Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

Again, you're out of touch with reality if you think that a lot of people can afford to live in a city in Ireland. There is a huge rental crisis in Dublin. Hundreds of people queue for hours to view a room in Dublin and then it is extremely overpriced.

I live in the Meath, Westmeath, Longford area. I know lots of people who live in villages in these areas..

I know many people who go to work in Dublin.

None of these in the Meath Westmeath Longford area can afford to live in Dublin.

They all do a two hour commute to Dublin to work in the morning. Either by driving, by bus or by train.

The bus is always late in the villages. So people have to go to the bus stop sometimes an hour early to try to get any bus.

Not everyone can live in Dublin. It's not a particularly big county. But it's got a lot of jobs, so people choose to commute. Choices choices choices. Trade offs. It's just part of life.

She said "don't feed me" .
In reply to her comment I used her exact language, I said "don't feed her"

Yet you said that I was wrong. Right.....that makes sense. You are what you want to see

Mooshamoo · 08/10/2023 14:13

Anyway one good thing about ireland is that there are nice walks. I went on a nice walk in a forest trail last weekend.

There are other cities? There are large towns. There are all manner of places.

Instead of telling everyone to move to a city. There are only four cities in ireland. Not everyone can live there..

They should improve the public transport throughout Ireland . And they should improve the amenities in the small towns in irelqnd

Have watched the KerryGold ad with the horse going to France - and I don’t get it?

Can someone point out what I am missing?

You just don't like it here. There really isn't anything anyone can do to help you in that regard. It's your personal opinion, to which you are entitled. It doesn't make it fact though, no matter how much you believe it to be so. And of course services should be improved, nobody would argue with that. But these things take time and money. And a Healy Rae 🤣

Things I like about Ireland - nature. Beautiful walks. Some people.

I've just watched the ad again, @Gloriously and it's very cryptic alright!! 😁

My take on it is that the mysterious/sexy French lady has come over from France to buy the horse and all the menfolk will be fighting over who's going to be escorting the horse (and her!) back over there, out from under the critical eye of the grumpy mammy!! It's a fairly tenuous link to butter, though, isn't it! 😂

Yeah I don't like it here.

I've seen too many cruel things happen in Ireland to like this country.

I just thought of the thing that I like absolute least about ireland.

It is the rape victim blaming mentality in small town Ireland.

I know two girls that were raped in two different small towns.

Both girls were shunned and blamed for their rape. One of the rapists was a GAA star so the girl wasn't believed, even though she was injured..

She had been raped, yet she had to leave the town, to avoid abuse.
She ended up having to leave Ireland.

The Same happened to a girl I know In another town. She was raped, and then shunned and blamed by the town
She attempted suicide.

There is too much cruelty and abuse going on in ireland.

Do you remember that girl that was sexually assualted in Kerry.

And then all of the local men lined up to shake hands with the man who had sexually assaulted her

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2023 14:47

If you want to live in a city there are the five in RI, also Belfast and Derry in the other part of Ireland, and cities in 26 other EU countries. You can choose where you live. You can even live in GB if you think you'd have more fun there. I know you feel responsible for an elderly parent, but if it's making your life miserable it's time to apply for fair deal.

Bad things happen everywhere. Absolutely everywhere. Humans can be awful, regardless of nationality. They can also be utterly amazing. I'm generally a pessimist, but focussing on the negatives ultimately only harms yourself. It's really that simple. It's not easy, by a long shot, but endless negativity is self destructive. You mentioned enjoying walks, where do you like to walk? Forest/beach?

I'm not overly familiar with Meath! Despite living close to it for ages. We are v lucky here in that we are beside a little woods and a beach. So if i was capable of walking, i'd have lots of options!

Londoner with irish parents and we still go to the West whenever we can because we all love it there the scenery the music the people.
When we were travelling as children I remember my dad bringing back poitin in a plastic our lady bottle with a plan that if stopped he could claim it was holy water from knock.
My husband is English and he loves reeling in the years that programme seems to have been on forever.
