New series tonight. Everyone ready for a million windows?

OP posts:

I think the man who explains budgets with salt and pepper needs a slot where he explains the financial things. We lived in a house with a bit of knocking down walls...it was filthy.

Ewoklady · 12/01/2025 23:38

I watched it. It turned out really well. Crazy expensive on top of purchase price but it’s so beautiful now and the couple tonight were lovely

the Claremorris renovation last week was one of my favourites!

pontipinemum · 13/01/2025 08:35

Forgot this was back. I must catch up on it.

@eggandonion is that Eoin McGee? I like on the location love it or list it that they do say how much they can put in before it's no longer adding value to the property. Of course if it's your home and you plan on being their a long time it matters less but you should be aware

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2025 08:54

Yes Eoin Mc Gee is the "salt and pepper" man.
That's a great idea for the show @eggandonion and @pontipinemum
You should email in your idea to the production company
Can anyone remember what the couple paid for the house ?
I'm glad they were happy with the house despite it being unfinished upstairs.
She was lovely. And she went for the green counter top !!!
Did anyone notice when she was saying she would hate it she was actually wearing a jacket in a similar green. Smile

I couldn't believe the woman in Claremorris didn't put a gate on her backyard. Shock
No wonder she would be nervous sleeping beside the door !!!

eggandonion · 13/01/2025 09:05

Neighbours often have nasty walls.
I think Eoin McGee is recovering from an accident?
But where do people get the money from?

JaneJeffer · 12/01/2025 22:37

The ending seemed very rushed but it turned out lovely. Wonder how they'll keep it pristine when they're doing the upstairs though?

Yeah, that was my main thought, as we’re looking at phasing some work on our house, and being told that phasing will add substantially to our costs, as obviously things need to be left ‘finished’ after phase one, and then opened up again for phase two, and there’s some re duplication of work.

I thought their marriage was going to break up over the ‘hiding the sink’ issue.

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2025 10:06

The sink wasn’t hidden.
I rewound to double check 😂@HareSalient

DH and I both exclaimed ‘But we can SEE THE SINK!!!’ at the end.

I will admit, I immediately correlated his desire to have a completely ‘hidden’ kitchen to his Englishness — after many years living in various parts of England and then returning home, I don’t see anywhere near the same aspiration towards a completely bare set of work surfaces in Ireland.

We had some very nice neighbours in the last place we lived in England whose kitchen looked as if no one lived there. If you accepted a cup of coffee, the kettle got fished out of a drawer and put away afterwards. Once the DH started making himself toast. The toaster got taken out of a drawer. I was fascinated.

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2025 10:22

I saw on a thread on Mumsnet a light hearted questioning of whether the toaster is kept on the counter top or in a cupboard.
I think it was a Northern Ireland thread.
If kept on the counter top you were most likely Catholic and if kept in a cupboard you were more likely to be Protestant 😂
I was raised Catholic. My toaster is in the press.
But

My father is of Presbyterian / CofE stock.

😂funny the little differences. Our toaster is on the counter. I'd never think to go back to it once it had cooled to put it in a press

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2025 11:36

I think they bought the house for 405,000 in 2019.
So add €315,000.
What house could they get in the Palmerstown area for €700,000 approximately ?

eggandonion · 13/01/2025 11:43

Our toaster sits in a pool of crumbs.
Our kitchen designer, not as posh as it sounds, put a little hinged door above the oven for the microwave.
My friend...we are both CofI...keeps her microwave and toaster in the utility room. I aspire to a utility room.
My daughter has expensive kettle and toaster on display in the kitchen. The microwave lives in the utility room, it wasn't expensive.

I have a cupboard of clutter, with sandwich toaster and blender that I hate and stick blender that's not as good as my previous etc.
I'm going to put post it notes all over the place now.

eggandonion · 13/01/2025 11:45

@LadyEloise Palmerstown seemed lovely when we were lost in it! My Dublin geography is limited, and often involves being lost. I think my other daughter worked thereabouts.

LadyEloise1 · 13/01/2025 11:45

I can't bear crumbs so bought a plastic base the toaster sits on to collect the crumbs @eggandonion
Probably from Lakeland or a catalogue that came in the door.

😂 those post it notes would do my head in. I think I know the difference between pasta and rice without having it signposted!

I'm the only person in the house who ever decrumbs the flipping toaster Angry

I thought that.

same vibe with the Hugh Wallace Bungalow Bliss prog from a few years back. Genuinely thought one man was going to have a heart attack with the stress of working 3 jobs in 2 timelines to find it all.

Followed by Bungalow Blight by Frank Mcdonald.

Prods are right about the effing toaster. If only there was room in the cupboard for it. Sigh

eggandonion · 13/01/2025 13:14

But say I had post it notes, and when I had one tin of spaghetti hoops left I peeled it off, I would have a post it shopping list. Ingenious. Instead I have to wonder about teabags or Fairy liquid.
My daughter...the ex Palmerstown one...knew a family who ran out if teabags. Stuff of nightmares.

Dulra · 13/01/2025 20:50

I have to have two toasters, my daughter is coeliec so needs a separate toaster both are on our worktop! My dh is English I have never seen any of my in laws have toasters in their cupboards but I do remember my granny did and also a tea towel with a picture of the Pope on it draped over the tv 😂

With regards the house I think it was lovely so well styled. I'm always so impressed with how they go from overwhelmed confusion to fabulously finished homes. Upstairs will obviously have to wait.
With regards the price unfortunately that is what these aged houses need for complete retrofits. We bought in 2021 and carried out a renovation it is impossible to buy a turn key house in the area I live they are just so far over our budget. Buying and renovating did work out the more affordable option for us.

Oh and to add our architect worked on room to improve years ago, he's a whole team behind him. She said the reality is nothing like we see on TV.

Magnalux · 13/01/2025 23:21

I was thinking about all the cobwebs that would end up in those exposed ceiling joists!! I hope the poor asthmatic with mould in his room gets his done soon, I actually looked on daft.ie to see what house prices in the area were, and the dearest I could see was €595000. They must just really really love the area and I suppose if they’re never going to move makes sense if they can afford it to have the best house they can. Though with their budget I did wonder why they didn’t just fix their shower upstairs before this.. it’s been 5 years.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 18/01/2025 15:16

I always say I wouldn't let Db near my home because he doesn't listen to personal preferences and he doesn't care about money. But every season it's on and I just have to watch! I'm a few weeks behind on the player now so saw the butcher shop one last night. I absolutely love when people do this. They deserve the grants they get. I do however feel very uncomfortable when someone is talking about their grant and using it to build a sauna or a state of the art indoor gym, and I'm sitting there thinking this is taxpayers money, my money, at least be discreet when discussing it on TV.

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2025 21:35

Oh God this is so sad 😢

It's very stylish...but lots of things for toddlers to whack themselves off!
I hope Orla and the kids have lots of happy days there, stunning area.

Liv999 · 19/01/2025 22:53

I live quite close to this house, very very sad circumstances 😢 poor man lived no length, the house looks amazing though
