could children be left at home alone to be homeschooled??

MarieDeGournay · 20/03/2025 14:56

A change of topic to a tv ad!

Has anyone seen the Concern ad with the three oul' lads down the pub 'waking' their old pal Dónal, who was so tight he squeaked when he walked, and it's a wonder he didn't show up to his wake for the free drink?

I think it's really reaslly moving, and brilliantly acted - they deserve an award, all three of them.

It's very Irish, in that they're slagging Dónal off something rotten, but you know it's from a place of affection; and it's very stereotypically male, because they mask their feelings with lots of slagging and laughter, and then they just can't hide their sorrow any more, 'Miss ya...'

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's great?
