What did Leo say????

Just remembered someone mentioned using house party, it got a bit of a bashing recently, something to do with trying to access bank accounts, but this link might be useful to update some privacy settings www.which.co.uk/news/2020/04/how-to-use-houseparty-and-what-you-need-to-know-about-security/

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/04/2020 17:33

I knew they were unlikely to sit Junior Cert, I didn’t mention it to DS because I wanted him to stay engaged with school work. All the uncertainty around the Leaving and college entry must be dreadful for the kids caught up in it. Not to mention that all teenagers were looking forward to good opportunities as adults with a strong economy and low unemployment and suddenly it’s looking like they will be entering the job market during an economic depression.

eggandonion · 10/04/2020 18:04

Get any kids to stay in education for as long as possible to get through the downturn. It's bloody horrible.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/04/2020 18:19

Unfortunately I have an non-engaging child as far as education goes. He won’t be going to university, I was hoping that he’d get a good apprenticeship but I think there’ll be a lot more competition for the good ones now.

LightACandleHoney · 10/04/2020 18:35

Once again, Leo, Simon & Tony spoke excellently. They were gentle and reassuring, yet also very firm and clear on what was required. I thought Leo struck the perfect balance. He made it clear that while the guards have powers if necessary, they don’t want to be using them. I also thought his comment on not suppressing the virus by becoming a nation of curtain twitchers was great - the tone has always been (esp from him and Simon) is that we get through this by sticking together and supporting one another, rather than becoming more divided. It says a lot about the Irish mentality and cultural identity. Yes - there are plenty eejits who are thinking the rules don’t apply to them, but they are in the minority. This is hard on everyone, but I think there has been less complaining and mithering in Ireland than in the UK. I think there’s also been a lot less of the “it’s not TECHNICALLY illegal so crack on” chat that I’ve heard and seen in the U

LightACandleHoney · 10/04/2020 18:39

I really hope now that the numpties in Stormont don’t just blindly follow London if that is to the detriment of the rest on this island. Leo was right when he said that the UK is in a much worse position than Ireland, and even within the UK, NI has the best figures out of the four nations. I hope an all island response can bring Ireland as a whole, out of this stronger

NewAccountForCorona · 10/04/2020 18:58

It's going to be a right mess if they reopen shops, pubs and cafes in the North before 5th May, isn't it? They'l surely have to close the border if that happens, or at least close the main cross-border routes somehow.

Coronavirus might just succeed in doing what Brexit hasn't quite managed yet.

eggandonion · 10/04/2020 19:09

I think the shock of Boris being so sick might knock some sense into the UK government. Black American, apprentice scheme is a great way forward, my neighbour had a challenging teen who is now an electrician. A plc might help if only to get through the next 18 months.
Which is a very long time for a teenager.

Inniu · 10/04/2020 19:20

There was a poll this week showing that Leo is the most popular politician in Northern Ireland!

Realistically you can’t close the border. It is the most porous border in the world. We just have to hope that people in NI can see which policies are working better.

Dk20 · 10/04/2020 19:41

Just went to town to do my weekly shop and there are so many people out walking.

Small town so I recognised lots of people:
Saw a grandmother, granddaughter and aunt out walking together - they dont live together.
There was a guy and his sister in law who live 15mins drive apart.
A full family with a young child who is very ill.
Two people I went to school with who do not live together.

Have people already had enough and decided they will start ignoring the stay home and only exercise with your child within 2km of your house? I am shocked and angry.

I wonder if they thought the 2weeks apart was bearable but wont do anymore.

eggandonion · 10/04/2020 20:26

I think a lot of people really believed it would be over by Easter, it's very hard for close families. My family is widely scattered so I'm used to not seeing them, but my sisters in law and their kids are constantly visiting my mother in law, who isn't great at looking at them through the window.
It must be very confusing for some elderly people who are a bit forgetful.
I haven't seen anyone misbehaving recently, but the longer this goes on the tougher it is.

Dk20 · 10/04/2020 20:47

It's also so confusing for the kids who are too young to fully understand they cant be near other people Sad
Prior to this my mother looked after my dc every day while I was at work, so they are used to seeing her (and my dad) for 9 hours a day. We cut all visits with the stay home message two weeks ago.
The kids are also missing their cousins who live a few minutes away and they usually see a few times a week.
I think that why I'm so mad today seeing others ignoring the rules

KanyesVest · 10/04/2020 21:27

Anyone notice covid good Friday has replaced the old fashioned holy Thursday at the offie? Grin I had a notion for pizza for dinner and a hankering for a beer to go with it. I drove past 4 supermarkets (in a loop, none very far away and I was dropping things to my cocooning mum, so I was out legitimately anyway!) with queues insanely long and then waited 20 mins to get to the door of our local O'Briens. I worked in an off license in college and holy Thursday was always our busiest day of the year...

eggandonion · 10/04/2020 21:56

Yes the smallies are having a tough time too, it's difficult for anyone to understand.
We have a small memorial locally for a teenager who died in a road accident 23 years ago. Her mum always has plants at it, but is currently cocooned. Her sister asked on facebook if anyone would be able to look after it for her - lots of responses. I suppose we have to trust in the goodness of the majority.

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2020 22:13

Anyone watching Brendan Gleeson & son? Gorgeous music.

Iblinkedandiamold · 10/04/2020 23:41

What do you think will happen on May 5th? Restrictions remain or we start slowly coming out of it? I am hoping we start to come out but I'd say they might only lift the 2k ban on May 5th. If we are lucky.
I want to see my family again. Facetime is not the same.

Zantedeschia · 11/04/2020 00:24

I think it depends how the next few weeks go. If people are travelling spreading this weekend, there could be even more restrictions.

If there isn't a big jump in cases...I don't think too much can be lifted Sad It's gone from 350 on Paddy's Day to 8,089 today with a lockdown.

We'll get though it. Stay strong. Most people are recovering...even the elderly and vulnerable.

Dk20 · 11/04/2020 07:16

They're saying that they hope by the end of this month the turnaround time of tests will be a day or two, and then they could lift restrictions.
@eggandonion it is really good to the the amount of people that are volunteering to do the right thing and help vulnerable people.
@Iblinkedandiamold it's so hard, facetime is no substitute Sad

Dk20 · 11/04/2020 07:21

Our new neighbours were out on their deck drinking all day yesterday with visitors coming up to drink with them. No social distancing observed at all.
We got up with the kids at 6 this morning and they're still out there. Luckily our houses are detached.
I just dont know how people can have such disregard for the virus, the people who are getting sick from it and the nurses and doctors that are going through hell right now Sad

Iblinkedandiamold · 11/04/2020 07:30

@dk20 that's so frustrating. They could have the virus and be Asymptomatic and thus passing it on.
People to stop thinking of themselves and start thinking of everyone else. I'd say there are people thinking, sure I don't have it so it's okay to mix and it's really not.

beanaseireann · 11/04/2020 08:30

@Dk20
That's terribly irresponsible and selfish of your neighbours and their visitors.
I'd be livid.
What age group are they ? Do they have children ?
They were drinking all day and still there at 6 am !!!
Were they noisy ?

Jesus wept.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 11/04/2020 08:38

Selfish people are always amongst us.

Beforel now, you could ignore them, or deal with them and then walk away rolling your eyes.

The nature of the lockdown is that you can clearly see them for what they are. Mé-féiners.

LadyEloise · 11/04/2020 09:04

What I'd like to know is how we are doing as a country with our response to Coronavirus.
Are our stats good or bad ( obviously any death is bad ) ?
We locked down early in comparison to other countries. Did that make any difference ?
My fear is when the current lockdown ends will we get a second wave of the virus?

Iblinkedandiamold · 11/04/2020 09:10

They changed the numbers yesterday something about including results back from Germany. The stats they gave didnt match the live count.
I think we're doing okay though.
I see a jump in the number of cases in Longford. The Police there had to break up loads of parties so I wonder if that is why there is a jump. People not doing as they are told.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 11/04/2020 10:37

There's good comparative information available here from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus resource centre.

Our case fatality rate is 3.5% at the moment which is not bad compared to 12% in the UK and Italy. But not great compared to Singapore at 0.3%.

*Caveat: the case fatality rate probably varies between countries dependent on who they test, and how the cause of death is recorded.
So, its quite likely that these are not not accurate figures
