Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

My mother did this yesterday when I was leaving Grin I live 2.5 hours from her.

My Mam does this every time I leave her house and I live 10 minutes away from her 😂

It's been soooo long since that day I can't remember much apart from the head. We did go to some woodland for a picnic too. We had to wear our school uniforms on school trips (skirt, blouse, tie, v necked jumper, and blazer) so we all looked wildly out of place.

We went on a canal boat trip one year somewhere near Maynooth, where we could look through a glass part of the bottom of the canal boat at mud, weeds, and the odd drowned fridge. Mad!

Ah school tours in the 90s 😂 "The odd drowned fridge" 😂

If you went to woods nearby, must have been Beaulieu or Townley Hall?

mathanxiety · 31/07/2023 16:12

It might have been Beaulieu.

(My memory is hazy as this was the late 70s).

ScentlessAprentice · 31/07/2023 16:29

A visit to a shrivelled head and then Beaulieu Woods. You saw all the best of Drawda 😂

MrsPositivity1 · 31/07/2023 19:53

On Highland Radio in Donegal they read out the death notices

The fact they pronounce it Bewley has always fascinated me too!

My mum was irish, - we used to go home in the summer, hours saying goodbye, old men and women with few teeth (distant relatives) giving you money (always notes) - literally remeber being on the ferry aged 9 with a wad of money 😂. Tayto. 4 of us sleeping innthe same bed. Whole holidays spent visiting people. Taking photos all standing solomnly around gravestones of those distant past. Stopping off for a hot toddy. My aunt cooking soda bread. Cousins telling you secrets about people that you eeally shoulsn't know!!

The best was my mum abandoning her english accent though!!! Everyone was an eejit. Jesus, Mary and Joseph frequently called upon whenever anything went wrong. My mum would literally give someone her dinner off her plate!

Weddings, - everyone up singing including the bride and even the oldies still going at 4am.

When i was older and finding out I had a boyfriend - "does he have land"!

Thanks for the thread - happy happy memories

Road frontage!

I've only just realised in the last few years that nonirish visitors might find this insulting, like you're making sure they leave or something.
I was brought up to always leave someone to the door.

They do this on Radio Kerry and Galway Bay FM too

newfloorplease · 01/08/2023 11:21

On KCLR - Kilkenny / Carlow radio too.

inisfree · 04/08/2023 22:50

That will put hairs on your chest!

It's the way they do them on GBFM though. A story about a one legged donkey or something and then serious voice and now, the deaths.

Another thing is going for the messages.

This does not mean that someone is going to the post office to collect any mail. It means going to the shop (either local or supermarket) and getting the bread, milk and other bits and pieces that might be needed.

I was at a funeral this morning in a tiny village in Cork. My friend's Dad passed away. After the funeral, I approached an older lady and asked if there was a toilet at the church. She gave me directions.

As we walked from the church to the graveyard (just up the road), she made a beeline for me and asked me if I had found the toilet ok. I assured her that I had and asked her how she knew the deceased. Turns out she didn't know him at all but her house is just beside the graveyard so she went along to the mass anyway.

I explained that I'd had a long drive to the church and she invited me into her house for a cup of tea afterwards Grin. I declined but was highly amused at the encounter. After the burial, we said our goodbyes and both agreed that it was lovely to meet the other. Only in Ireland would someone (a) attend a stranger's funeral and (b) invite a stranger in for a cup of tea. I'm sure I'll never meet her again but I'll always remember that kind Cork lady.

JaneJeffer · 17/09/2023 16:24

Very kind of her @Taytocrisps it's nice to know this type of thing still goes on.

Abhannmor · 18/09/2023 12:00

I once went out for a cycle ride and passed an middle aged Africa lady standing at the local bus stop. She looked very sad and worried.

About an hour later I returned and she was still there - except she was sitting down outside an elderly woman's house having a cup of tea. The bus having failed to arrive. But at least someone showed her some kindness.

Mooshamoo · 25/09/2023 21:30

People telling you in great detail about deaths. About people you don't know.

"Do you know any Dunnes? Do you know Sarah dunne? Was she in your year in school? "

'No there was a Mary dunne in my year. "

"Well Sarah Dunnes father just died."

Mooshamoo · 25/09/2023 22:21

My mam tells me about the most obscure people who died.

She will say .

Do you remember the Flynn's that used to own that sweet shop down the road from the school when you were in school.

Me eh yeah? That was about 20 years ago.

Her "was John Flynn the son in your year in school".

Me : no I think he was about two years ahead of me. I never spoke to him.

Mum: well his cousin just died.

Someone I have never met

LadyWiddiothethird · 26/09/2023 00:34

The clocks in our house were always an hour ahead,so that we wouldn’t be late for mass.

Mad.

Louise303 · 26/09/2023 00:51

Wow mass was a big deal especially in the smaller villages my hubby told me many a story. There was only 30 people in his school and the priest used to come in on Monday and ask them questions about his sermon on Monday.
