Those headlines will surely feature on Reeling in the Years 2021 @JaneJeffer Shock !!

Jeez the numbers aren't so good today are they? Would that be Easter gatherings showing how? And then that outbreak at the building site... with all the new variants and the slow vaccine rollout I'm not feeling very confident about any real freedom this summer to be honest Sad

I ventured out of my 5k for the first time today. It was great!! Sun shining, blue sky, cherry blossom in bloom. I was actually a bit nervous about it beforehand which made me realise how institutionalised I've become.

On my way home the 25 min drive took 50 mins because the traffic was so bad, which made me think lots more people must be going into work. I've always worked from home so no change for me and dh has had no talk of returning to his office yet. I think they are planning to do 2/3 days from home on a permanent basis.

JaneJeffer · 22/04/2021 23:38

They found the 14 year old and arrested the 18 year old. I don't know the story but I kind of feel sorry for them if they're just girlfriend and boyfriend.

halfpasteleven · 23/04/2021 05:37

It's hard to know but the fact that the guards and psni were so concerned for her welfare makes me think his involvement with her might have been more sinister.

eggandonion · 23/04/2021 09:35

I want it to be young love, I hope it was a big romance. But it could have been something terrible, and ended badly. Great to see the system working.
My husband is going to his office, I'm going with him to have a walk nearby. His office is in a house, nobody else will be in. I still can't believe this is reality at times.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 23/04/2021 10:06

I've been trying to post on this thread on my phone but it just won't post. Do I'm giving it a go on my phone.

I've either been banned from posting on here or I've posted similar messages 800 time.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 23/04/2021 10:06

First phone is supposed to be PC!!!

eggandonion · 23/04/2021 11:55

I can't answer my phone, I have to call people back. It posts here if I press send twice.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 23/04/2021 13:11

Not sure why that's happening- my posting issue is the opposite to yours too so probably not a weird quirk with this site.

Anyway, I waa trying to write in response to the CRI altet being discussed this:

"Whatever it's about, his face and name are known and the social media vigilantes have branded him as a peadophile. When this happens there's usually no way that mind will be changed even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

I think the Guards would be aware that this is what would happen, surely. If his involvement isn't sinister then his life is now ruined."

3timeslucky · 23/04/2021 14:15

Given how rarely they use that CRI alert I reckon they must have had good reason. If it was my daughter running away at 14 - no matter who she was with - I'd have wanted the same. Whether it was young love or not it was really bloody stupid on both their parts. But he is the adult (in the legal sense of the word). I certainly don't consider him a pedophile because of the proximity in age (even putting the possibility of statutory rape) but I consider him to have really bad judgement. I wouldn't think his life is ruined. I saw the pictures yesterday but wouldn't recognise him or her if I met them. His criminal record is likely to be a bigger issue for him.

3timeslucky · 23/04/2021 14:15

By criminal record I mean if he ends up with one on foot of this.

eggandonion · 23/04/2021 14:17

My immediate concern would be that he'd crash the car. Teenagers in cars are a worry.

Yes, you're right! I'm glad they were found quickly, safe and well. It would give you palpitations just thinking about it.
ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 23/04/2021 16:44

Ah maybe your right. He's such a unique name (for Ireland) I could see the accusations of "pedo" ollowing him around.

I find social media vigilantes frightening. Or even how someone can be so easily demonised with little or no evidence through social media.

The Garda has something about avoid speculation in comments on the situation. Which obviously happened anyway.

MarDhea · 23/04/2021 19:49

When I was in school, a 14-year-old friend had a boyfriend who was 24. It lasted a few months. The only reason any of us (as her peers) thought it was weird was that we were surprised a 24-year-old man would really find a 14-year-old girl attractive.

God, we were idiots 🤦‍♀️

M0rT · 23/04/2021 19:58

When I was 16 I had a 28yr old boyfriend for a few weeks.
Was the least pushy fella I ever went out with cause he was so worried about my age... dumped me because he felt too bad going out with a school girl.... probably the one and only time I'll ever be dumped for being too young Grin
I think there was more to it then boyfriend and girlfriend, there are teenagers posted as missing every week in that situation and they don't put that alert out.
Glad she's safe now anyway.
I went to the beach today and got in the water, literally just a dip but I'm in great form after it all day!

JaneJeffer · 23/04/2021 20:43

I remember a girl at school around 15 going out with someone in his twenties. He used to pick her up in his car at lunchtime. We were all a bit Confused about it. I think the nuns would have killed her if they found out!

eggandonion · 23/04/2021 21:59

My older daughter had a couple of friends with much older boyfriends when they were about 16. She also had a friend who passed her driving test at 17, who drove her mates to McDonald's on Friday lunchtime.
I agree, usually a teenager going missing gets much less publicity. I hope all is well.

halfpasteleven · 25/04/2021 22:00

Just noticed this thread has been v quite over the weekend!
Hope everyone had a lovely one.l out and about getting fresh air and vitaminD.
We got to dip our toes in the sea on Saturday and Sunday and I feel immensely grateful for it.
It was only 18/19 degrees but it might as well have been 28/29!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 25/04/2021 22:55

It was a lovely weekend, wasn't it? It was great to be able to sit out in the sun.
I went into town (Cork) yesterday morning, quite early. It was my first time since the beginning of December. Many shops were closed, but I enjoyed a browse through the Old English Market and bought a few nice things to eat, had a proper cup of coffee and a croissant on a bench in the park, then a stroll around and home. Quite a little break!

eggandonion · 26/04/2021 12:57

That sounds good, I haven't been in the big city since last summer. I dread seeing all the empty shops.
I hung my washing out about half an hour ago, and sat down to Google what to do with bulbs after flowering. I haven't stood up again. I'm in the sun.
Sad news from the accident in kinsale, And horrible fires.

Yes egg. It was a bit eerie, alright, seeing most shops with shutters down. There weren't too many people around either. Yes, that accident in Garretstown was absolutely awful. A freak accident. A friend of mine told me that the young lad was a friend of the son of a close friend of hers who was there too and witnessed it. They were used to camping there, apparently. I don't know what happened, I suppose they lost their bearings. The two forest fires were awful, terrible devastation. It's horrible to think that the one in Killarney may have been started intentionally. It is roasting outside. It's apparently 14 degrees but feels ten degrees warmer!
LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/04/2021 14:14

Dia duit go léir! Hope everyone is doing ok. Thank goodness the weather has picked up, it really makes a difference doesn't it!

I have absoultely nothing to report. Haven't gone anywhere or done anything etc. The highlight of my weekend was getting all the laundry baskets emptied and all the clothes/bedclothes etc dried outdoors Smile

DS school has sent a message about next years fees being due ('voluntary' contribution, school expenses and something else) he's hardly been in school at all this year and here we are paying for next year already Hmm

Voluntary subscriptions! What a laugh.
The poor lad who died was a friend of dd2 's boyfriends younger siblings. It's shocking, poor family and friends. (I bet there is one degree of separation between everyone on mumsnet in Ireland!)
I think someone is spreading slurry near us.

That poor lad, RIP.
