I think there will be a lot less buy in this time around, when we need it even more. Too many restrictions that are not justifiable, e.g swimming lessons that are totally socially distanced not allowed.

On top of that, Golf gate, Phil Hogan and all the other high profile people who went abroad this summer on their holidays suiting themselves.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/10/2020 16:59

I couldn't agree more Quarterback.

SionnachRua · 09/10/2020 18:33

Absolutely Quarterback. There will be far less compliance with the restrictions - I think the government know this themselves and it's partly why they are refusing to bring in anything meaningful. The current noise from the Vintners about minimum alcohol pricing is a perfect example - government won't do it, public unrest is a dangerous thing.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 09/10/2020 18:53

Totally agree with your post at 15.46 Quarterback.

TheKeatingFive · 09/10/2020 19:00

Much as I have no sympathy at all with the current government, it’s clear they are royally fucked at this stage.

Compliance will be way down. Yet hospitalisations are growing. There is no way people will abide by restrictions at Christmas. And shutting down shops at Christmas is an economic nightmare. Yet Christmas is basically a super spreading event waiting to happen.

The circuit breaker stuff makes sense in that context, but the costs are tremendous. Pascal has been beating that drum today.

Unless vaccine developments save their collective asses, they are damned whatever they do.

TheKeatingFive · 09/10/2020 19:15

I’m also starting to question how much responsibility the average Irish tax payer should be shouldering in terms of ‘not overwhelming the health service’.

Many people in this country pay a very high rate of tax and then pay for health insurance on top of that.

Our doctors are very well remunerated. It seems they our health service is very badly run. Entire industries are taking the hit for the fact that they can’t cope. At what point do they rebel?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 09/10/2020 19:26

You are raising very valid points, TheKeatingFive. The situation looks very bleak.

LadyEloise · 09/10/2020 19:43

Very good points @TheKeatingFive

SionnachRua · 10/10/2020 16:14

Isn't the problem with the HSE due to an abundance of middle management and admin staff? So I have heard before. Those staff aren't going to be out treating patients.

Our doctors might be well paid but if there aren't enough of them, there aren't enough of them. Ditto midwives, nurses, anaesthetists...You'd regularly see articles about the long hours junior doctors work. Same with intensive care beds, if we don't have enough we don't have enough. This has been a problem long before Covid hit.

Now, I do agree that what the taxpayer is being asked to do here needs to be looked at carefully and theatres/bands/restaurants are getting fucked over here. Doesn't have anything to do with doctor salaries though.

321mamma · 10/10/2020 19:13

1,012 cases today... Surely we will be moving up a level now, when is the question...

LadyEloise · 10/10/2020 19:47

Over a 1000!!!
Where are the cases ?
Who are they?
Why are they getting infected ???
Is it the elderly in care homes ?
Is it 3 rd level students ?
Is it people working in close proximity to others ?
Is it teenagers ?
Is it children ?
Is it medical staff ?
Is it teachers ?
Is it 20 or 30 somethings ?
Is it those in their 40s ?

Forcedoutoflurking · 10/10/2020 19:48

Level 3 in Dublin seems to have helped with the numbers though, have been quite stable. Don't think they should be putting Dublin up a level. Country needs to learn to live with this. Increase capacity in hospitals like they should have done a long time ago.

Iblinkedandiamold · 10/10/2020 19:50

Holy shit, case numbers are through the roof and the hospital admission are going up too. @321mamma maybe we should've moved to level 5 in the first place? Although I said when we moved to l.3 that it was just easing us into something else.

321mamma · 10/10/2020 20:00

I think they are biding their time at this stage so any type of lockdown coincides with midterm... Any teachers on here with any inside info?!

SionnachRua · 10/10/2020 20:38

Any teachers on here with any inside info?!

Trust me, teachers find out this stuff at the same time you do. Sure we got guidelines on remote learning on Thursday - which were meant to cover Sept-Dec! One month gone already!

Over 1000 cases is shocking but I'd wonder how many are asymptomatic...

Buggabooboo · 10/10/2020 20:44

In fact, teachers get the info after everyone else. When lockdown was announced in March at midday, teachers were teaching. Some schools were actually not aware what was happening until the children had already gone home with no books!

SionnachRua · 10/10/2020 20:53

Very true Buggabooboo. The first we knew of it was a flood of panicked emails flying into our inboxes! That was a hellish day, I think I've blocked a lot of it out.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 10/10/2020 20:56

Shocking numbers tonight. How are we going to turn this around?
Yes, Sionnach. In my teenagers' school, the students were getting texts from their parents and were telling the teachers who thought they were joking at first.

7Days · 10/10/2020 21:04

It's getting scary again.

People are worn out and we need to do a massive effort again.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 10/10/2020 22:23

If I was in charge, I think I'd be taking quite a pragmatic approach.
Christmas is 11 weeks away.

If they put in a firebreak over the schools midterm at end of October/early November, that might get numbers down so that they can release the pressure heading into early December and Christmas.

It would be very very difficult to ask people to be locked down over Christmas; but if numbers went back up, January could be another fire break.

I suspect, they have fingers and toes crossed to keep numbers down for the next 3 weeks, though tonights numbers are v v concerning.

321mamma · 10/10/2020 23:19

I wonder if there was any way they could even finish up for Christmas a little bit earlier so kids who want to see elderly grandparents can isolate beforehand😢

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 10/10/2020 23:31

Some families might do that, 321mamma, take their kids out and quarantine before the Christmas holidays. We live three hours away from one set of grandparents. We visited them once during the summer. It's hard.

LizzieAnt · 11/10/2020 00:10

I was planning to take the kids out of their (primary) school early at Christmas just for that reason. So they could quarantine and get a chance to hug their grandparents again.
I'm considering taking them out sooner with the way the numbers are going now.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 11/10/2020 07:45

If I had kids in primary, I'd consider it, LizzieAnt. It's harder when it's secondary.

MysweetAudrina · 11/10/2020 08:59

Seems like there was a bit of bother yesterday in Dublin between the anti mask protesters and the anti anti mask protesters. I honestly don't see us being under level 3 by Xmas if they don't put us into level 5 for a few weeks before then. I think although what TH said was unpalatable at the time he said it, he probably knew what he was talking about and that we will continue to see an exponential growth over the coming weeks. Hospital cases are rising as the older generation is starting to be affected again. My guess is that they will close the schools for an extra week at Halloween although they are saying that the opening of schools isn't the cause of the increase. My dds school text last night to say one of the students has tested positive but school will go ahead as normal tomorrow as there were no close contacts identified
