BorrestGump
Are the police/ gardai ( not sure if you are North or South of the border ) doing anything about the visitors coming to your area ?

Inniu · 10/04/2020 10:01

I think the messaging will change on masks.
There was no point in telling the general public to wear them when there was a shortage and the best use of them was in healthcare settings but if they can be made available again I think we will be encouraged to wear them.

beanaseireann · 10/04/2020 10:21

Masks, hand sanitiser and gloves are very hard to get in my area.
I got masks in early March but am using them sparingly. I got the second last box of gloves from the pharmacy on Monday.

Iblinkedandiamold · 10/04/2020 10:27

I'm using my gloves sparingly for the same reason. I dont go anywhere anyway so I dont use them all up. I'm going a bit crazy. I finally got my friends to download the house party app last night, it was so good to see them and talk to them.

Inniu · 10/04/2020 10:52

I have loads of disposal gloves but never use them. My supermarket provides them for shopping so I use theirs.
I have some masks I use for shopping but I am going to make some cloth ones.

beanaseireann · 10/04/2020 13:04

Can someone please explain if the BCG vaccine, which is supposed to help in preventing people getting the virus, how come people who have the vaccine still get the virus ?

The queue at my local big supermarket was soooo long this morning. I heard the manager say it it's not always like this during the Covid19 emergency, he thought it was because of the Bank Holiday. I thought it would be better today rather than tomorrow. I got it wrong

NewAccountForCorona · 10/04/2020 13:10

I think yesterday was just as bad beanaseireann, everyone seems to be doing Christmas shopping this weekend Hmm. ds went twice yesterday, gave up and came home both times. Luckily we can manage til Monday from the freezer (and he got flour last week so I'll be baking).

I don't think the BCG thing is proven. It could be that people with BCGs have some immunity, it could just be that populations who have the BCG may have generally better healthcare and be healthier as a whole. It's confusing, because in the UK most older people will have had it whereas younger people may not, but it's the older people who are (in general) dying from it.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 10/04/2020 13:50

Luke O'Neill spoke about the BCG connection on newstalk recently www.newstalk.com/podcasts/highlights-from-the-pat-kenny-show/science-behind-bcg-vaccine.

eggandonion · 10/04/2020 13:53

Portugal was giving the bcg when Spain wasn't, the death rates from Covid seem to be reflecting that - the bcg (which I never had, nor did two of my kids) seems to have some protective quality, strengthening lungs maybe? Luke O'Neill seems to think its an important variable, and that production of the vaccine is being ramped up.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 10/04/2020 14:23

I just read that story Jane Grin Grin. What a git!

Myshitisreal · 10/04/2020 14:24

Someone asked about links and graphs

NI have a daily report comes out at lunchtime here www.publichealth.hscni.net/publications/covid-19-surveillance-reports

There's an Ireland map here
www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/ireland/

I was out a short walk today and the queues outside shops are mental. There's a wee local bakery (fits literally 1 person at a time) and there was a ten strong queue outside. I chatted to my neighbour yesterday from a distance as our kerbside recycling rules have changed (we were sharing our the stuff to be able to get rid of it all) and it was so weird. She's the first person I've had a conversation with since probably 13th march (apart from my husband). I really feel for those living alone right now and abiding by the rules ♥

Sorry to hear of people bringing their holidays to town. Effing disgusting..

I wonder are we due a peak for mother's day?? When will people actually learn, like what will it take??? So glad I'm not on Facebook right now

MayFayner · 10/04/2020 14:35

I just saw the fake Garda story too 😂

God I’d love to have seen his face when he realised who he’d stopped!

tazzy73 · 10/04/2020 15:14

I got stopped last night on the M3 on the way home from work (health).
Guards were very professional in my opinion, had all the cars pulled to one side and were asking each driver where they were coming from and going to.
Hopefully there will be more of these checkpoints. Might make people think twice before venturing out.
Stay safe people!

chartreuse · 10/04/2020 15:30

Absolutely no one on Dun Laoghaire pier, I have never seen it so empty, as is the 40 foot which would usually be heaving as it's like a summers day out there.

I hope everyone is getting some sunshine today, they think good vitamin D levels give some protection from Covid.

CottonEaster · 10/04/2020 15:30

people are mostly sticking to the rules, the Guards are on the case, the media is all over it, everything is closed anyway and hardly anyone owns a second home in the first place

That's a funny comment to make (where I live there is the highest percentage of unoccupied/holiday homes according to the last census) but in the West I have not seen guards stopping anyone but have seen people unloading their luggage from their cars and going into holiday apartments. Locals renting to these people seem to think it's not their responsibility to help protect the community. Disappointing when the vast majority of the locals are taking a major hit to their business.

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2020 15:49

I hope they like their holiday homes because the weather in the west has turned horrible so they'll be stuck inside!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/04/2020 15:55

One of my FB friends was saying that Wexford is heaving despite the road blocks on the N11.

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2020 16:11

Leo on tv!

Lipz · 10/04/2020 16:21

3 more weeks on lock down. No school for the forseeable /till it's safe. Leaving cert moved till August.

Yikes

NewAccountForCorona · 10/04/2020 16:38

Bloody hell. 5th may is longer than i thought, I was thinking another 2 weeks.

Leo doesn't seem to care at all about the economy, is only interested in saving lives. The complete opposite of the UK.

I suppose were used to borrowing shed loads of money as a country!

Dk20 · 10/04/2020 16:48

I knew it would be extended but still feel really disheartened. I just think when may comes around it will be extended again. I dont see any way that restrictions could be loosened without the virus starting to run rampant Sad

beanaseireann · 10/04/2020 16:57

I agree Dk20 Sad

Inniu · 10/04/2020 17:00

Pretty difficult for Leaving Cert students but not much choice.

NewAccountForCorona · 10/04/2020 17:08

I'm gutted. I don't mind the original restrictions, but my mum only lives 10 miles away and I really want to drive over, sit the other side of the garden and have a cuppa Sad

I haven't seen my parents for over a month.
