Terrible tragedy in Creeslough, Co. Donegal

The death toll just keeps rising. When I went to bed last night 3 bodies had been found in the rubble of this explosion.

This morning, it had risen to 7 and by lunchtime the total is now 9.

It's such a sad day. The village only had 400 people living in it and it sounds like the kind of place that everyone knows everyone and this will be such a tragic loss to their village.

A further 8 people were brought to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

It's just so desperately sad. My thoughts go out to everyone in the area that has been working on the search & recovery (that cannot be an easy job) and to those who were injured and ultimately to those who have tragically lost their lives in the past 24 hours.

If someone else has posted on this subject, please don't feel you have to keep this thread.

It's just heartbreaking

Abhannmor · 08/10/2022 14:12

I hope someone organises a crowd funder. They're going to need help now.

Awful awful news. Hoping the community is really supported through this tragedy.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 08/10/2022 14:21

It’s tragic. Letterkenny hospital is so small as well.

PlasticSheetingRTÉNews · 08/10/2022 14:25

Just awful. I got a lump in my throat reading that the NI Fire and Rescue Service deployed support.

BustingClouds · 08/10/2022 14:30

It's horrific 💔 I can't stop thinking about the poor people involved, the parents desperately waiting for news of their children. Your worst nightmare.

rageapplied · 08/10/2022 14:46

It's awful. Thoughts are with all those affected.

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 08/10/2022 14:48

Awful - in such a small community so many people will be affected. Thinking of the families and emergency workers.

MichelleScarn · 08/10/2022 15:23

I am so desperately sad to read this, an absolute tragedy. Thinking of all affected.

J0y · 08/10/2022 15:35

Awful, so heartening to hear support came from over the border. Death toll ten now

DramaAlpaca · 08/10/2022 15:39

It's just devastating. For that to happen in such a tiny, close knit community is such a tragedy.

It's desperate sad altogether, RIP to all those who've lost their lives (last I read was up to 10, but Indo said they're not expecting any more).
Condolences to the friends and families affected.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.

This piece about the NI fire service rushing to support gave me goose pimples, it's so heartening to see the island coming together in a time of need.

Yes, I was wondering if there will be a fundraiser. I'd be happy to contribute. I'm sure everyone feels so helpless and it's a practical way we could reach out and help.

Same here @PlasticSheetingRTÉNews . I was very moved that so many people and services (from both sides of the border) were involved in the rescue.

Go fund me has more than doubled its target already. I;d say there is a lot more to come.

The latest news report says that the dead included a young child and two teenagers. Apparently a man (the Dad or Grandad?) and a young child had gone into the shop to buy sweets after school. They also said on the lunchtime news that one man had simply stopped off at the ATM to take out some cash. So random.

This must be tortuous, @TheSproutOfWrath.

I hope you get good news soon.

MichelleScarn · 08/10/2022 16:29

Oh @TheSproutOfWrath thinking of you.

rageapplied · 08/10/2022 16:38

@TheSproutOfWrath I hope you hear soon.

Its just awful. I was glued to the twitter feed yesterday as more instant the news.

Myself and my family were just willing people to be alive in that rubble. Its devastating for the village and Donegal and anyone with connections to the area. It was lovely to see the tractors out and crews from NI helping . Even hearing helicopters landing with the injured to the phoenix park was chilling. Its so upsetting..I cried reading the message from creeslough community childcare offering urgent childcare to people. I thought the gardai great at the press conference. Its so shocking.
Go fund me - where will the funds go ???- maybe counselling for families and locality. That would be helpful .

Sickened by Ryan Tubridy. Bouncing out to front the late late . Letting us know the line- up a comedian etc and luke o neill on guitar and not one word about Donegal all the while at the same time people are trapped under rubble ! Is he for real?? Being lambasted on twitter and then later had a link to an rte news update. The worse tragedy to hit these shores in years - innocent people and he ignores it !! As for josepha Madigan words fail me !!! The whole of ireland us in shock at this tragedy. God help the families

Taytocrisps · 08/10/2022 17:33

A fund will help with funeral expenses - you can't assume that everyone has life insurance. It may also help with medical treatment (we all know how long the public waiting lists are) and counselling. Perhaps a memorial in the village.

Don't be so silly. He mentioned the tragedy at the outset.

Of course the show had to go on as planned - what else could they do? Making every guest mention it, with nothing to say really at that point, would have been crass & pointless.

RTÉ had a special edition of Morning Ireland at 8, a sizeable part of Brendan O'Connor's show given over to the topic, and all the lunchtime news.
