Hi - how do you feel about references to the Black and Tans, singing Come Out Ye Black and Tans, shouting “yup the RA” in a professional workplace?

Black and Tans i would view as 'history'. Up the RA not acceptable. I'm not sure that's very logical though tbh.

What kind of workplace is this??? It's probably relevant if it's a prison or an accountant's office.

Come to think of it, the Black and Tans shot two unarmed civilians just outside my workplace.

Not acceptable at all. The RA are a terrorist group who killed many innocent people and supported lots of criminality. Only idiots would shout this nonsense.

Completely unacceptable. Where on earth do you work? .

Thanks for the input. It’s not a prison - although it feels like it sometimes!!
Would the presence (or lack of) English people make you feel differently?

I don't think either would be great in front of English people. Although I'd be very surprised if they knew anything about the Black and Tans. But I could be completely underestimating them.

Neither are acceptable in a workplace.

Do you work in The Crown in Cricklewood?

@JaneJeffer the name refers to the subject of this post and not my personal feelings at all.
I’m English and live in Ireland. I feel a bit uncomfortable about a few things at work and trying to figure out if I’m being unreasonable.

Both are completely unacceptable in the workplace (or anywhere else, for that matter).

I’d think they were juvenile dickheads but doing it in front of an English person is extra dickish. I’m sorry this happened to you.

I sat listening unnoticed when my grandparents recounted stories of the B&Ts and they were absolutely horrific. My grandmother’s house was raided when she was a toddler and it was her earliest memory. I was about 5 and supposed to be in bed asleep and their stories were seared into me.

I have absolutely no time for people singing and shouting stupid slogans because most of the time they have zero awareness of what actually went on. And likewise you have to be a bit moronic to be cheering on terrorist groups.

But to get back to your issue - it’s completely unacceptable. YANBU

Talking about what the Black and Tans did is fine. It's part of our shared history.

Shouting terrorist slogans is not acceptable.

What about the song @JaneJeffer - where do you stand on that?

Debatable.

The song itself is fine, it's just a ballad about a time in history. But if someone at work kept singing it I'd be telling them to zip it.

On the building sites in England, it’s a regular occurrence, most English wouldn’t have a clue what you mean by Black and Tans. Overall it’s seen as a bit of craic & remembering history.

What kind of a workplace is this and what was the context?

Yes, I was staring at that and thinking ‘Yup the ‘RA’ sounds completely ridiculous.

OP, I think you need to give more information. What kind of workplace is this, who is doing it, how regularly, and what on earth is the context? Are you saying that Fergal from Accounts floats in and out of your office singing ‘Come Out, Ye Black and Tans’? Are you saying you’re experiencing workplace harassment on the grounds of your nationality?

Or was it some young people chatting about a weekend at electric picnic?
