Hi - how do you feel about references to the Black and Tans, singing Come Out Ye Black and Tans, shouting “yup the RA” in a professional workplace?

OP posts:
Chickenkeev · 14/09/2023 12:49

Black and Tans i would view as 'history'. Up the RA not acceptable. I'm not sure that's very logical though tbh.

TheWrenTheWren · 14/09/2023 12:50

What kind of workplace is this??? It's probably relevant if it's a prison or an accountant's office.

Come to think of it, the Black and Tans shot two unarmed civilians just outside my workplace.

CreationNat1on · 14/09/2023 12:54

Not acceptable at all. The RA are a terrorist group who killed many innocent people and supported lots of criminality. Only idiots would shout this nonsense.

cocksstrideintheevening · 14/09/2023 12:58

Completely unacceptable. Where on earth do you work? .

BATIRA · 14/09/2023 13:00

Thanks for the input. It’s not a prison - although it feels like it sometimes!!

Would the presence (or lack of) English people make you feel differently?

OP posts:
Chickenkeev · 14/09/2023 18:21

I don't think either would be great in front of English people. Although I'd be very surprised if they knew anything about the Black and Tans. But I could be completely underestimating them.

felisha54 · 14/09/2023 18:24

Neither are acceptable in a workplace.

felisha54 · 14/09/2023 18:24

Unless you're a guitar player for the wolftones 🤣

JaneJeffer · 14/09/2023 18:38

Interesting username there.

Do you work in The Crown in Cricklewood?

BATIRA · 14/09/2023 18:49

@JaneJeffer mine?
I don’t understand your post but it’s a new name for this thread : Black And Tan IRA - BATIRA

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 14/09/2023 18:52

I think my post is perfectly clear

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BATIRA · 14/09/2023 21:57

@JaneJeffer the name refers to the subject of this post and not my personal feelings at all.
I’m English and live in Ireland. I feel a bit uncomfortable about a few things at work and trying to figure out if I’m being unreasonable.

OP posts:
Joolsin · 14/09/2023 22:00

Both are completely unacceptable in the workplace (or anywhere else, for that matter).

Nonplusultra · 14/09/2023 22:05

I’d think they were juvenile dickheads but doing it in front of an English person is extra dickish. I’m sorry this happened to you.

I sat listening unnoticed when my grandparents recounted stories of the B&Ts and they were absolutely horrific. My grandmother’s house was raided when she was a toddler and it was her earliest memory. I was about 5 and supposed to be in bed asleep and their stories were seared into me.

I have absolutely no time for people singing and shouting stupid slogans because most of the time they have zero awareness of what actually went on. And likewise you have to be a bit moronic to be cheering on terrorist groups.

But to get back to your issue - it’s completely unacceptable. YANBU

JaneJeffer · 14/09/2023 22:50

Talking about what the Black and Tans did is fine. It's part of our shared history.

Shouting terrorist slogans is not acceptable.

BATIRA · 14/09/2023 23:00

What about the song @JaneJeffer - where do you stand on that?

Debatable.

JaneJeffer · 14/09/2023 23:05

The song itself is fine, it's just a ballad about a time in history. But if someone at work kept singing it I'd be telling them to zip it.

Mirrorimagemenopause · 15/09/2023 20:29

On the building sites in England, it’s a regular occurrence, most English wouldn’t have a clue what you mean by Black and Tans. Overall it’s seen as a bit of craic & remembering history.

StephanieSuperpowers · 16/09/2023 10:35

What kind of a workplace is this and what was the context?

StephanieSuperpowers · 16/09/2023 10:36

Also, I think it's UP, not yup, the RA.

TheDaphne · 16/09/2023 10:49

Yes, I was staring at that and thinking ‘Yup the ‘RA’ sounds completely ridiculous.

OP, I think you need to give more information. What kind of workplace is this, who is doing it, how regularly, and what on earth is the context? Are you saying that Fergal from Accounts floats in and out of your office singing ‘Come Out, Ye Black and Tans’? Are you saying you’re experiencing workplace harassment on the grounds of your nationality?

StephanieSuperpowers · 16/09/2023 11:05

Or was it some young people chatting about a weekend at electric picnic?
