Very Irish Things

RocketPanda · 21/07/2023 10:10

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

do you still live in Ireland?

Nothing you have written, rings a bell with me.

@Mooshamoo I read your other thread slating Ireland, if you hate it so much then leave ffs.

Lol what am immature resposne. Can you not hear anything bad said about Ireland? Really, that's so desperately immature.

So if someone says to you that the buses are always late in Ireland , do you tell them to fuck off out of Ireland? An old man complained to me yesterday about waiting for a bus for an hour. I sympathised with him as he was in pain from standing.

You talk like a 12 year old. Try to talk like an adult. Imagine telling people tonleave if they complain about the country they live in. I hear people complaining about Ireland every day.

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2023 13:22

Experiences of living in Ireland differ. It is important for anyone to work out whether they are best suited to rural, or village, or small town, or city, or suburban life. If you feel there's 'nothing to do' you need to work out what you like doing and move to somewhere where those things are available (or start a local club yourself).

She has a whole anti Irish thread already on here. Her hatred for this country does not need to infiltrate every topic on Ireland.

Yes i still live in ireland. Do you live in Ireland. How can you live in ireland and none of those things ring a bell? If you get any bus outside of Dublin, the bus is usually an hour late.

Begrudging is often talked about in Ireland, that people are not happy for each other, and that we are a nation of begrudgers. Google it.

Chickenkeev · 08/10/2023 13:28

@Mooshamoo that is simply not true about busses.

Jesus your post is so arrogant. This thread is titled "very Irish things". Does it say to only write nice things. No it doesn't. It is about people's experiences in ireland.

Do you get to dictate that people only post nice things on here. No you dont. You are one poster. You don't own Mumsnet. The arrogance!

I think that culturally the Irish prize wit, banter and fun as key social attributes and also tend to swerve the dower types just sharing an eye-roll between them.

Anyway back to the craic....

Thats a very nationalistic post.

"We are all great. We must only talk about good things in Ireland".

Even though there are millions of problems in ireland.

No, it's really not. Unless you live in some sort of black hole re busses. Where i am, traffic is woeful but the busses are generally on time. The bus eireann ones are actually often early and park up at the last stop and wait for a few mins before starting the route again.

Go and stand at any bus eireanm bus stop in the villages (not the cities) in Ireland.

Let me know if the bus comes on time. Good luck waiting. They never come on time. They are : minimum 40 minutes late, usually 60 minutes late.

You could say : why can't people just drive. A lot of younger people can't afford to drive. My younger cousins live in villages in Ireland ,they depend on getting the bus to work, it never comes on-time

Again @Chickenkeev your immediate vicinity is not representative of the entire island of Ireland, is it? Do you live in a village or a town for a start.

Many people struggle with the dire public transport systems in Ireland.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 08/10/2023 13:43

I live in a village. The buses all come when they are meant to.

Chickenkeev · 08/10/2023 13:44

I don't say that. I can't drive so i've always lived in places with access to public transport. My inability to drive has restricted me that way but at the end of the day it's my choice. I've limited my own choices.

I don't believe you. I think you're just saying that. As I have never seen a bus come on time in villages. Ever.

I've been reading this thread as a pleasant diversion from problems, and for some light-hearted details of Irish life.

The original post says: "A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland."

  • Irish prize wit.

There is also a lot of alcoholism and abuse in Ireland. Many people I know had an alcoholic abusive father.

I'm realistic. I don't brush all the bad stuff in Ireland under the carpet, and say but hey we are great craic!

There is a lot of abuse and problems in Ireland. I think that a more mature person can admit to that.

A more immature person says: there are no problems at all in Ireland, everything is roses and great craic!!

Chickenkeev · 08/10/2023 13:51

I live in a city. I made the choice to live in cities because i need public transport. Your circumstances are particular to you, and as such are limiting your choices, but your unhappiness does not render the entire country a shithole. It's a great country, which, like every other place under the sun, has its problems, but on the whole, is a good place to live.

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2023 13:54

The buses round here seem to run at the same times every day. I love living in a place where I can interact with nature and where there's lots of historic interest. I also like the gentle pace of life. The local town has a good library with a brilliant access to books in any library nationally, the cinema gets a range of films on date of release, the supermarkets are good and there a lots of clubs and societies. Mooshamoo, you do come across a bit like some of the people being discussed on this thread.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4915128-complaining-about-village-life

You don't have to live somewhere you dislike.

Do you think everyone can choose to live in a city?

Most people can't afford to live in Dublin for a start. I was just chatting to a woman who has to pay 1300 for a small room in Dublin. And she was earning about 1800 a month.

She had to move out of Dublin and commute, to be able to survive.

I love around the Meath Westmeath longford area. No one I know that works in Dublin, can afford to live in Dublin.

I know someone with a good job in Dublin. She commutes from Longford every day. It is a two hour commute to her job in Dublin every day. She can't afford to rent in Dublin..

I think some people are very out of touch with reality if they say "just go and live in a city". People can't afford to live in dublin.

There are other cities? There are large towns. There are all manner of places.

Again, you're out of touch with reality if you think that a lot of people can afford to live in a city in Ireland. There is a huge rental crisis in Dublin. Hundreds of people queue for hours to view a room in Dublin and then it is extremely overpriced.

I live in the Meath, Westmeath, Longford area. I know lots of people who live in villages in these areas..

I know many people who go to work in Dublin.

None of these in the Meath Westmeath Longford area can afford to live in Dublin.

They all do a two hour commute to Dublin to work in the morning. Either by driving, by bus or by train.

The bus is always late in the villages. So people have to go to the bus stop sometimes an hour early to try to get any bus.
