There are cases of the virus in schools in Berlin two weeks after schools opened there. I would expect the Germans to be organised and follow procedures. This is worrying for us. Overcrowded classrooms and poor ventilation are going to be a big problem here.

Lipz · 22/08/2020 19:13

Shocking numbers again today.

Shocking rise in numbers in German schools too. Only yesterday they were overly confident on their numbers having re opened schools.

Our schools haven't even opened yet. I'm dreading Wednesday, my disabled dd goes back 😭😭 Thursday the other 4 return.

Got the plans for all the schools. One being 50 pages long 😲😲 out of all our schools only 1 I feel slightly confident with, however in saying that, this particular school has students returning that have recently been away and just returned, attending house parties, etc

I trust the teachers and those in charge, I believe they want to keep themselves and others safe, however I don't trust SOME of the parents.

I'm not happy with the bus situation either. Been told by bus eireann it's first come first serve, that there are no plans to have extra buses on, even when I mentioned about mehole saying there would, the nice man in bus eireann told me, that no one told him. But he did suggest the kids leave earlier, so instead of getting their buses at 7am they will have to get them at 6am. Might as well just let them stay up and not go to bed.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/08/2020 20:04

I'm lucky we don't have the worry of school buses, Lipz. Best of luck to your kids next week, especially your DD. It's a tough one.

I agree with you. I think that teachers and schools will do their best. I wish I could feel positive about it.

Yes. High numbers again today.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/08/2020 20:35

The high numbers are worrying, our health care system isnt equipped to deal with large numbers. Look what happens every year particularly at flu season. No beds, people waiting on trolleys.
Just hoping that the numbers are high because they are testing more close contacts also hoping most of those people have mild or no symptoms.

Lipz · 22/08/2020 21:21

I'm tempted to not send dd back next week. Her health is really bad. Her immune system is very low too.

This is also my worry about the testing, even if they didn't test, people would still have the virus. What's worse is if they have no symptoms then they are going about their daily lives as normal. By testing they have a chance to slow it. But how many people are not been tested. How many are going about their daily lives. How many are walking about spreading it and thinking they're OK so feck everyone else. It only takes one person with it for my dd to get the virus, we've been told she wouldn't survive it. She can't wear a mask so I'm depending on others to wear them. The teachers and SNAs will be wearing them but none of children will. They're trying to give me more confidence about sending her, saying they are in small bubbles, they will be able to slow the spread if someone in the bubble gets it, but it may be too late, after all schools won't be testing, they'll be waiting for a child to show symptoms, sure that can take over a week or not at all.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/08/2020 21:52

Oh Lipz, that's such a difficult position to be in. Flowers

chartreuse · 22/08/2020 22:00

Gosh @Lipz you've really had a hard few months, I'm sorry, it must have been awful and now you have this worry. I think I'd be inclined to keep her at home for the first couple of weeks to see how everything is going before sending her back as she's in such a vulnerable position.

I just saw that MM and LV have asked Phil Hogan to consider his position. I hope that's only posturing to get him to make a more sincere apology. We need him in Brussels for Brexit, he's in a crucial position. I'm so annoyed over the golf affair that I emailed our FF TD, but sacking PH would be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 22/08/2020 22:22

That's tough about your dd, Lipz. Would she be upset if you kept her home for a couple of extra weeks, just to see how it goes? I think if it's all going to go to shit, it will happen fairly quickly.

chartreuse - about the Phil Hogan thing, I was a bit confused by the insistance yesterday of him complying with quarantine rules. Then I read www.rte.ie/news/politics/2020/0821/1160454-calleary-reaction/

The relevant bit (shortened) says "The spokesperson said Mr Hogan arrived in Ireland at the end of July and went to Co Kildare ... left the county on 5 August, before the local restrictions were applied, for a hospital appointment ... at the conclusion of that appointment, Mr Hogan went to Co Kilkenny for a period of convalescence and this is where he completed his period of quarantine. The statement said he travelled to the golf event in Co Galway directly from Co Kilkenny."

Kildare locked down on August 7th. They are therefore saying he hasn't been home since. I'm wondering if there is more to come out and if so MM and LV will want to be ahead of the news.

This virus thing is turning me into a paranoid conspiracy theorist!

halfpasteleven · 22/08/2020 22:25

Lipz, I would also be inclined to keep your daughter at home until you see how the return is managed....
I say this as a teacher (primary) who is terrified about going back.
A week or so won't make a massive difference to your DD from an educational point of view, and could be the best decision from a health point of view .

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/08/2020 22:26

Lipz, I don't think I could bring her to school. What class is she in?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/08/2020 22:29

Agree with others to hold off until you see how it works out.

Re Hogan; yes, watch this space.

Motivationalpastry · 22/08/2020 22:38

I'm really worried about sending mine back to school too. They all have asthma, as does DH. Their grandparent, who has a life-limiting (breathing related) illness lives with us. I don't know what to do for the best. We've been so, so careful since March and now it feels like we're being asked to play Russian Roulette with our health.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/08/2020 22:40

Yes it does, Motivationalpastry.

teaorwine · 22/08/2020 22:50

Russian roulette is exactly how I feel about the kids going back with the way the numbers are. My dw has type 1 diabetes and our 12 Yr ds has athsma and is out sick every Nov with an unrelated virus for 3 /4 weeks, so really scared of either of then getting it. And now I have no faith in this govt. after all the carryon and inconsistent decisions in the last few weeks...

chartreuse · 22/08/2020 23:09

Hmm, interesting about Hogan. MM can't sack him, that would be Ursula Van Der Leyen's job and I read somewhere that they get on well.

I would be very cautious sending a vulnerable child back to school and I'm sure schools would be understanding and send work home. It's too much of a chance to take, especially with what's happening in Berlin now with schools. DD's school is not back for a couple of weeks. We have to be extra careful because of a family member, I've told the school that we'll be keeping her at home if it feels too risky and I get the impression from the response that other families are planning to do the same.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/08/2020 23:35

My older DD had asthma as a child from 3-11 years old. She used to be in and out of school very often with it. We ended up buying a nebuliser for home use and she was on antibiotics and steroids frequently. She used to catch every cold going and it would go straight to her chest. Luckily, she grew out of it.

She is 16 now and in TY. I'm hoping her history doesn't make her more susceptible to the virus. I feel for people with children who are vulnerable. It's such a tough position to be in. Their worries are valid ones and schools need to make extra provision for them.

honeyrider · 22/08/2020 23:59

Phil Hogan flew back from Brussels for a vote back in June or July and didn't isolate, he went straight to the Dail for the vote.

Apileofballyhoo · 23/08/2020 01:09

Anyone see that Phil was at another golf do in The Netherlands?

Another big load of new cases today.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 23/08/2020 02:09

If (as Twitter seems to think) Phil Hogan was in Holland playing golf instead of in Waterford recovering from an operation, the shit will hit the fan - it'll make Dominic Cummings look like a law abiding citizen Shock.

I really feel for all of you with children going back to school. It's such a difficult decision. I think schools are never safe for very vulnerable children. They are hotbeds of germs at the best of times.

Iblinkedandiamold · 23/08/2020 09:19

I read on Twitter that 81 children under the age of 15 have ben diagnosed with covid in the last week. (15-21 of Aug) so Lipz I think you'd be right keeping her off.

LadyEloise · 23/08/2020 10:01

Oh Lipz. That is worrying. Definitely keep her off school til you see how things pan out.
iblinkedandiamold are those 81 children with Covid19 in Ireland or Northern Ireland ?

I really don't like Phil Hogan. I think he is very arrogant. To get that plum job after the mess in Irish Water.
Because of the Brexit negotiations, though I hate to say it, it might be wiser to keep him in Europe. Sad

Iblinkedandiamold · 23/08/2020 10:33

In the Republic.

LadyEloise · 23/08/2020 10:43

Thsnk you.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 23/08/2020 10:45

There isn't much being said about that (81 children...)

TheKeatingFive · 23/08/2020 11:19

To put this all in context, we have (rough approximation) about 2,000 live cases in Ireland right now, but just 21 of those actually hospitalised (and 6 in ICU).

While the numbers are alarming, clearly a large percentage of them are very mild/asymptomatic that we’d never have picked up on without the proactive testing we have now.

When case numbers started to climb quickly in March, hospital admissions followed very swiftly afterwards. What we’re dealing with now is a very different situation and that isn’t happening.

On another note, Phil is a distraction. Mehole needs to focus on getting his own party in line.
