The pregnant daughter wasn't his (Denis) biologically.

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 12:03

Thanks @halfpasteleven. So who was her father? Was she the eldest daughter?

TheFourOhFour · 16/04/2021 12:19

@JaneJeffer

Thanks *@halfpasteleven*. So who was her father? Was she the eldest daughter?
Well, apparently the producers released this when the early episodes caused confusion, but I'm not sure it's right, is it? I understood that only Grace, the youngest, was the daughter of both Denis and Val, that Medic Daughter was Val's from a previous relationship and Peter Pan Collar Daughter was Denis's from a previous relationship?

I'm pretty sure I understood that from the party in the first episode, and the fact that Medic Daughter wasn't Denis's seemed to be underlined by what Val said to her when she was at her bedside after the baby was born -- that she'd been alone and poor having her or while pregnant with her, and that Denis's money had swayed her towards him...?

(Also, I had no idea that Carrie Crowley's character was Val's sister...?)

That's a handy family tree @TheFourOhFour. I didn't think Peter Pan wasn't his but as can be seen from this thread I am not a reliable witness Grin

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 12:29

Oh and now I realised you mean she has a different mother! I really don't think it was well written at all!

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 12:38

I like to read this but I'm not going to subscribe Grin

I knew who was who in the family except for Carrie Crowley and the bf who had an affair with Dennis. I thought that Carrie's character was a friend.
Did anyone else feel the mother of Callum and the child I thought was a girl in EP1, was very hard done by.
Blamed for a fire that wasn't her doing, being an alcoholic, alcohol can be a crutch that can then become a problem. Her children being taken from her in suspicious circumstances ( her ex dying of cancer and she being unaware ) after she had made a real effort to turn around her life so she could have contact with her beloved dc.

I know the ending but just in case anyone on here hasn't finished watching I'll not reveal it.

I didn't feel sorry for her (even though maybe I should have) because I didn't like her. I didn't like any of them. There was no warmth to anyone.

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 13:02

This reminded me of another thing I was confused about. What did Young Offenders woman mean by this?

I assumed Young Offenders Mammy just meant Dervla Kirwan had turned the three daughters against her when she discovered she was shagging Denis (maybe she had been previously close to them?), but I could be completely wrong.

And it wasn't clear to me how long ago YO Mammy had been shagging Denis anyway -- was it years, so the three girls had been children, or fairly recently? She was invited to the party...?

And I got fairly mentally handwave-y about what exactly YO Mammy's investment in the stalled development was, and what she actually said about Spaniard's Bluff? Was that her and Denis's shagpad or something?

And if I'm even right about only Grace being both Denis and Val's child together, and that Medical Daughter was Val's from before Denis, was Peter Pan Collar Denis's from before he met Val, or from a bit on the side concurrent with Val?

(Is Dervla Kirwan even called Val? I might have invented that...)

She probably did. Bit of strange wording.

I think Denis took all his women to Spaniard's Bluff. Glad to see he at least had a stash of condoms, the dirty dog. I loved that house, it looked so cosy.

It's for sale! I've had lunch in Ballyvaughan before.

TheFourOhFour · 16/04/2021 13:41

It was a really nice house. Though a bit unsuitable for an illicit shagpad, I'd have said, with the bed on the ground floor right inside the big, glass sliding doors, and a drive where any car is totally visible from the road?

(Have I thought too much about illicit coastal shagpads? Grin)

Why was Rory's first wife (Elaine?) staying there, anyway? Are we to think Denis lent it to her while he was persuading her to sign away her parental rights, or that she moved in there secretly after his death?

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 13:43

I thought he was snagging her so she'd sign away her rights to the children. He must have had some moves Grin

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 13:45

Shagging!

Oh, it's lovely! So they just stuck in the Shagpad Bed and condom-filled bedside table into what is actually the living room for dramatic effect.
JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 20:03

This is from an Irish Times interview with the writer, Kate O'Riordan. She wasn't able to write an episode of Casualty but RTÉ let her loose on a six part drama!
"And I did a Casualty," she adds, almost as an afterthought.
What - Casualty, the BBC TV drama series? "Yes. It was a total disaster," she admits. "I just couldn't get it right. "I'd been trained all along to do everything possible not to make characters say what they're feeling; to find ways to show it through the action or in a roundabout way - a facial expression, or a glance - but in Casualty there is always a moment where they just spill their guts. Everybody does. They'll be in a cubicle and they say `you did this to me and you did that' - and I just could not get it out. So in the end I just went for a storyline credit. That was bad. But, to earn a living you have to do other things - novels don't pay enough by themselves."

By the way - Spaniard's Bluff aka Denis's shag pad is up for sale!

Who did he leave Spaniard's Bluff to in his will? Someone please put me out of my misery!

youngestisapsycho · 17/06/2021 10:23

I'm sure it was left to Grace.

Bjarnum · 18/06/2021 13:50

Thanks @youngestisapsycho

LavenderAskew · 01/07/2021 09:55

Didn't spot this thread when I was watching!

The layout of Spaniard's Bluff is odd, despite the video I can't really get my head around it. I demand a floor plan!!!
