Oh the joys of the Mammy haircut.
I couldn't let DS out without a trim today.... he looked like something out of a Zombie movie.
Had to be very very firm to get him to allow me to trim the edges.

We queued for HarveyNorman in the sun yesterday (needed work/school tech stuff).
Interesting to see how many men had professional looking neat haircuts. Hmm

That man from Myshall? is he still going? He must be ancient!
M0rT · 12/04/2021 09:50

My brother found an underground barbers a few weeks ago, was in an industrial estate getting building supplies and spotted men walking in and out of a door in the side of a building.
Saw someone go in with two small boys warning them to behave and curiosity got the better of him.
Went in and there were 6 chairs set up and a queue of men waiting, no masks or distancing.
Told him they were booked up but he could book an appointment online and gave him the web address!
Don't think they're too worried about being caught because he is tall and broad and often mistaken for a guard.

BigBlueDog · 12/04/2021 10:13

If you enjoyed Rachael Blackmore's historic victory, you will enjoy this tg4 documentary on various women involved in horse racing in Ireland.
www.tg4.ie/en/player/home/?pid=6138774696001&series=Jump%20Girls&genre=Faisneis
It includes footage of her racing as a child.
Some bits are in Irish but quite a lot of the interviews are in English.

LadyEloise · 12/04/2021 13:40

I'm waiting for the hairdressers to open as I look a holy show. Smile
I tried to cut my hair myself. Not a good look but the split ends were dire.
I wouldn't trust dh with a scissors. For the craic he'd probably cut it too short.
I'm really annoyed with the underground hairdressers.
I thought we were all in this together.
I see quite a few with newly coloured ( professionally) hair. Envy

Iblinkedandiamold · 12/04/2021 18:32

I haven't heard toppers in ages.
I thought was national no homework day. All my afterschoolers got homework. Sad I hate homework.

Carriemac · 12/04/2021 18:40

@Phrenologist he was a horse trainer as well
Just googled him and he's still alive

It's a gift handed down for generations
Bonkers
DH is a Scottish doctor and finds this sort of thing hilarious
He had a patient once who's family played Daniel O Donnelly non stop to wake him up from a coma ...

Tbf that would probably wake me up from a coma - I'd be yelling at my family to change the music.

Did anyone watch the 'Reeling in the Years'? I forgot about it. I'm sure they'll repeat it though.

@Carriemac, I forgot -- I did know in some recess of my mind that he was Danoli's owner! My knowledge of racing is nil, but I have a feeling Danoli opened a supermarket a friend of mine worked in...

And I am knotted about the Wee Daniel records used medicinally, though I'd be interested to see the results of a proper study on whether repeated playings of 'Pretty Little Girl from Omagh' was more likely to cure or to make comatose patients whisper 'Unplug the machine, or shoot me, for the love of God...'

Phrenologist · 12/04/2021 19:08

My aunt did claim that she had revived my elderly grandmother from a 'weakness' by playing her Joe Dolan's 'Good Looking Woman'. Maybe there's something in it... Grin

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 12/04/2021 19:23

Reeling in the years yes, I enjoyed it. Christ, what a year 2010 was, especially the bank crash, the bailout, and the Troika turning up to sort us out.
It was so sad to see Keelin Shanley reporting from Haiti. What a fantastic reporter and person she was. May she rest in peace.

Ah, a 'weakness'. Is that the same as 'a turn'? Grin

I'm only 40 and I admit to being a fan of Daniel O'Donnell on Facebook. Blush I'm ashamed of myself to be honest. No good can come of it.

Have any of you seen this? It's totally Irish, woman who has to be all things to all men and something that we all identified with when we first had to grapple with new modern live streaming technology during lockdown! It gets better the longer it goes on as she starts to lose her patience altogether!

My point-to-point racing Carlow grandad was worked on many times by a bone setter from Myshall, lol. When we visited I always asked to see his crooked finger.

Totally agree about Keelin Shanley an excellent reporter, gone way to early.

MoreOfADogPerson · 13/04/2021 08:27

There's a new RTE podcast about the Arms Crisis that sounds good. I listened to the first episode yesterday and there'll be a tv documentary in a few weeks:

www.rte.ie/eile/podcasts/2021/0331/1207299-gunplot/

Phrenologist · 13/04/2021 09:49

Did anyone watch the first part of the two-part documentary on the Burren? I didn't but will get it on the Player.

I know some people on here have also been following Smother to its (fairly odd) conclusion.

LadyEloise · 13/04/2021 10:02

I had half an eye in it. Great programme. Was fascinated by the item on the cuckoo. I've never heard a cuckoo and would love to. I used to think as a child the cooing of pigeons was the cuckoo. Blush

When lockdown is over I was planning on going to Clare.

We tried to book when we had that shortish window of freedom last summer but the hotel was booked out on our dates. Sad

Phrenologist · 13/04/2021 10:10

I thought the same, @LadyEloise! Actually, the first time I remember definitely hearing a cuckoo as an adult was in Ros a Mhíl waiting for the boat over to Inis Mór, and I heard it again in west Cork during the first lockdown.

Carriemac · 13/04/2021 12:36

@mathanxiety how are you not called 'matts anxiety' with a Carlow grandad ?

JaneJeffer · 13/04/2021 12:38

I know some people on here have also been following Smother to its (fairly odd) conclusion.
I need to watch the final episode. I'm finding it so dreary.

We're being warned of a fourth wave of Covid. Fucking great.

eggandonion · 13/04/2021 12:39

There was a lady on mumsnet years ago in Wicklow who had a woodpecker nearby, I think I read recently that they are spreading?
I occasionally see a kingfisher, after our local river floods. Currently we have two very stupid swans nesting in a duck pond which is tidal. The men's shed have now constructed a raft so the nest can float, and the council has provided a fence. It is possibly the worst place they could have chosen in terms of teenagers, dogs, thick people, and geography.
I'm trying to pretend the vaccine rollout is perfect. My friend has a heart condition, dodgy hips, has to go to the dental hospital because she is on so many medications...but her cardiologist has been told that she will get astra zenica because she is 65.

JaneJeffer · 13/04/2021 12:57

Wow Deric Ó h'Artagáin has some lockdown beard on him Grin
