Anyone inclined to give an opinion? I am leaning towards a yes/no vote, the yes to remove what I see as sexist language in the constitution, the no because the government are so appalling in terms of providing services and rights to disabled citizens and I feel the clause is paternalistic and pushes care on families yet again

Well, at least we can look at the segment on the States and feel somewhat smug 😂

I know!

To be honest, that's a total horror show.

🤣🤣It really is looking like it's going to be Biden vs Trump again. God help America!

Dublincailin · 06/03/2024 23:05

Norma Foley is coming across stronger the than Helen McEntee.

I am not overly bothered by the first referendum the durable relationship thing bothers me but definitely not happy with the care amendment

For the life of me, I cannot understand how they can't scrape together a couple of half decent/compis mentis candidates in a country that size. I admit I am wildly idealistic though, massive fan of the West Wing 😂

She seems more passionate & at least seems to have more belief in what's she attempting to put accross. Helen is dull & unconvincing.

Peader referred to the Supreme Court going through which is only been heard due to Article 42.1, I think

If this goes through the case is lost.

The reality is for some carers this could financially impact them.

You would think there would be loads of young, bright men & women biting at the chomp! On a different note hope poor Michael D. gets out of hospital tomorrow & can cast his vote on Friday

This is why they are rushing this through as this case can & will quite rightly open the floodgates for more similar cases. This must be so stressful for the poor woman who has taken the case.

God yeah, I had forgotten he was in hospital tbh. I'd say he'll be glad to see the back of the áras.

Helen was paint by number, rinse and repeat.

She seemed convinced that the laws would be the best all and end all.

Michael McDowell went through the issue on court ruling that a law was unconstitutional resulting in releasing of men convicted of rape being released. Government had to rush law through to get those men off the streets.

He has lived the reality of the problems arising from law being considered unconstitutional.

Dublincailin · 06/03/2024 23:21

100% @VoteNONO .

I've said it before and I will say it again, this referendum is boiling down to money. This government must have reason to believe the case will be lost opening the financial flood gates.

Don't ministers have lots of people advising them about constitutionality though? Surely she has some idea?

@DanielGault

If America can't find better candidates by Biden and Trump in 340 million people what hope have we with 5 million.

And unfortunately we don't have an opposition which will challenge them. Marylou is always snipping when I tune in to dail tv.

VoteNONO · 06/03/2024 23:25

@DanielGault unfortunately I think Varadkar, O Gorman, McEntee & their cronies consider themselves above the law as they have proven time & time again...

As she said again tonight very curtly "the government make the laws".

@Dublincailin Mary Lou is very conveniently missing in action recently. Sinn Féin have been so quiet. Aontú are putting on a stronger showing of opposition🙈

Dublincailin · 06/03/2024 23:28

They do but they (including MMD has he had published an article on the very issue the he found himself dealing with been unconstitutional)

He still as MOD allowed to go to court and let it play out.

They will do the same.

Dublincailin · 06/03/2024 23:30

If Aontú could get it together, they could very well next year.

Lots of could in there

DanielGault · 06/03/2024 23:31

You can really see why people just give up on voting. Sniping is right. I know we're not the only country to suffer from that but it's so wearing. I might be talking out of my arse but politics seems to have gotten so much worse in the last 10/15 years. Maybe I'm just getting old 😔

Didn't finish,

MMD allowed the Courts rule despite knowing the result instead of changing the legislation before court heard the case.

Court cases can take years not like he didn't have time.

That was the lesson learned, hence rushing this through.

Peadar Toibín is a strong, articulate leader. They could do very well but they are still relatively small. Then again TDs are leaving FG in droves so God only knows how next year will pan out!

No @DanielGault I hear you, I've been politically homeless since 2016.

I still exercise my right to vote ( too many men and women gave their for me to have that right) but usually for independents.
