Shielding ends next Friday and I’m not sure if I should book a table at the restaurant for a family dinner and my bring my elderly mother who has been shielding since March due to her diabetes so she is very vulnerable.

She lives alone so this has been very tough for her and I’d love to bring her out for dinner once shielding ends but I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing or not

Smurf123 · 22/07/2020 13:58

My mum is shielding due to chemo treatment.. She has been told she is to continue shielding for the foreseeable.. From next Friday she is allowed to go for a socially distance walk.. It could be just because of the treatment she is getting though but her updated letter definitely said she was to continue shielding unfortunately.

Oh no that really is awful! I hadn’t realised it was different for every shielding person or some anyway! I’ll have to ask my mum if she got a letter or not, maybe she’ll need to continue shielding as well.

I hope all goes with your mum’s treatment!

Smurf123 · 22/07/2020 17:15

Thanks @mummabear1967 as I say I'm not sure if it specific to the treatment mum is having or whether it maybe depends on who your Dr who is!
We are sticking to outdoor activities atm. As much as we would love dinner out I'm not sure I would enjoy it worrying so for now we are sticking to taking away and eating at home.

Yes tbh that is probably the wisest thing to do! My mum loves going out for dinner, tea/coffee etc with us but I’m just not sure even after 31 July if it’s still too risky or not but I’d say a takeout would maybe be the best option for us too.

But would love to maybe get out for a meal (hopefully) before DD goes back to school in September

I see the Executive is going to talk again today about whether to make masks compulsory in shops. Seems like they may just “strongly recommend” them. Very few people seem to wear masks and I can’t see this changing unless they make them compulsory.

I don’t know if I agree with it or not. I’m kind of for it and against it.

I’m for it because the amount of people there are in shops and not social distancing scares me, I know face masks aren’t a substitute for social distancing, but I’m sure they would help limit the spread to some extent so they may be beneficial in that way.

On the other hand, I’m against it because how on Earth is this realistically going to be enforced on people? It’s all very well them saying that people will be refused entry into a shop if they refuse to wear a mask but what if they take it off when they get inside, it might be easier to enforce in smaller shops like your local newsagents but what about larger shops like Tesco and Asda? Are there going to be staff policing every aisle to ensure people have their masks on?

And, if this is up to employees to enforce, they could very well be subject to a lot of abuse, both verbal and physical I would imagine!

halcyondays · 23/07/2020 11:53

I think the idea is that if it’s made compulsory then most people will wear them, same as with the lockdown about 75% of people followed it. There will be some people who have a genuine reason not to wear them and some that was just refuse but the majority will wear them.

Those that refuse to wear them should be utterly ashamed.

I’m not going to wear one unless it is compulsory or if not I’d only wear one if I felt it was absolutely necessary.

But if it does become compulsory, the refusers would need to grow up. Don’t see the big deal about wearing a mask unless you have a medical reason

halcyondays · 23/07/2020 15:00

No I don’t either, nobody particularly likes wearing masks but unless there’s a genuine issue, it shouldn’t be that bad to wear one for an hour going round the shops.

Apparently about 70% of people on public transport, where it is compulsory, are wearing them. What’s stupid is that school transport is exempt.

Yep don’t understand that either

R number is estimated to be between 0.7 - 1.1 in NI 😱

eggandonion · 23/07/2020 21:46

I'm wearing mine a lot, we are all being good here. My daughter is a frontline worker, and any support we can give the fight against covid is worth doing in my book.
She'll be wearing a mask all day tomorrow.

honeyrider · 24/07/2020 02:15

I've seen a big increase in people wearing masks in shops, I feel more comfortable wearing them now.

I've got a selection of fabric masks in various patterns and colours and some disposable ones, I've noticed masks are becoming a conversation starter amongst females admiring each others masks.

Iblinkedandiamold · 24/07/2020 08:09

I wear my mask, then again I've been wearing some sort of face covering from the start 90% of the time. Sometimes I forgot to bring it with me which caused anxiety when I went into the shop.
I have noticed a slight increase in mask wearers.
My new masks came yesterday, they have Irish words on them. Grin

mummabear1967 · 24/07/2020 11:22

I haven’t been in a shop in a few weeks now as I’m well stocked up with groceries so haven’t needed to go recently but will need to within the next few weeks, so are more people definitely starting to wear them?

I think if people see more people wearing them, then other people will start to follow suit

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 24/07/2020 13:28

Yes I think more are mummabear and exactly, as you've said, the more people that wear them, the more social pressure to wear them.

We went to a local hardware shop, which had clear signs at the door, asking you not to enter without a mask.
Fair enough.

JaneJeffer · 24/07/2020 15:29

A nice badly worded headline to scare your children with!

eggandonion · 24/07/2020 15:33

That's horrible!
I can't imagine having to get kids (or work from homers) back into routine after so long. Dh has been in his office once for two minutes, dd1 gets up at 8.55 and logs on, then goes and has her tea. about ten she has a break to clean her teeth.

Yes definitely, I’d be more comfortable wearing one if loads of others were too as I wouldn’t feel like the odd one out!

It is going to be so so weird but I suppose it’s for the best

Blogdog · 24/07/2020 16:35

There are definitely more people wearing masks in shops. I was in Dundrum shopping centre 2-3 weeks ago and at that time I figured around 1 in 10 people were mask wearers. Just back from there today and at least half of the shoppers had masks on. All ages, including children.

I was also in the West last week and I’d have said 30-40% of people were wearing them indoors. It’s becoming the norm.

Lipz · 24/07/2020 18:55

I see Norma has said all schools will open August and it'll be full capicity and all teachers and children are to attend.

Lipz · 24/07/2020 19:03

Special measures for high risk students and teachers. She was just on Virgin this evening saying this.

mummabear1967 · 24/07/2020 20:57

What’s happening with FE colleges in Northern Ireland? Is it remote classes again?

wannabebetter · 25/07/2020 12:01

Is anyone else thinking things are getting more & more ridiculous re rules in different jurisdictions? Anyone travelling to ROI from GB must quarantine...but, if they fly into Belfast can just drive down! The inland waterways are full of hire boats full of GB nationals who are picking up boats in NI (Enniskillen) then immediately setting off for The Shannon(you can get all the way to Limerick) it's crazy....
