We have a fair few kids tbh. It's odd!

LadyEloise1 · 31/10/2023 18:54

I needn't have worried. Smile
We've had a few.

FoFanta · 31/10/2023 18:58

We're cleaned out! LIghts out now and ignoring any more callers. I'm sure one lot hit us up twice!

Abhannmor · 31/10/2023 19:21

I'm not sure how the 🦇 emoji got in. Just happened again. It appeared when I typed Halloween!

What did you do for Halloween when you were kids in Ireland for those of you who are over 50?
We did the sticking your head in a dish of water to try and get an apple with your teeth and hanging an apple from the ceiling using string and trying take a bite of it.
I can't remember if these activities had names.
And the Barn brack of course with contents that health and safety would never allow nowadays!
No trick or treating back then.
Any others?

Abhannmor · 31/10/2023 19:27

Bhí a lán páistí anseo , ar deireadh! Agus a lán báisti ag titim freisin! ☔.

Lean muid ar aghaidh - um Nollaig go luath ....

We used go door to door crying ' any apples or nuts '. One of the lads was Protestant and would go to Belfast and bring back squibs and rockets - which are banned here. There would be a bonfire here and there. My grandad was born on Halloween but he was quite superstitious about it and told people his birthday was November 1st.

We did those, well under 50.

NollaigChridheil · 31/10/2023 19:37

We used to get nuts, coins and mandarin oranges plus penny sweets going around south Dublin

The coins were the best!

ladeluge · 31/10/2023 19:44

We did the apple in the basin and hanging from the ceiling thing. Great fun. Then dressed up as something in a black bin bag and a mad witch hat. When we called to the doors it was NEVER trick or treat, it was always "Help the Hallowee'n party"

My late Dad would put a white sheet over him with two holes for his eyes and came into our room and frightened the Bejaysus out of us two girls. Then he'd come back into the dark room later with a flashlight under his chin which lit up his face very spookily. God the things you remember.

Trick or treat indeed.

VaddaABeetch · 31/10/2023 19:45

We used go around thd doors dtessedup.

Colcannon with a poached egg in the middle.

Braic of course

All the games.

Im 55

Ducking was the basin of water, we used to have apples, monkey nuts and coins which were harder to get.

and hanging an apple from the ceiling using string and trying take a bite of it.
Don't know what this was called and it never worked properly so I don't think we did it as much.

We didn't do trick or treat but older lads used to go round taking down gates and hiding them and that kind of thing.

We'd have witches hats we made at school and false faces which doubled up for the Wren.

We'd have the brack of course!

Chickenkeev · 31/10/2023 20:54

The game where you dipped your head was great craic. But, looking back, a bit mank!
