I've been following this thread for a while but not contributing. The whole thing is a bit bonkers, isn't it?

I wouldn't mind if they said "the most important thing is schools. We are prepared to cancel everything else to keep the schools open" - that would make sense.

But they seem to be pussyfooting around the edges in a way that'll piss off everyone, but not actually achieve anything Confused

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 20/08/2020 11:30

And the end result will be that no-one will obey any of the rules because they just don't make any sense.

I heard a suggestion on the radio that if it's spread by house parties with alcohol, we should ban the sale of alcohol for a couple of weeks. The stunned silence from the presenter was really funny, as was the absolute disbelief from all the other contributors. To think that we, as a country, would be happier to do without education for our kids, sport (!!!), funerals and weddings, but couldn't manage with short-term prohibition is interesting.

Not that I'm suggesting that it would work, but i do think the entire country needs to get it's priorities straight.

Yes that’s the danger. In fact, it’s already happening. My work place are facilitating people coming in if they want on the grounds of ‘better internet in the office’. And that’s fair enough really. My office is well set up for distancing and they’ve taken every precaution to make it safe. Workplaces vary enormously.

They know where the ‘super spreading’ is happening. Food factories, direct provision centres and house parties/big private indoor gatherings.

Actually tackle those. But they’re difficult, so they won’t. Hmm

Meddling round the edges with GAA is pointless and only going to piss people off.

It’s a tough gig for sure, but Mehole is playing his hand very badly.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 20/08/2020 11:47

My son and his friends (young adults) have been pretty good through this entire thing. He lost his job, missed out on his summer in the US, missed out on four months of the college course he loved. They all stayed home until about July, then they started meeting outside (soccer, golf), then moved on to bbq's in back gardens in small groups.

But now they are giving up; they feel it's all pretty pointless because there is no end in sight and no logic to what they are expected to do. So I can see him living pretty much normally (except for the pub) from now on, and I can't criticise him for this. I think young people have done an awful lot for the old and vulnerable, and I'm not sure it's fair to expect them to do it for much longer.

My parents (late 80s), on the other hand, have decided that it's unfair for the whole country to make sacrifices for people who have had a full and happy life. They think that everyone should go back to normal until and unless the hospital figures go up, and that it's up to them to decide whether to stay completely safe at home, or take calculated risks.

eggandonion · 20/08/2020 14:04

I agree that each age group has had its own challenges, and I found it easier when the rules were strict but straightforward. But I think young adults are having a really bad time.

Lipz · 20/08/2020 19:01

136 cases and 1 death today 😒

This is shocking.

I just don't have any faith now in our government. Pushing along for full school re opening and figures like this.

eggandonion · 20/08/2020 19:35

I think the r is going down though, according to gavan Reilly. It looks like the meat factory men are passing it on to girlfriend, looking at the Male female figures, but they seem to think they can suppress the clusters.
I hope so.

eggandonion · 20/08/2020 20:26

Virgin says r is 1.2. I hope none of the politicians at the dinner last night have covid.

Popjam · 20/08/2020 20:32

The figures depend on the area though...the whole of Connaught has stayed at around 5 per 100,000 or lower even over the past 2 weeks.

Kildare was 138 per 100,000 last week. There is definitely a case for localised lockdowns.

I'm in Connaught and have no isse with the schools going back (local primary), they are taking reasonable precautions.

Lipz · 20/08/2020 20:35

He said the r number is at or above 1.2

They can only account for 68 cases, the rest they don't know where they got it.

54 are men / 81 are women
78% are under 45 years of age
57 are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case
11 cases have been identified as community transmission
51 in Dublin, 24 in Kildare, 12 in Kilkenny, 11 in Tipperary, 7 in Cork, 6 in Limerick, 6 in Wexford, 5 in Meath and the remaining 14 cases are in Carlow, Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Offaly, Roscommon, Waterford and Wicklow.
"The core message from NPHET this week is to limit your social networks," said Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn.

eggandonion · 20/08/2020 20:52

It seems laois and offaly are now under control, but not kildare.

halfpasteleven · 20/08/2020 21:16

I would love to know why the secondary school buses are going to be running at half capacity to allow for social distancing but the primary school buses are not?
Children from 3rd class up have to social distance too...
I think there's not enough thought or detail put into what the primary schools require to return safely.

teaorwine · 20/08/2020 22:27

Really annoyed about Dara Calleary tonight, cannot believe he attended that dinner. It really is one law for most of us and another for the rest. He should resign. FF should be ashamed of themselves.

What a joke. It’s one misstep after another with these jokers. They’ve only been in power five minutes.

Inanutshelldaze · 20/08/2020 22:38

Ridiculous 80 attending function... Govt made it quite clear that weddings were exempt from the 6 gathering indoors & could have a max of 50 including staff but these politicians happily attend a gathering of 80 the day after the restrictions announced..
They will completely lose the public... They need to lead & be showing example

TheKeatingFive · 20/08/2020 22:44

On a slightly different note, it’s worth pointing out that while the case numbers are surging, hospital admissions are holding very steady (have been between 10/20 since end of June, 16 as of today).

Obviously there’s plenty of scope for these to go up, but the fact that they haven’t yet, weeks after cases started to rise, suggests that it might be a milder strain that’s doing most of the infecting. I know the average age of those infected has dropped by a lot, but I don’t think that alone accounts for it.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 20/08/2020 23:00

Michael isn't having much luck with his Ministers for Agriculture, is he?

It seems it was a "Oireachtas Golf Society" event - I wonder how many TDs were there (and if any were from Kildare, Laois or Offaly).

I want to see a guest list - and I want the whole fecking lot to step down. They can't expect your bog-standard 20 year old to stay at home while they travel all over the country to attend golf dinners Angry

eggandonion · 20/08/2020 23:22

Phil Hogan and Sean O'Rourke were there. And Jerry Buttimer who is a local senator where I live, who was advising us on social media how to stay safe in the storm.
A golf dinner is the new substantial meal.

user1496146479 · 20/08/2020 23:30

Anyone else get word from their primary school, that the kids can't bring school bags home ? So they have to carry lunch box & water bottle in their hands, while trying to climb on/off school bus?

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 21/08/2020 00:22

Looks like most of those who have admitted to being there are from Cork/Galway/Westmeath. It seems from The Examiner that they know who was there but are waiting for some of them to admit it.

user1496146479 - I presume they want them to take as little as possible home. So much for saving the planet with reusable sandwich boxes and drink bottles - everyone's going to be back to plastic ziploc bags and single use water from Lidl!

user1496146479 · 21/08/2020 02:36

@OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots
I get the logic in terms of reducing what goes on & out. ....
But kids especially small ones won't be able to carry it separately... typical lunch for full day, sandwich, yoghurt, fruit, breadsticks etc, plus water bottle.... Maybe it's just my kids, but yoghurt especially would have be in a hard lunchbox, or it's not making it to school in one piece! Blush
Nor would any of the pots, I'd usually use for fruit etc making it home! Grin
Plus as I said then not being able to physically carry it on to the bus etc.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 21/08/2020 02:50

Oh, I get what you are saying, and I know it's a PITA, but there is no easy answer here. If books, lunchboxes etc carry the virus they are going to stop items going into/out of school. How they are going to do homework I don't know.

I think a large clear plastic bag is the answer. Bung everything in there. In fact, I think I'd revert to the aldi/lidl 24 bottles of water for €2.50 and sod the enviroment [sigh]

TheKeatingFive · 21/08/2020 08:07

And now the numpty has resigned. Grin

LadyEloise · 21/08/2020 09:46

I never thought I'd say this but
I want the old government back !!!
Barry Cowen must be having a wry smile.

Micheál Martin should have announced no holiday break for the moment in the Dáil as we deal with this pandemic emergency.
Be statesmanlike.
It's as if we are living during a war except our enemy isn't a foreign power but a blo*dy virus.

TheKeatingFive · 21/08/2020 09:50

FF just can’t help themselves it seems.

Mehole is way out of his depth. Donnelly is useless.
