Terrible tragedy in Creeslough, Co. Donegal

The death toll just keeps rising. When I went to bed last night 3 bodies had been found in the rubble of this explosion.

This morning, it had risen to 7 and by lunchtime the total is now 9.

It's such a sad day. The village only had 400 people living in it and it sounds like the kind of place that everyone knows everyone and this will be such a tragic loss to their village.

A further 8 people were brought to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

It's just so desperately sad. My thoughts go out to everyone in the area that has been working on the search & recovery (that cannot be an easy job) and to those who were injured and ultimately to those who have tragically lost their lives in the past 24 hours.

If someone else has posted on this subject, please don't feel you have to keep this thread.

Myself and my family were just willing people to be alive in that rubble.

All of the survivors are rescued, and the Gardaí have confirmed they are not anticipating any more casualties. This was at 230 so Sprout I hope you've heard from your DH's cousin now. 🙏🏻

Itstime1 · 08/10/2022 17:57

It’s horrible. My DH grew up just outside Letterkenny and knows it all very well. Completely shook when he found out. So devastating x

My heart breaks for the lives lost and all who are impacted by this tragedy. I'm also disgusted by the fact that the other thread was deleted. If this had happened in England, Scotland or Wales it would have been trending nonstop.

Why was it deleted? What was the deletion message?

Absolutely tragic.Sad
May those who are injured recover quickly, those who have lost loved ones be given the strength to bear it and those who have died rest in peace.
@TheSproutOfWrath I hope your dh's cousin has been located.
Others have posted on the Craicnet Covid thread ( it has developed into a kind of general Irish current affairs thread ).

TheSproutOfWrath · 08/10/2022 19:17

We've not heard yet but my SIL says that he may be on holiday which is why he's not answering his phone. 🤞
Thank you everyone.
It's a bit surreal seeing something like this on the news being so personal.

MichelleScarn · 08/10/2022 19:49

Crossing everything for you all @TheSproutOfWrath hope you hear positive news soon.

Celia24 · 08/10/2022 19:53

My family is from Creeslough, still have family living there.

It is a tiny place. Everyone will be affected.

HilarysMantelpiece · 08/10/2022 20:01

Ah, God love them all in Creeslough... given the time of day, I was thinking that there were bound to be people on their way home from the school run, stopping off at the petrol station for a little Friday treat.
Such a tragedy, and an awful accident going on the accounts.

My sympathies to anyone involved, hurt, bereaved, injured, witnesses.

TheSproutOfWrath · 08/10/2022 16:09

My husbands family live behimd the petrol station. We are waiting to hear from his cousin.

Oh my god - I can't imagine the anxiety in waiting to hear any news. I hope they hear soon.

@Celia24 - I hope your family is alright.

It's such a terrible accident and when I was reading that the emergency services asked for everyone to be silent so they could try to hear for any survivors, I thought that must have been so eerie (but necessary). My thoughts are still with everyone affected.

Oh Sprout. I am so very sorry.

Holding you and your family in my heart. LadyEloise too, and all the folk of Creeslough.

IsAinmDummm · 09/10/2022 16:15

Thinking of you and all the families affected by this tragedy @TheSproutOfWrath - such an awful sad thing to happen. I read the article on The Journal about all the victims with tears in my eyes, it's heartbreaking 💔

LadyEloise1 · 09/10/2022 17:15

@PerkingFaintly
How kind of you.
Just to clarify - it is a friend of a friend whose cousin, sadly has died. I don't know them personally.
So so sad.
The fickle finger of fate. Sad

BustingClouds · 09/10/2022 17:38

I'm so very sorry to hear of your losses @TheSproutOfWrath. May they RIP together forever. Just heartbreaking x

DandyMandy · 09/10/2022 18:34

I think it's shocking how there has been no talk about how to help the people of Donegal. If it was anyone else they would be acknowledged, but no one is offering financial or practical help to this devastated community. I love how Ireland has come together. We help everyone else yet no other country or group of people help us. We need to continue putting ourselves first and bringing our beautiful and unique country together.
