This really has me so so angry. I just don't understand the sentencing. Is it just me?

The violence against women in Ireland is shocking. I only feel my eyes have been opened to it after living abroad for many years. These stories are constant.

Ughmaybenot · 21/09/2021 20:09

This is utterly appalling. That poor girl, to be considered to be worth so fucking little, by the vile creatures that attacked her initially and then by the law and court system. Heartbreaking.

LadyEloise1 · 21/09/2021 20:41

Please please if you can get on to your local female politicians and express your disgust.
Things have to change and if each of us ( and our friends and relations ) show our outrage it could make a difference.
Every little helps.......

A related topic … www.newstalk.com/news/nearly-9-in-10-women-feel-uncomfortable-walking-alone-after-dark-newstalk-survey-1253857

Sadly that’s been my personal experience too.

I’ll email my local politicians as suggested.

I saw the headline in the papers this evening but didn't know the background. Absolutely shocking but again this doesn't surprise me. A friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver driving on wrong side of the road on the N7 in 2010. Drunk driver had they said 10 pints and was high on drugs but judge couldn't understand what happened as he was of good behavior and gave a suspended sentence of 5 years! Beyond ridiculous the sentences in this country.
Poor girl, hope she gets the help she needs hod love her.

mishmased · 22/09/2021 01:33

@Wexicans can the DPP not appeal the sentences?

SheldonesqueTheLazyEyedBstard · 22/09/2021 01:49

The sentencing is a disgrace.

And those who stood by and watched are just as guilty.

They don’t deserve freedom.

JustLikeSugar · 22/09/2021 06:56

I can’t understand the sentence for the older brother either. A participant in gang r*ape, let it happen, and then second in…only six years!!

@AnotherFruitcake, Dark Chapter is very very good indeed. It’s especially interesting to read from the two perspectives. You can also tell Winnie Li has an insight on Irish life, she was a student at UCC. She is a great speaker, and active on Twitter….well worth following.

The sentence appeal process is outlined here. It does happen, but is fairly rare in Ireland. www.dppireland.ie/criminal-justice-system/sentencing-appeals/

This is more complicated in the event of a guilty plea. We don’t know what has been discussed behind the scenes.

Ireland has a reputation for lax sentencing for rape. A few years back the average was 5/6 years. This is very much in line.

This is very much in line … sadly …

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/09/2021 07:13

My initial thought was At least its Prison.

Seems my expectations are that low these days.

BasedInDublin · 22/09/2021 08:09

That same day there was another case in the newspapers in relation to an 18 month sentence for a woman convicted of social security fraud for 60 or 70K (can't remember the exact amount).

That's between 3 and 4 times the length versus the Wexford case. While both are serious crimes, given the seriousness of the assault, this is not justice. The victim and her family, after going through all they have, must be dismayed.

Plumtree391 · 22/09/2021 08:54

That is dreadful! What an ordeal that poor girl went through.

20Past3 · 22/09/2021 16:59

This article is worth a read...and more so the comments...

www.thejournal.ie/readme/caroline-west-on-consent-and-sexual-assault-5555020-Sep2021/

Sadly the comments outline the challenges that women face in Ireland (and other countries).

@AnyFucker, no I don't live locally anymore, but I'm from the area, and family/friends. My username is an in-joke, since I have some other RL friends on this forum.

As if often the case, locals (at least in Ireland!), often hear more background and context than the high level press reports. The news reports are bad, the additional stuff I've heard only make it unbelievably worse.

It's surprising how quickly this stuff moves out of the headlines.

It's surprising how quickly this stuff moves out of the headlines...for such a serious problem in our society.
