I've been reading back newspaper reports from Dec and Jan about an unusual high number of people being admitted to hospital for flu, I think it was 2000 or something which sort gets me wondering are we all right when we say that Covid 19 has been here since Dec.

Thinking the same - DS was admitted to hospital at Christmas with bronchiolitis and the hospital was unusually rammed with flu cases. The doctor in A&E told me they were dealing with a serious flu strain that wasn’t covered in the flu jab

There are still house parties going on which isnt helping, not all of them are reported on the news either. Some people, not just young people either, seem to treating it like a holiday still. I want to knock all their stupid little heads together.
The government do have a difficult few months ahead of them. There is no guarantee schools will open in Sept and even if they do there is no guarantee that childcare will.
Still in a few years time it'll be like none of this had every happened and we'll all be back to out self centered ways. No more looking out of neighbours or balcony bingo.

The message from Italy was only to hospitalise if absolutely necessary - Lombardy hospitalised everyone and had worse outcomes that veneto that only hospitalised fewer. This informs the Irish and UK approach. This Irish media love to compare Ireland to UK ,but the UK, despite political failures in taking action,
Is doing similar to comparable counties such as Spain and France
Your point about letterkenny and and Cavan numbers being higher because of northern Ireland I don't really understand- their deaths per million in NI are lower than the Republic of Ireland ?
Ireland's population density , geographical isolation , age of population, ethnicity etc are advantages compared to the UK also.

i think they need to start with garden centres, minus the cafes. They have a lot of outside areas and usually fairly good space compared to supermarkets. I'd have thought they'd be as good for spacing people as an Avoca?
DD1 has been trained to work in nursing homes now, she is HSE staff - but there is a union dispute. So she doesn't know when she will be working in nursing homes. She isn't a nurse, most of the training she has been given is use of hoists. I think the underpaid, underqualified, under resoured sector needs better care in future.

eggandonion · 21/04/2020 11:01

Are NI still only reporting hospital deaths, not including residential settings? Some of my northern inlaws seem to be seeing more of each other than they should, heading out to wave at each other.

NewAccountForCorona · 21/04/2020 12:04

I think deaths per million in NI will turn out to be at least as high as Ireland - they only started counting deaths outside hospital a week ago, and they haven't backdated those figures. Considering the lower population and the fact it's not an international transport hub, it should be a lot lower.

I heard that half of Cavan went to Cheltenham - I think it was a joke but I'm not sure.

Iblinkedandiamold · 21/04/2020 13:09

@chartreuse I know what you mean about food. On my walk this morning I started raving apple crumple so popped into the shop and bough cooking apples and ice cream. Cant wait to eat it after dinner. I've had a rare productive morning, walk, apple crumple made, lawn cut, clothes on the line. Trust me that is a lot for me. 😂

All mass gatherings banned in the state until August at least. Some clarification at last on concerts, although I'd say it'll be a while until I attend a concert again.

NewAccountForCorona · 21/04/2020 20:01

I wonder will that include Electric Picnic (usually first weekend in September). That could be a lovely virus-fest!

I can't see myself going to large gatherings for a while; I saw someone on another thread asking if people thought their cruise would go ahead in August and was amazed that anyone, anywhere, would ever consider going on a cruise again.

AngelaScandal · 21/04/2020 20:22

I have WEstlife tickets. Can we all start a Novena that I will see Westlife.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2020 20:23

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 21/04/2020 20:24

I have Book of Mormon tickets Bosco, I don't think a novena will work Grin

Ps, love your name so much

NewAccountForCorona · 21/04/2020 20:41

Westlife concerts must surely be exempt Shock. They can't cancel those, the mammies of Ireland would revolt.

NewAccountForCorona · 21/04/2020 20:42

oops I've just seen Westlife Cork is/was supposed to be in August

AngelaScandal · 21/04/2020 20:46

And I yours @MotherForkinShirtBalls

In fact most of us have hilarious names. We’re FIERCE witty so we are

eggandonion · 21/04/2020 20:48

My dd1 got Westlife tickets for her birthday at the end of August, she isn't even a mammy! Electric Picnic would be difficult as I assume we'd need to wash our hands in September.
This year is horrible.

Inniu · 21/04/2020 20:50

Mass gatherings are more than 5,000 so it won’t include shows like Book of Mormon. I have tickets for that in December and hoping Heathers might go ahead in October too.

Iblinkedandiamold · 21/04/2020 20:51

@Bosco I'll light a candle for you.
@MotherForkinShirtBalls I keep seeing that blond one in the good place when I see your name. Makes me giggle every time.
I had three concerts 20, 27 and 29th of June.
How on earth are they going to reschedule/refund all these concerts.

AngelaScandal · 21/04/2020 21:36

Much obliged @Iblinked

eggandonion · 21/04/2020 21:56

Leo is going to set out a step by step plan, he's telling Miriam! Before the fifth of May. But it's still having to be considered.
Leo is in a purple tie.

NewAccountForCorona · 21/04/2020 22:12

I'm becoming very fond of Leo. I find myself wanting to pat him on the head and give him hug.

I'm turning into my mother Blush

eggandonion · 21/04/2020 22:29

Poor Leo, Miriam wanted dates and freedom. And to know the deal with the rotating Micheal thing. Leo was not saying.
Then the economics bit, that's increasingly dire. Paschal is sad.
How will we get out of this?

AngelaScandal · 21/04/2020 23:23

Picturing Michéal spinning merrily on one foot there with the rotating Taoiseach thing

Andi2020 · 21/04/2020 23:35

How do you get refund for Belsonic concert in Befast in June booked with ticketmaster

NewAccountForCorona · 22/04/2020 00:34

We're used to being broke, we'll survive. We'll just lower our expectations for the next three years.

Then Mary Lou will come charging in on her white horse, get 250 seats in the Dail and we'll all be rich, obviously.

I think Ticketmaster will refund money as soon as concerts are definitely cancelled.
