The press briefing is at eight according to Twitter. Dh reckons they are looking for extra figures so they can lock us in longer.

NewAccountForCorona · 29/04/2020 19:44

If they are showing it live is it another address from Leo?

Dk20 · 29/04/2020 19:44

Thanks @eggandonion
Time will tell, but I would agree with your dh that a 'late' briefing is probably not a good thing

Iblinkedandiamold · 29/04/2020 20:49

@inniu, I hear ya. Today is an eating day for me. I've just had a boiled egg, two slices of brown soda bread, apple crumble and ice cream and I still want more. I will not give in, I will not.

Iblinkedandiamold · 29/04/2020 20:51

Also I'm watching Normal People, it's bringing back all the dread of the Leaving Cert.

NewAccountForCorona · 29/04/2020 20:52

Well that was pointless. I thought the late update might be something earth-shatteringly interesting (for example, I could take the dog to the beach).

36 more deaths Sad. I think we are over the worst but it'll be a long, slow curve downwards.

eggandonion · 29/04/2020 21:17

I gave up reading Normal People, I didn't care. DD1 is trying to illegally watch it on BBC, she was queen of leaving cert angst.

LadyEloise · 29/04/2020 21:25

It's still not great numbers wise.

Looking at photos of some of the people who died because of Covid19 - RTE ran them just before The Angelus and News at 6 had me in tears. I hate this virus. So much sadness for so many people.

I wish the people flouting the rules would spare a thought for those who have lost their loved ones.

Wrong board, sorry! Blush

Barbararara · 29/04/2020 22:08

My masks are not going well! The sewing machine is possessed but I knew that anyway, so I decided to hand sew instead. I’ve tried two “best shape ever” masks but neither are great. They’re fine if you don’t move your face at all but if you talk at all your nose slips out!
I’m going to use one of the simpler designs I rejected to start with!

I was thinking about how Leo is a doctor and obviously not an economist, and whatever the downsides of that, you have to be grateful when you see what a disaster it is to have a “business man” in charge.

I saw this picture the other day and my first thought was that Dougal would be a massive improvement because at least he has a heart

Iblinkedandiamold · 29/04/2020 22:53

I'm offended by that picture, Dougal would do a better job, or he'd press the red button and blow us all up. 😂😂
Getting up early tomorrow to get my chair in Lidl. I'm actually looking forward to it while being terrified at the same time. Really hoping no-one will be up at 8am.

7Days · 30/04/2020 02:23

Why are the numbers of new cases still so bad? Is there anywhere I can see a bit of analysis?

eggandonion · 30/04/2020 08:55

I think the testing is revealing the extent of cases in residential care, and is going to extend into more community testing, so reveals the true number.

Iblinkedandiamold · 30/04/2020 09:52

My egg chair was gone at 8.05 this morning. Same thing happens to me every year. Sad

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/04/2020 10:40

Barbararara My friend has been making very successfully. She says the small is about right for a child, the +quarter inch is for an adult and the +half inch would be for a large adult.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/04/2020 10:43

RTE news are saying that only 280 cars have been sold in April, which is down 96%. It's not surprising that it's way down, but it is surprising that any are sold at all. How did they manage that when all the dealerships are closed?

NewAccountForCorona · 30/04/2020 10:59

I agree, eggandonion - we are simply doing a lot more proactive testing than a lot of other countries, especially the UK. They have no idea how many cases they have; by testing every nursing home resident we are slowly getting a handle on it which will be a benefit in the long run, though it makes the figures look terrible now.

iblinked, all the garden stuff I wanted in Aldi was gone as well. I'm not sure that they are getting in everything they are advertising. The cars must have been pre-ordered, maybe fleet cars? I don't know, but I can't imagine the car sales business is going to pick up for a while.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 30/04/2020 11:34

A neighbour owns a car dealership. He said he told three cars online this month. He wasn't expecting to sell any.

Inniu · 30/04/2020 12:12

I suppose some people who have to go to work but don’t want to get on buses, dart, Luas might buy cars.

Iblinkedandiamold · 30/04/2020 18:12

Bloody hell numbers are not good today. Just when I thought we might be seeing a reduction in deaths. Still we are doing well really but I'm ready to get back to normality now, like everyone else. I cant stop getting weepy. Feeling like this is dangerous for my credit card. It's when i start trying to make myself feel better by buying shit.

NewAccountForCorona · 30/04/2020 18:29

I'm not so worried about the increase in cases; they are ramping up the numbers and we are well up in tests per million population, with three times the number of tests than in the UK. They are testing all the care homes; there are bound to be many positives, the fact that most of them don't need hospitalisation is a good thing.

As for the deaths; it was always going to go down more slowly than it went up, and while every death is a tragedy I do think the policy here is working and we will get out of this.

3luckystars · 30/04/2020 19:29

At this point the figures are higher than when we first locked down. It's going to be a long road.

Inniu · 30/04/2020 20:42

Good chart from today’s briefing.

Cases among the general public are way down. Healthcare workers staying level, community settings up.

eggandonion · 30/04/2020 21:07

Seamus Coffey plans to have April cumulative figures from RIP.ie tomorrow. I can't believe April is over.
